Marmaduke’s Monday News and Views

So after watching approximately 7,000 hours straight of Olympics coverage and knowing that the individual women’s gymnastics finals were on, I took a break from my patriotism to watch the Bob Saget Roast on Comedy Central. Once again, I was not disappointed. In what has become a yearly tradition, Comedy Central gets together a group of people who you dont see for the rest of the year (hello Jeffrey Ross and Greg Giraldo!) and they roast a secondary celebrity, in this case Bob Saget. Once again, it was a series of great bits, with the top shelf this time being Jeff Ross, Gilbert Gottfried and (of all people) Cloris Leachman. But the star of the show to me, as he almost always is any time I see him, was Norm McDonald. Getting up and giving an intentionally lame set of jokes to honor the awful jokes that Saget made while host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos”, he had me rolling throughout his ten minute classic Norm set. And before he went on, he made fun of another comic by saying that rather than listen to him, he would read something really funny….like the comic “Marmaduke.” Which got me thinking…..just how bad are the comics that are in the newspapers? Just off the top of my head, I can think of awful strips like Hagar the Horrible, The Wizard of Id and the hideous “Family Circus.” While there are exceptions (I will take a “Far Side” and a “Frank and Earnest” any day), can you think of other terrible comic strips. None will top Marmaduke (worst comic ever), but give it a shot….

To the news…….

(1): The most important news of the weekend was the first UK football scrimmage. As we wrote about earlier in the weekend, the early verdict was not good for the offense. The offensive line was way off its game and gave the new quarterback virtually no protection. Hartline played ok, but not great….certainly however not bad enough to panic. But the WR position showed itself to be the weakness of the team as Dicky Lyons and Matt Roark played well, while no one else looked competent enough to take the field. Good news was found on defense, specifically from Myron Pryor and Corey Peters, who are setting themselves up to have a big year on the Defensive Line. I have read some comments that early scrimmages are of no importance….and sometimes that is correct. But for an offense with so many new pieces and an important game coming up in two weeks, the performance was disheartening. The OL will likely improve, but the worries at receiver could plague this team all season long.

(2): Late tonight, Morgan Newton’s father told Jeff Drummond of TCP that his announcement will be postponed until Thursday night. The prep quarterback, who is considered one of the five best “athletic” quarterbacks in America is choosing between a host of schools, but most believe that UK, Clemson and Florida are at the top. His mother told a South Carolina newspaper that she favored Clemson, his father favored another school (presumably Kentucky) and Morgan maybe another (presumably Florida). This is reminiscent of the Patrick Patterson affair when it was presumed that mom liked Kentucky, dad Duke and son, Florida. But there are four days to make the call and Morgan will be on our show at 6:30 tonight (streaming live here) to tell us what is what. Make sure and tune in.

(3): changed the star ratings for the Class of 2010 and the news is mixed for the UK guys. Dominique Ferguson remains a five star but KC Ross-Miller was given three stars and Dakotah Euton two stars, meaning that he likely will not make the Top 200 list. This is consistent with most of the views we have been hearing all summer where nearly every expert agrees that Ferguson is a special player, views are mixed on Miller and fairly negative at this point on Euton. All three kids have plenty of time to move up and down the rankings and still have two years of high school basketball left….but this is the time where kids begin to showcase their true talent and it will be interesting to see what the next few months bring.

(4): We have said this before, but it bears repeating….this is going to be a year where Razor Ramon Harris turns some heads. Every time I speak with someone around the program and ask about player advancement, I am told one name as the biggest improvement, Ramon Harris. He is without a doubt the best perimeter defender on the team (which is why he will get big minutes all year) and has become a good passer of the basketball. His problem has always been his offense, but I continue to be told that he is getting better every day and has gained confidence at taking the ball to the basket. His shooting is still mixed, but if Harris can become a threat to drive the basketball, outside shots for Meeks, Porter, Miller and others can open up. Harris is the key in my view between a good team and one that can be a bit better than that.

(5): Liu Xiang is out of the Olympics, as his Achilles injury kept him from running in the 110 hurdles first round. The most anticipated event in the host country, with the most known and praised athlete in China is now an afterthough. Xiang had more pressure on him than any athlete in the Olympics and it is sad to see him unable to go.

Huge week around here. The Intern returns to his regular posting…..Mosley starts his SEC preview….Bobby Perry begins his writings on here about all things UK basketball and we introduce, one day at a time, the Kentucky Sports Radio girls. It should be fun, so stick around……..

When I watched him play last year I was stunned that he was offered a scholly. I knew that everybody was hollaring about this kid when Tubby was here and as soon as CBC arrived and Florida and Duke came to visit and bam everybody was up in arms that we have got to offer him and I guess Billy wins over the mob by offering. At the Marshal Co hoopfest I was stunned how terrible he was and stunned also at his teammate Jackson who many were slobbering over, athletic but average. Dime a dozen here in West Ky W Tn area. Euton looks as though he is another Adam Williams, ranked high on hype with not much game to back it up. I hope he reads this and gets pissed off and works extremely hard to prove me wrong… Odds are against him though. I still have that sick feeling when I watched him.

Tank McNamara… Cathy… Rex Morgan M.D., I’ll take family circus and wizard of id over them anyday.

But def. give me Boondocks or Far Side.

  7. CalifCatFan

Allah be praised!!! Mosley is coming back. Hot damn!!!!

  8. CatFan4444

matt, you are 6,999 hours ahead of me on watching the olympics!!!!!!

  9. GoCats

Nothing will ever compare to the Far Side, ever.
I expect Euton to be comparable to Hayes and Daniels. He is not going to ever be a 20 and 10 guy but he will do everything he can to help the team for 4 years and we will all love him.

