[Moderated by Matt Jones]

Hunter McClintock will be joining me on the Matt Jones Show tonight at 8 pm. That is the good news. The better news is that you will be able to (finally) listen LIVE tonight on www.939theticket.com. We will have a link later tonight to listen to the interview.
Until then, a few more clips of Hunter, sent by his high school coach to me this morning:
Some passing heroics:

I’m telling you this is the next Travis Ford–SIGN HIM lol
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Seems like he doesn’t need much room throw one up–Travis Ford with a Jeff Sheppard curl anyone?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Jody demling just said on 93.9 he thinks McClintock is way overrated. Also said he thinks Christian Watford? Is a near lock for UK.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
the kid definitely has a lot of energy
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I love Jody, but he has never seen the kid play
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Can you have the streaming transcript run on the bottom of the screen during the Pistons game?
GO PISTONS!!!!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I think the phrase overrated is used too often. How can he be overrated when no one is heard of him until a week ago? He is the latest thing being talked about in recruiting for the last week and people are very curios but I am not sure he is overrated.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
The kid seems pretty solid and would be a great late pick up. As good as his foot work seems he can surley play some lockdown D. Any clips of that or does he cherry pick and wait for the outlet??
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Matt, I believe you’re right because he said fans were getting all fired up over videos. He said he watched and wasn’t impressed. What is your opinion on watford?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
#7…overrate is overrated
#1, so he’s going to be a huge ass?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
How many outlet passes can a guard have… he’s like a QB in the first clips. He does have energy but he has no hops it looks like from the drives, he’ll have to become craftier in the paint at the next level or he’ll never finish on lay ups.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
While you can’t take much from some clips, its easy to see a few things. This kid isn’t fast but he’s very quick. He’s fundamentally sound. Almost a throw back player and that may be why defenders have a hard time figuring him out. Even those knocking the “style” of his shot need to look closely. He’s like a robot. It’s the same form no matter if its off the dribble or off a pass. He understands angles better than anyone UK has had in a while. No knock on UK players, he simply has a unique ability. People questioned if he can pass, he can pass. He doesn’t appear to be able to jump. In high school it doesn’t appear that he needs to. A quick release can take you a long way in high school. That is where I think he’s going to have to prove himself in college. In high school he can take what the D gives him. In college, he’ll have to shoot over taller more talented players and its hard to say if he can be a driving threat since he doesn’t jump. He also looks like he needs to visit a weight room and fast.. In the end, he has new college distance range, and with the new distance, true shooters will be at a premium.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
If he does come to Kentucky, there will be a lot of babies born named Hunter the next few years.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I want the kid I dont care if he turns out to be a lemon …. at least we dont take the chance of saying “man that kid wanted to come here now look at him,” and if one thing is certain, he def. has the ball skills to get the ball up court.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm
it appears that he doesn’t do all the cross overs and behind the back dribbles just to do them, he has a quick step after the initial dribble enabling him to get to the hoop…he is not the quickest quy, buy he knows how to get his defender off balance and takes advantage of it…he shoots pretty well but doesn’t have very good hops, but Cameron Mills and Patrick Sparks didn’t have hops either. It could be worth the risk, in the long run the worst he could turn out to be is a player like Michael Porter, a solid backup.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
when i read he beat matt bonner’s three point record at a tournament–i decided i liked him!
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Hahahaa I love the fact that YouTube has made so many people on here expert recruiters!
“He understands angles better than anyone UK has had in a while.”
I completely agree after watching an entire 3:30 highlight reel. Awesome!
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm
That is fantastic news MATT!!! I have really missed your show since I moved home a month ago from Louisville. I also really miss the FREAKS show. I loved to call in and argue with him for saying that Louisville is amongst the top programs in the country and that UCLA is the best program of all time. GREAT NEWS MAN!!!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
14 Your “hypocrisy knows no bounds”.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
HOW IN THE WORLD COULD MCCLINTOCK BE OVERRATED? Scout only has him as a one star player. I guess Jody thinks he deserves no stars.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I think BCG is going for a white out in the next couple of years.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
The only trouble short white kids have is having to rely on their teammates to create open shots for them, but that is not the case for Hunter McClintock.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm
So according to the experts that we have chiming in here we should sign McClintock immediately, but Zollo, Avery, Euton et al are chances we don’t have to take. Again I say, the “hypocrisy knows no bounds”. (Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday in Tombstone).
