Simon & Simon’s Monday News and Views

I am a sucker for bad television….always have been and always will be. As a kid, I loved watching “Different Strokes”, “Perfect Strangers” and older greats like “Green Acres” on a daily basis. But over the years, I missed some of the great bad television due to my age at the time it was on. Such is the case for the gem of a show, “Simon & Simon.” The story of two diverse brothers (one is preppy, one is country), who form a Private Investigator service and then proceed to have wacky hijinks is a great American tale….well actually it is pretty bad, but this weekend, I found myself watching seven episodes that I had TIVO’d from the new “Sleuth” television network. Most people only know the show for its theme song (which is great), but I learned by watching that it can be a solid way to waste a Sunday afternoon. Every show features the same story arc (story needs to be solved, brothers have different methods to solve it, they use both methods and it is solved) and in between, they make fun of each other for being adopted. Its all in good fun. So if you get “Sleuth TV” (and I am sure you dont), check it out….it seems to be on every other hour alternating with “Magnum PI.”

To the news…….

(1): A relatively quiet weekend around the UK front. The only real news is the rumor mill that Derrick Jasper may be reconsidering the transfer decision. I spoke with someone close to the team this weekend who said they talked to Derrick in the middle of last week and that he was “having mixed emotions” about leaving Kentucky. UK has apparently told Derrick that he has as long as he needs to make the decision and have given him no timetable in which he has to complete it. Most of the players on the team had all assumed Derrick was gone and that his decision was made long ago. But as of the middle of the last week, it looks like there was at least a glimmer of hope. In the end, my money is still on Derrick transferring, but it looks like the door isnt shut just yet.

(2): The Herald Leader article on Billy Gillispie ended up being relatively tame. It did however dispel many of the rumors that have circulated about him. What I found interesting about the story was the way in which Gillispie was portrayed as having a deep desire to help the University as a whole, including calling President Todd when the Governor announced budget cuts, offering his help. President Todd and Mitch Barnhart both gave positive quotes on Gillispie throughout and the article actually was quite positive all the way around. Definitely worth reading, even by the most adament Herald Leader Hater.

(3): Bat Cats begin the SEC Tournament this week as the #4 seed. If the Cats can make some noise in Birmingham, they will potentially get to host a subregional in the NCAA Tournament, a great honor and a great event that the fans will love. They begin play in the double elimination tournament this week and we will keep you updated on how it goes throughout.

(4): Finally, one little summer basketball note. During our Barnstorming Tour, I talked to Ramel Bradley about the recruits coming in and what he thought of them. He didnt know some of the guys but was impressed with Kevin Galloway. “He really can play,” Ramel said, “he has the ability to get to the basket and can score pretty easily. I think he will be really good.” That is high praise from a guy who (as I have come to know) doesnt give it out easily.

Much more on the Barnstorming stories this week…..the Tour is now over and we can begin other endeavors around these parts. Stay tuned all day as we get going, and remember that beginning tonight, the radio show will be streaming at 8 pm…..

could somebody post a link for the gillispie article?

  2. ConcreteCat Says:

I will never believe DJ s gone until he tells us hmself!

  3. bigblue6 Says:

I was always skeptical of the BCG rumors being that there were no pics or vids. I thought it was a great article…

  4. ConcreteCat Says:

http://www.kentucky.com/254/story/408374.html This article is a good start but may be a little to late to save the reputation of some reporters at the LHL.

Matt what is the link to your show’s stream?

  5. Shat Jones Says:

Is there any way the Lexington Herald leader can find another opportunity to mention BCG’s two DUI arrests?

The article on Sunday, being the 4th time it’s appeared in their paper in 12 months, couldn’t be the last mention of that, not a chance.

Who cares if that’s factual publicly available information? It’s not a conviction.

People get arrested everyday and don’t get convicted. Why is it appropriate for this to be mentioned once, let alone 4 times?

Yea, LHL dispels rumors that 90% of the people reading haven’t even heard about. What a bundle of crap that you accept.

  6. drew0422 Says:

I had heard every single rumor in that article.

  7. Shat Jones Says:

    # 6 drew0422 - Nice Drew, being part if the 10% doesn’t stop you from being counted. lol

  8. joe crawford is the man Says:

    5. To me that’s fine to mention it as long as they also mention the disposition of the case as well. They told you themselves there wasn’t a conviction. It was a good article that made him look good why look for stuff to bitch about?

  9. Inside Info 35 Says:

GO BIG BLUE I love UK Basketball and I love Derrick Jasper.

  10. UKCatFan01ABC Says:

Wow, according to the paper, all of the rumors were -just that. How ’bout that? All that smoke and no fire. Looks like we all just over reacted.

    Go cats.

  11. joe crawford is the man Says:

    10. The only rumor I’ve heard they didn’t dispel was why Legion left. Like someone already said if he’s doing all that people say say he is someone would have video of it. Look at Eustachy and that was before youtube was all the rage.

  12. UKBoo Says:

    5) I think the only way to be fair is to talk about it all. Those arrests were the kindling behind most of the rumor fire in the first place. Heck, some people were even blowing those out of proportion. Those arrests were reason to give UK fans cause, and we have Sutton to thank for that. But I saw no reason to press it until something happened in KY. And aside from some imaginative (spiteful?) fan’s rumors, it has not…

  13. UKBoo Says:

    10) Uhh.. we all didn’t.. I didn’t buy any of it without some press behind it. And Tipton never counts as press..

  14. boots45 Says:

OT - My daughter brought home a CD of music inspired by Chronicles of Narnia from a Young Life meeting. Excerpt from a review of the CD on Amazon “Finishing the same way it begins, this Narnia release ends with the infectious “You’re the One” from worship leader extraordinaire Chris Tomlin.”

