Some Tuesday Recruiting Notes

With little news that has not already been disposed of on the site (scroll below) and our writers basking in the glow of all the women that are now approaching them following the Sporting News nod, we are left with three basketball recruiting notes to fill us with gladness on a Monday night:

(1): The talk of the last few days has centered around comments made to Kentucky Ink’s Chris Fischer by Terrence Boyd, a 2009 recruit from San Diego. Boyd, who has been highly ranked at various points during the recruiting process, told Fischer that on his next visit to Kentucky, he could very well commit to the Cats. Boyd is a Small Forward that is very skilled and would be a welcome addition to any team. Over the last couple of days, I have spoken with some folks around the program, all of whom were taken a little aback by Boyd’s comments. Boyd is at this point a long shot to qualify to play next year. His grades are less than stellar and most assume he will not be eligible absent a heroic Senior year in the classroom. Some have even suggested that UK hasnt even issued a full offer due to these grade issue. Regardless, we are scheduled to talk to Boyd on the show, potentially on Wednesday, and hopefully will know some more. But if one were to listen to Boyd himself, they would think that there is a possibility for a quick UK commitment in the coming weeks. Whether he will actually wear Blue and White remains a very open question.

(2): Also burning up the Kentucky Ink website was today’s story by Victoria Sun that suggests that UK may have decided to pull out of the Deniz Kilicli race. The basis for this decision was his desire to attend the West Virginia Midnight Madness instead of the UK version, thus potentially putting West Virginia in the driver’s seat for his services. On Friday, Kilicli’s coach suggested to me that Kentucky was still involved, but reports this weekend suggested that Deniz’s decision had the effect of making UK pull out. It also raises questions as to whether the decision to move Madness back ended up being a positive one, at least for the 2009 class. With both Kilicli and Wall bowing out, the guys that were supposed to come due to the early date have decided not to make the trip. Daniel Orton is still coming, but it is likely that he would have come anyway, thus making the decision to move Madness up likely to have the added effect of allowing him to attend the Kansas Madness as well. While it is surely the case that some 2010 recruits will be on campus that may not have been able to attend otherwise, at least for 2009, the decision hasnt paid huge dividends.

(3): And in the news of names of yesteryear, Shawn Kemp Jr., has committed to Alabama. Both Tubby Smith and Billy Gillispie recruited Kemp at some point and there was a time that Clyde seemed to have real interest in the former Cat commitment’s son. However Alabama ended up getting the commitment, another solid get for the “Man Who Can Recruit, but not Coach”, Mark Gottfried. As with all Shawn Kemp references, my thoughts immediately go to one of the legendary UK stories that involves Kemp, an attorney and uriniation in a potted plant in a law office. One day when little is going on the site, I will recount it in detail, but suffice to say, I have never looked at the elder Shawn Kemp the same way again. Good luck to his son at Alabama and we shall see him in the years to come.

More throughout the day, including the Intern’s SEC Slant, more Blogger contestants and a look at the best thing South Carolina has to offer…..

It doesn’t seem like Wall or Kilicli were coming here anyway. I don’t think moving Madness was a bad idea, I think it would be fine if Orton was the entire focal point of the night. Orton is the top priority, of course I would take Wall but we may happy to have Keandre Liggoway for 3 to 4 years instead of Wall for one.

Kilichi must be going to choose Huggy-Bear’s promise of lots of booze, tons of fat chicks and NIT invitations!

  3. cat_fan_in_kingsport Says:

Booze? Fat chicks? God, I miss Harlan County.

I do believe it’s Fisher, without the ‘c’.

    Pity the potted plant.

How can people determine with much confidence that Boyd won’t qualify? How much have they really looked at his grades? I’m sure they aren’t stellar but hell the kid has all this year to get his grades up. Why couldn’t he be able to do that? Is he just plain old stupid or something. Anyway I love that picture of Boyd. He looks like he has attitude. Him and Pilgrim together with Orton and Patterson and Hood plus the speedy ultra athletic GJ and things are looking pretty cool.

  8. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

Oh and you can’t forget Keandre Liggoway. I can see both wearing huge earrings. We will have an afro and probably three guys who wear monstrous earrrings. R WE BECOMING MEMPHIS? Seriously though we are recruiting kids that are barely qualifying and kids that look like they would rather fight you than look at you. If it means wins I am all for it. Hell we can still bash Memphis all we want.

  9. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

Just throw in the Hoods, Eutons and Byrds of the world and I guess that makes us nowhere near Memphis, sorry.

#3, Kport eh?? Grew up there, know it well. Proud to be a Cat fan in orange country. Kemp Jr going to lots of talent U and underachieve just like the rest of the Tide past teams.

  11. GregW Says:

#7. He just needs 8 gore classes. Thats a full year of school and some summer school. It isnt as dire as it once was. He has been to 4 high schools (for basketball reasons) which could make it more difficult to get qualified. He could commit to UK and then prep if he chose, or he could qualify all together. He could be qualified alot easier then this blog lets on. Not saying it will be easy but it isnt impossible. Prep school would be more likely, and then the Cats take him in 2010 which would actually work well for the Cats. On top of that it sure doesnt hurt sealing up Orton once and for all.

    2. I remember being in Cincinnati(Blue Ash) on business and seeing this Lexus SUV driving down the road, swerving and it’s left front tire was flat. It was just before 9am so the streets were full and cars were honking. I followed the Lexus as it pulled into a BP station and parked in a handicap spot when there were other spots to park. Huggins hopped out of the drivers seat while on his cell phone yelling at someone at the top of his lungs. He yelled, “Bring your car and stay with mine till you fix my tire”. I wish I had a video camera back then.

The guy is a mess but he’s a good recruiter, I hope he has straightened some things out.

    13. That’s funny

  15. cat_fan_in_kingsport Says:

    10. Yep, to my surprise, the Vol fans down here in TN don’t hate Kentucky like I thought they did. We pretty much have two things in common: We hate Florida and have horrific cell phone signals.

  16. wick Says:

Jody’s saying that the Boyd deal may be a bit premature.

What’s more disturbing is it sounds like his coaches (same as Orton’s coaches) are down on UK in a fishy sort of way.

  17. nybrasky Says:

The comments Demling links to definitely show that dumb armchair coaches who talk negatively about recruits do have an effect on the process.

Fans should just let coaches do their jobs and support their decisions and players they bring in.

  18. maxim99 Says:

17 - agree. And blogs should also respect recruits, their decisions and nationality. Not all people have the same “type” of “sense of humor”.

  19. SlickRick48 Says:

Why are UK fans so crazy??

  20. Mr Schwump Says:

How do you know it was UK “fans” making those comments?

  21. maxim99 Says:

    20 - like your style…deny, deny, deny.

But lets be honest, you have read this board and all other UK boards. We don’t know how to control ourselves.

  22. mcmermaid Says:

So, who is coming to Midnite Madness now?

  23. Mr Schwump Says:

Hardly denial 99. Anybody can come here claiming to be whatever, no one knows for sure. Really a very simple question asked, guess that’s what through you off. Any player who chooses a school based on what they DO or DO NOT read on a message board is bizarre.

  24. GummyBear Says:

Deniz already told Huggy Bear he would attend WVU MM on the original date. We moved ours up so he could come to ours also. But Huggy moved his also so he wouldn’t come to our MM. Moving the date was not a bad idea, we just got snaked by Huggy Bear.