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:23 pm
23 - so you have memorized who has said negative things about Zollo, Avery, Euton and compared that with the people who have said positive things about McClintock?
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm
24 That and every line from the movie Tombstone.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm
The thing I like about Hunter is that he always attacks the basket. He doesn’t slow his momentum, doesn’t dribble down the sidelines, and only uses the crossover to get the defense off ballance. In other words, it’s not flash, it’s a tool to keep moving foward. Man, UK could have used a guy like this the last couple of years. I mean if you’re going to dribble, at least put the defense at a disadvantage, don’t stop foward momentum, and attack the basket. Hunter really understands this.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm
17) And you know how much of an expert I am without even having the benefit of Utube!! One for you.. I can’t top that…
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm
23) I don’t see where anyone claims to be an expert, they are just giving their opinions…kind of thought that was the point of a comments section.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm
26) What we can’t tell is how often he gets in trouble, forces a bad pass or commits turnovers. Does anyone have his assist/turnover ratio?
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I hope we get this get, but hopefully he will have the common
decency to get a haircut once he arrives on campus.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:41 pm
20. That’s why he thinks he’s overrated. He’s seen how much everyone is making over the kid and said he wasn’t impressed. Didn’t kill him like Clark francis did sutton and zollo and hood just said he wasn’t impressed.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:43 pm
29) I’m sure the kid is not perfect, I’m just saying that he has outstanding knowledge of the game for his age. He doesn’t dribble from side to side, or bring the ball up the sidelines. He doesn’t stop forward momentum, even when presented with a press. I’m impressed with what I’ve seen. How do stats measure knowledge of the game anyway? At that level, a bad pass can be subjective, depending on the player catching/shooting it.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:50 pm
hmmmmmm….. so let me get this straight me saying I would like to McClintock (a senior in high school)for a pg this season makes me a hypocrit b/c I said I think there are a ton of negatives to offering 8th graders.
Dictionary.com says
“hyp·o·crite - 1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs. ”
The great MLK once said, “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:52 pm
If you mean a huge ass success you are correct, Dwayne.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I hope he wears his socks like Jackie Moon.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Matt, no offense, but how much have YOU seen him play? It sounds to me like the Hunter McClintock legend has been built up on some YouTube clips and the talent evaluation of the Perry cousins. I don’t know, but I am going to lean towards skepticism.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Reminds me of Pete Maravich , not in his class yet of course but just the style.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Be skeptical…thats fine…but those who say he is awful havent seen him and the only person that I know who has (Bobby Perry) raves about the guy. I trust Bobby much more than any talent evaluator on the message boards (with a couple of exceptions) so I say, why not have the guy come to the Elite Camp and see what happens.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:05 pm
32) Well, all we see are the good. We know what he can do well at times. We do not know how often and we do not know the cost at those other times. Ex: JC could usually get in the paint the cost sometimes was turnovers/carries/ getting stuffed. We could put a highlight vid of all the times he was successful when he got in the lane and someone could think he was successful at it all the time. I know what you are saying though.. I think it would be great for all involved for the coaches to see him play against the other UK players at the elite camp. Then WE ALL MUST AGREE that if the coaches then offer, they liked what they saw.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Yeah, I agree. I think my skepticism is aimed at the folks saying “we should offer now.” I’m not saying he’s awful, but I would really have to watch him play (more than a few times) in game situations against good athletes to say that he’s good enough to play for UK.
He may very well end up being a hidden gem, I don’t know. So, let you said, let’s bring him in. I just wasn’t sure what you were lobbying for.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Matt.. was typing pretty much the same thing. 37) I can see where some think that. No one will argue that he isn’t close to being in Pete’s league, but the way he moves/plays in the videos kinda remind you of him.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:14 pm
who care how he has his hair cut? honestly
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Matt, I have read on another site that Dave Telep has stated this guy is Division I talent but only on a low to mid-major level. He stated that he considered him a So-Con type of player. Admitted he was a trickster with the ball but had poor shot selection among other things. Is Telep not a guy you would listen to when it comes to evaluation?
