Today was a great afternoon of sports for me as I watched hour upon hour of sports that most people I know dont like. I began the day watching the Nascar race live from Michigan, as Dale Jr broke through his winless streak and won a fuel milage race at the track just outside of Detroit. Then it was off to Euro 2008, where we had one of the great finishes in international soccer history. With 20 minutes remaining in the Czech Republic-Turkey game, the Czechs were up 2-0 and almost scored a third. Then in the last fifteen minutes, the Turks scored three goals, all on a goalkeeper that is one of the best in the world. I danced as if I too was a Turk. But the highlight of the day was of course the US Open, where Tiger played badly and still found his way to the 18 hole playoff through a rattled in putt, after a great approach to 18. The story for the pundits was Tiger, but the story for me was Rocco….45 years old….middle aged paunch….pants jacked up a little too high….and just happy to be there. I have loved Rocco since seeing him at the World Series of Poker recently and was pulling hard for him. He has never been here before and never will be again…and is sure to get trounced today. But you gotta give it up for him for what he did thus far and give him his time in the spotlight today, because tomorrow will be Tiger’s day yet again.

To the news….

(1): It was a TREMENDOUSLY slow news weekend (outside of Bobby Perry’s round at Valhalla on Saturday), and the one good tidbit isnt really a tidbit at all. Rumor is coming (mostly from the UK side of things) that Deandre Liggins may get qualified after early indications suggested otherwise. Matt May reported at TCP that the UK folks believe he is on the path and some internet yackers have suggested a similar rumor. We do know he took the ACT again this weekend which suggests to me that no matter what anyone says, it isnt ASSURED he is qualified or he wouldnt have bothered taking the test. As of a few months ago, he was going to need quite a score this time, but I have been told he took some classes over and now the ACT score he needs is lower. The ACT results should be here in a couple of weeks and then we will know one way or the other. But at least now the vibes are much better than just a couple of weeks before.

(2): A streak has been broken this weekend as the Kentucky High School boys finally beat the Indiana boys in an All Star game in Louisville. As per tradition, both teams played twice this weekend, and after eight straight losses, the Kentucky boys won the game in Louisville. Kentucky lost by one point in Indianapolis and won by 15 in Louisville, showcasing that they had the better team for the first time in ages. UK walk-on Landon Slone struggled, but Darius Miller had a nice couple of games for the UK team. The real story however was Sheldon Mack from Bryan Station, who put together quite a performance on Friday night. Mack is going to be a great player for Butler and is an example of the kind of guy that gets missed by scouting….not a protypical size or talent, but a guy who just gets it done on the court. You will hear his name in coming years.

(3): From the “guys playing well in the summer” category that we all know and love, we are hearing some good things about improvement from Perry Stevenson on his outside jumper. IF you watched games last year, you certainly saw that Perry could step out and hit the jumper, but I am told that he spends countless hours working on his 15-17 foot shot and is hoping to play an inside-outside game with Patterson a lot this year, a la Chuck Hayes and Eric Daniels. Perry is one of the keys to the season this year in my opinion (along with Galloway or Liggins, whoever ends up being the starting PG) and such development would be great.

One last thing…..we are about to pick the Kentucky Sports Radio girls for promotions at UK games this year again….if you know of someone who is interested, have them email us at kentuckysportsradio@yahoo.com. And if you own a business and are interested in sponsoring the group, email me at matt.jones@kentuckysportsradio.com.

More later today, including the next media rating and a “what might have been” from a few weeks ago…..

Hi, I’m The Truth and I’m an internet yacker.

  2. kyleabell Says:

It is Shelvin Mack, sorry went to high school with him for three years. At least i can do is help him get his name spelled right.

  3. GoCats2010 Says:

Lakers are gonna get BLOWN out in Boston

  4. HillbillySlim Says:

I hope Liggins makes the grade because we sure need him.

  5. sf10275 Says:

I don’t believe Stevenson will have much luck trying to put weight on, but as a shot blocker and rebounder, with a dependable jump shot he can be major threat.

  6. Straightbent Says:

Didn’t Rocco file suit against Valhalla back in 96 due to falling out of a chair and hurting his back? I hope he gets crushed tomorrow by Tiger.

  7. Garrett12 Says:

Rocco needs to pull down the shades if he plans to bluff anyone. I’m not impressed with his poker skills.

  8. UKFAN26 Says:

anyone kno any of Miller’s stats for both games? Points, assists, rebounds?

  9. Garrett12 Says:

The Celtics-Dancers on SI.com gave me a semi-chub!! Go Celts!!

  10. kyleabell Says:

    UKFAN26, Miller stats today.
“Miller, the 6-7 forward from Mason County who is headed to the University of Kentucky, made just 2 of 8 shots but hit 9 of 11 free throws. He also added nine rebounds, four assists, three steals with only one turnover.”(Indy Star)

On Friday Miller’s stats were: 11 pts, 0 Assists, 5 Turnovers, and not sure about rebounds.

  11. BlueInsider1 Says:

Mack will be great in the Horizon Confernce. Now Jacob Jenkins who put up big numbers at the Elite Camp and against the KY senior team will project better than Mack this time next year. There was a lot of talk about him tonight at the Gardens. Kentucky may even sweep next year with Hood and Jenkins in the backcourt.

  12. Garrett12 Says:

Can Perry pour in 20 on Flurry now? That might be the reason for his interest in transfering with the member.

  13. bluegrasshoopsreport Says:

It’s about time we got a W against the hoosiers. Should’ve won Friday night if it weren’t for the 29 turnovers. Hopson and Miller combined for 11 TO’s in that 83-82 loss.

  14. BravoBigBlue Says:

I do remember the incident, but I don’t know if he sued. Valhalla is owned by the PGA, not by me, you, or Jerry Abramson. I wouldn’t take it personally if he did. Go Rocco.

  15. BravoBigBlue Says:

    ^^^ For #6.

  16. Bho Says:

Rocco’s peace sign belt buckle was priceless

  17. Yesterdays Says:

How did Landon Slone struggle? Did you go to the games? He played like 9-10 minutes at most yesterday. He picked some dude clean and went in for a layup.

  18. ukfiberguy Says:

I see that Rocco has a Pokerstars.COM hat on. I thought only .NET apparrel was allowed during the WSOP. At least it was that way when I was there in 2006. You been playing on there much Matt?

  19. greginky Says:

Liggins should have taken the SAT on June 7th, I am not sure if he did or not, the results from that test date will become available on June 26th, the results of June 14ths ACT will be available 2 1/2 weeks after the test date which would put those scores due first week of July, good luck DA we need you badly

  20. ZW Says:

Hayes and Daniels? I prefer the Bowie-Turpin inside-outside combo.

  21. ransmith Says:

Sheldon Mack from Bryan Station is a fine player, one that I wish was coming to UK, but unfortunately he got away and will be playing at Butler.

Him as a back-up to Meeks, what a super strong rotation that would be at SG! Well it is what it is.

No question in my mind, we will be hearing good things about Mack in the coming years!

  22. bluegrasshoopsreport Says:

    21. Mack may very well end up being a solid collegiate player, but you can’t blame BCG for passing up on him. He is undersized for the SG position at the major D-1 level and adding him to the 2 guard rotation behind Meeks wouldn’t automatically make it “super-solid”, especially not as a true freshman. Some of the other guys being considered are much much more ready than Mack to make immediate contribution at that position (ie- Sallie, Galloway, Liggins)