  10. Ryan

I just read that DeAndre Liggins is already 20 years old and will turn 21 during his freshman season. That means if he stays 4 years, he will be 25 years old.

Is that a negative or positive? I’m curious about others opinions.

  11. Roggensak

Alicia Sacramone was robbed last night!!! Bela Karolyi is dead on about the judging.

  12. Ryan

    11. I actually thought you meant Alicia was robbed by a criminal and that Bela had actually past away the first time I read your message.

  13. Ryan

It wasn’t all bad in this game, though, as Liggins’ talent was clearly on display in the 38 minutes he played. Showing excellent ball-handling skills with either hand, and terrific speed in the open floor, Liggins creates offense extremely well for both himself and his teammates, as evidenced by his 9 assists tonight. He is extremely creative with his spin moves and such, and is able to go both ways on his drives, making him very difficult to stay in front of when he is reading the defense and not forcing the issue.

Liggins is more than just an intriguing offensive prospect, he also brings plenty of versatility to the floor in many other parts of the game. He’s an excellent rebounder, a capable defender, as well as a terrific passer. He was about as unique a player as we saw this weekend, and will be a very interesting draft prospect to follow once he lands at Kentucky, somewhat similar to Ronnie Brewer.

11 She was mugged and kicked to the curb.

So was Nastia Luiken. Her floor routine was almost flawless. The judges must have wanted anyone but an American to win.

Best two comics ever: Calvin and Hobbs, and The Far Side.

  15. ConcreteCat

China is whooping some *ss in the Olympics. They just about have 2x as many “Golds” as the USA. Anybody think China is cheating some how? Can the USA make it look more respectable?

  16. al

Anything that features a Great Dane is awesome.

  17. nybrasky

10, minor point but if he turns 21 freshman year then he’ll turn 24 senior year if he stays all 4.

  18. the ghost of Bill Hicks

    No love for Dilbert? WTF!?

  19. bigblueben

    15. I don’t think China is cheating, but with a communist country you get a million people (probably closer to right than exaggerated) on the countries payroll just to train from the Olympics. I read somewhere they have 30,000 people on the government payroll for rowing alone. 30,000 people earning a paycheck, of which 29,880 will not make the squad. That makes it easier to “dominate” some of these lesser know events. It is all part of this “Project 1991?” or something. They are trying to sweep some of the lesser known events to win the medal count. Very systematic.

I have watched Euton several times. Unless the kid figures out how to run without doing it flat footed, he won’t be able to get on the floor at UK. His spot up shooting is really good for his size, but he won’t be able to guard anyone. Elliott County stopped him cold in the region last year by putting 6’1″ Ethan Faulkner on him. Euton couldn’t do anything but shoot 30 footers.

    14. Any sport with a judge is barely a sport. I don’t know if you have watched any boxing, but it makes gymnastics look very impartial. The judging has been criminal. I watched a dude beat a guy up in down the ring, and he lost by 2 points a couple days ago. Only because 3 of the 5 judges have to count a clean shot to be awarded a point. I have seen numerous occasions where two guys have no defense and just beat each other senseless. Final score 8-6? Any sport with judges, needs to be tossed from the Olympics.

  22. ConcreteCat

    4. You think Cat fans would have gotten the man 15,000 plus #1 votes by now.

  23. CCBLue

#20 Rose Hill beat Elliott County which was Rose Hill’s only top 20 win. Elliott County won zero top 20 games the last two seasons. Before you bash a UK recruit you need to overlook how much your program is overhyped. Not a single legit win in all of last season.

  24. Yesterdays

Can Ramon Harris dunk yet? Just wondering.

  25. brominator

Pearls Before Swine is great. As for terrible, how about Nancy?

  26. The 5 Star Dribbler

    24) My money says he has dunked numerous times in Flurry’s grill.

  27. GummyBear

Best: Opus, Dilbert, Fox Trot. Calvin and Hobbs and Far Side also get love.
Worst: Family Circus, Family Circus, Family Circus. There is no equal.

  28. bigblueben

    22. I don’t think you can vote more than once, well you can but it won’t count. I tried to vote for Rich twice at #1 and afterwords it had him with the same number of #1 votes.

  29. Phili5

Best ever IMO: Calvin and Hobbes
    Worst: Sally Worth

  30. gossie21

Calvin and Hobbes, and Far Side are the best.

Family Circus is actually hilarious if you put some of the Far-Side captions underneath instead.

  31. ukcatfan88

I’m glad Matt caught what Norm was doing. I knew he was intentionally lame but couldn’t get the link to AFV.

Far Side was greatest comic ever, and I’m showing my age here, but Bloom County was the $%^& when I was in college. Opus is a weak offering compared to it, even with the same characters. I have a teenager, and Zits is dead on. Bizarro is the new Far Side. Get Fuzzy is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.

  32. GummyBear

I was including the Bloom County years with my Opus declaration (but not Outland, btw). Speedbump is a good Far Side immatation also.

  33. HanOfTheBluegrass

    19) Yeah, China’s gymnastics program, for instance, is basically a lifelong mandatory (it is an honor, though) training camp. As compared to the Americans, who have their own coaches, etc, before and after joining the team.

China is cheating, though, what with the age of the female gymnasts. In general, though, it’s just all out devotion to taking gold.

    31) Yeah, I caught it immediately. The way Norm repeats a bad punchline to drill it home makes it pretty obvious. Saget and some of the others got it, including some in the audience, but otherwise, a lot of people just thought he was doing badly. As evidenced by the attempt by one of the other comics to knock his set with the blueberry comment. Which Norm responded to excellently, I think.