    Who’d have thunk it?

  15. RodneyfromMcKee Says:

Matt, are you now going to “spill the beans” on all the stuff you
    couldn’t talk about?

  16. ConcreteCat Says:

    11. Agreed! The reason they didn’t dispell the Legion rumor s because Tipton started it! Of course the LHL isn’t going to convict itself. Instead they make it sound like the fans are to blame, my 2nd look at the article has me disappointed again!

  17. Clandestine Says:

90% of all Rumors are not true. These were likely started by anti-UK people and UK fans did little to defend our Coach. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

  18. joe crawford is the man Says:

    16. Maybe there is a section of the fanbase who was behind it. You have to admit we were an extremely divided fan base last year maybe the people loyal to tubby did start some rumors. Its funny how sometimes we get upset over minor things. I know if the courier journal did an article addressing all the Pitino rumors I would love to read that

  19. TheOutlawJoseyWales Says:

Thank You Matt Jones.. the Jasper news was better than seeing Hill dawg at Markers Mark!

  20. I'm Just Sayin Says:

My conspiratorial mind can’t help but wonder if the tone of that article may have been a little different before the Tipton flare up.

  21. King Nate Says:

Mark Maggard is basically saying on his site that DJ is coming back:

Ok, so I’ve spent the last few hours talking to a lot of smart people regarding Jasper and his future with UK.

At this point, nothing is certain, but I have to say, those who I feel have the best handle on the situation fully expect that Jasper will return to UK.

BCG’s trip to Cali didn’t happen, but not because it was a “bad” thing. I expect BCG to make that trip in the near future.

Those who are saying that Jasper wants a year off, or that he doesn’t want to be a team leader are so utterly mistaken. Ignore that kind of talk.

Nothing is decided yet, but if you asked me to bet money, I’d now bet that Jasper will return. I wouldn’t bet more than I’d mind losing, but I’d still have to bet on him coming back.

    mm

  22. bamacat Says:

It is funny how all the people who dispelled the rumors have a lot to lose otherwise. I like the way the ex police chief was given a plush job at UK to keep his mouth shut.

  23. maxim99 Says:

22 - are you the CEO of “The Rumor Mill” or what?

  24. ConcreteCat Says:

    18. Yes agreed but if you are a “True to Tubby” fan then you are not a real Cat fan. I was a Tubby fan/supporter until he got on the plane to Gopherland. Now I have some distaste for him because how he left, hell it made me look bad for sticking up for him and his “class”. We are better off now with BCG, he appreciates UK fanatics and relates to us better than any other Coach has!!

Anybody with the KSR radio show link?

  25. UKBoo Says:

    18) I agree with you. I think there is/was a section of the fan base that are a part of the Coach G Rumor making/spreading club. And Tipton is probably the president.. (Am I starting a rumor?)

  26. joe crawford is the man Says:

    24. I agree with what you say. I even took some on here to task for questioning jaspers’ “committment” and said he was more committed than the man who brung him here. As far as a link try googling 93.9 the ticket and you get it off there.

  27. maxim99 Says:

I disagreed with 99% of the rumors that were floating around, and had to listen to the people who were believers…my favorite were the people who said..”I know he has a dirver because I know the driver real well” or the famous “the 2 girls that they are talking about in the hot tub, a friend of mine dated one of them.”

  28. UKBoo Says:

    20) I honestly think this was the article that has been in the works all along. This isn’t the typical piece that takes a day to write. There are several interviews that must be scheduled and these sources were not all together at a press conference. I think people just assumed Tipton was writing one of his masterpieces when they heard of the article and ran with it..

  29. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

I think it is pretty remarkable how BCG bounced back in the SEC. He was obviously beaten down pretty badly, but my dad always tells me it’s not what happens to you in life it’s about how you handle the things that happen to you in life. Gillispie fought hard and got us back where we needed to be. We played great in the SEC and that shows the kind of character that BCG has. He gets knocked down and get back up swinging. I’m so glad we have a man like that as our coach. All these people that were spreading rumors around campus aren’t true UK fans. Even the people on this blog who were spreading rumors at the time are definitely not true fans. I for one didn’t buy into all the rumors and would never spread anything of the sort because I am a true blue fan. I think Matt should go back in the archives and expose anyone who bought into or started a rumor about our coach.

  30. barkley25 Says:

Ok, let me go on record now (as if I haven’t before) by saying I want DJ to stay. But I have been watching this blog for a while. You know what I haven’t seen? The idea of letting DJ have a talk with Joe Crawford. Maybe I just missed it. If Joe would talk to DJ and explain to him that staying was the best decision he’s EVER made concerning his career, maybe that would make the decision easier. I remember not too long ago when everyone was almost cursing Joe because he “left.” Now everyone praises his efforts while he was here, and deservedly so. Now I’ve put in my 2 cents worth, and I’ll shut up now.

  31. Section14RowY Says:

Here is a quote from BobbyBlue over at KentuckyInk in a forum about Jasper: Thanks–Can’t imagine why a teenaged girl from WVa would want to move out west–Ain’t love grand
It would sure seem like UNLV is borderline tampering, especially if Kruger mentioned DJ by name.
Course that may all be fabrication by their version of matt Jones who also manufactures stuff.

Seems as though he doesn’t like the Chief Blogger over here.

  32. joe crawford is the man Says:

Maybe its just me being naïve but I think Lon Krugers’ record is probaly a little better than BobbyBlue from KentuckyInk.

  33. ZW Says:

Rick and A.J. are cool, but Magnum and T.C. are cooler.
