Well with the world debating whether Michael Phelps is the best athlete of all time (he is not) and others of us blown away by Usain Bolt (I prefer Walter Dix), we also should focus on football season, which is now 14 days away. Today was a closed scrimmage for the Boys in Blue, and well at least for the offense, it wasnt pretty. An individual who was there and is a pretty good provider of football info, gave me this report:
— According to the individual, the offense was “Bill Curry bad” at various points. He said that Hartline struggled, but wasnt terrible but that the wide receiver position is a true weakness. “As far as I can see, we have Dicky and no one else is ready to go.” The offensive line was apparently also a problem as he said, “they dropped protection on 3 of every four plays.” He said that Derrick Locke did not play, and the running backs looked fine but that the lack of viable protection or a passing game made it difficult.
— The defense played well however, especially the defensive line. “The star of the game in my view was Corey Peters. He is going to have a huge year,” he said. The DL gets a great push on the offensive line and the defense as a whole is solid. This also matches what the coaches said afterwards as they praised the defense, while openly questioning the offense.
— Lones Seiber made five field goals, but missed a short one. One was over 50 yards.
— The person also pointed out Danny Trevathan as a player to watch. The coaches told Matt May of TCP after the game that he will find the field this year and has been an amazing contributor early.
I cant do justice to just how down this individual was about the offense. My hope is that this is just the case of some early struggles and that all will be fine. He wasnt down on Hartline and Brooks said afterwards that Hartline’s arm needed rest. But the problems of the offensive line and receivers are troubling. Here is hoping that time will heal all wounds….

Making a bowl would = success this season.

I know our weakness is offense and are strength is defense this year.
but don’t let this be to much of a worry right now.
It is typical and expected for defensive to be ahead of a offensive at this time of the year. If you follow college football hardcore you would know that year in year out at this time of the year, Top college football programs always report that their defense is ahead of their offense at this time of the year.
It is a good thing when your defensive is ahead of your offense, and in our case it is really good considering our defense is suppose to be our strength.
I would have been more concerned if our offense put up huge numbers on our defense today. Especially since Defense is our strength.
our offense needs work and they will get their but you can’t take what happen today as an indicator of our offense. UL’s defense is no where close to our defense. We are that much better

Hopefully the defense was just THAT good and the offense struggled because of that. I think the running game will be fine in the early season so the young receivers can catch up. Hopefully Boyd can get healthy soon.

A good defense is the best offense!!!

IMO, we have the best defense ever at UK. Not saying we are better than the top teams defenses in the SEC but we are not far behind.
Our D line could be (not saying it is just has the potential) to be one of the best in the country. I would say top 15 DL for sure if not top 10

Trying to keep us on subject?

Have no fear Coach will have them ready. That’s why they call them scrimmages.

How about Randall Cobb? I heard a couple INT’s were thrown. Was he one of them?? Furthermore, this year’s Cats are simply inexperienced and just happen to be playing in the toughest conference in America!!!!! Brace yourselves folks because 4-8 or 5-7 are VERY possible numbers for this year’s team UNLESS Hartline turns into Peyton Manning!!!!!!!

Hartline is a sophomore so he will have to be special for the veterans to rally round him. Growing pains for the offense is the forecast.

8)have a little faith. We are on the way up!

Honestly, it’s hard for me to be as pessimistic as some of you guys after the past couple of years. Even after the losses at the skill positions on offense, I still think we are better than 4-8 and probably even 5-7. I’m starting to view football as I do basketball…with a winning attitude and the belief that we can have a good year every year. It’s not that farfetched.

Glad to know you prefer Dix, Matt. That line alone was worth signing on this morning and answers a lot of questions for many of us.

The defense had a lot to do with the offense’s performance. Best defense since ‘77 with Still, Kovach, Blanton, Siganos, Jaffe, Winkel, etc.

Tired, unproven QB, an injured (DNP) Boyd, Cobb playing Slash instaed of adding depth to the WR corp and 2 of the 3 starting backs missing againt a D that only lost Woodyard. Who didn’t see this coming? If the O had been able to put up points yesterday, we’d have even bigger problems than we already have.
You guys are way to quick to hit the panic button.

Let’s see a full cast of characters before we damn this team to a losing season.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:52 am
#14 makes an excellent point, I would have been more worried if the offense played well against this defense. The offense will come around but this defense should be in midseason form already.

Seiber missed a short FG? Musta thought he was kicking vs Tn.

UK lost so much on offense from last season. 6-6 would be a good year after losing so much.