I personally love the videos and being a non-expert I would say sign him up…but I’m no Dave Telep.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:21 pm
39) good point. I’m not in anyway trying to suggest that Hunter is successful everytime, that would be absurd. I’m just saying that he has the understanding, just like JC, and you must admit, JC was pretty successful, even though he made a few mistakes. It’s the understanding Hunter has at his age that I’m impressed with. I’m sure there is still plenty of room for imporovement. You just don’t often see that type of understanding at this level. If Hunter doesn’t develope as a player, he’s going to make a good coach someday.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
^^ Develope = develop
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
I think combining McClintock’s flowing locks, Harrelson’s jorts, JC’s loaded potatoe soup-eye, BCG’s liver, and the Flurry’s brilliant mind could form an unstoppable force likened unto Voltron. We would never lose another game.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Just think what he could do with a hair-cut!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Thanks for all the videos, at least this way people can’t say he’s horrible without ever watching him play (happens too much). I think this kid looks great. He threads the needle with all these passes. I wonder how many turnovers he has a game for the ones that don’t quite make it. We need guards with all this drama with DJ and Liggins. I say pick him up regardless. Don’t know the scholarship situation though.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
^potato
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:31 pm
46. I agree. Flurry could be named player/coach this year to get his feet wet for future endeavors!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Maybe the hair is a valuable part of his game. It hides his eyes from the defender so they are never certain which direction he’s going next.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Deception is the key my friend. Maybe Flurry should grow his locks that long (frosted tips I might add). The co-eds will go wild when he’s draining those granny-shots from the top of the arc.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:54 pm
33 And in keeping with the Tombstone quotes “Maybe cards(Basketball) just aren’t your game, how about a spelling bee?”
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 pm
I agree that you shouldn’t take much away from a kid’s highlight video…my h.s. football highlight tape made me look like Barry Sanders, when in actuality I was more comparable to Rudy–only worse. But you can see from the videos that Hunter does possess some positive attributes–quick release, good ball handling, and court vision are three things that I noticed. He is definitely worth inviting to the Elite camp and evaluating what he can do against D-1 talent, but maybe more importantly his work ethic and “coachability”.
BTW, couldn’t believe what I read on KY stINK today; these guys listen to an “expert recruiter” who does nothing but blow smoke up their bums–wasn’t Pilgrim a “done deal” this past Monday according to the guy whose name is not even worth mentioning. At least Matt & the crew are trying to intentionally make you laugh.
May 22nd, 2008 at 6:11 pm
35 points and 8 assists against a UNC signee is pretty impressive to me. I don’t know how many of you all saw that little tidbit added into one of the videos.
May 22nd, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Just an FYI Matt, I couldn’t get the stream to work in Firefox, but it did work in IE.
I don’t know if this is a known issue or not, so I wanted to let people know.
May 22nd, 2008 at 6:57 pm
The kid doesn’t have to be an NBA player, we have had several good guards that never made it there. The kid won’t be a small guard and has a good handle, I say he’s worth the risk. If this kid is not worth the risk, then some point guard better be because if Liggins doesn’t qualify we’ll never see a half court set in order to get PPat the ball. We severely need a pg until the young commitments make there way to campus like ross-miller.
May 22nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
57) They still have Porter and Galloway, but could certainly use some depth should Liggins not qualify and Jasper decide to transfer.
May 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I would say it is a good sign for UK that the kids coach is sending clips directly to a UK Blog….
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm
39) I can edit and create a youtube video of me making 3’s all day, This kid is breaking the defense down, shooting the 3, driving through the lane and passing. How does that compare to doing one thing (getting in the paint) Anyone can post up in the paint and get blocked, but it takes talent to be 7′2″ and get blocked! lol
Everyone needs to wait and see how he does at the elite camp!!!
It has been said that this kid is 6′2″ has anyone else noticed that he is as tall or taller than most people on the court? or am I seeing this wrong???
May 23rd, 2008 at 12:13 pm
I think this kid should be a quaterback! He loves that full court pass.
