PTI and BCG talk about the 8th Graders

by @ 5:44 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Two interesting afternoon media notes:

(1): For the first time in a long time, I saw PTI live. My man Tony Kornheiser (my favorite sportswriter and the best radio host not named Howard Stern) and Michael Wilbon ripped the practice of offering 8th and 9th graders. They used UK as an example but didnt really rip UK, just the practice in general.

(2): Billy Clyde was on the Scott Van Pelt show and said that UK would honor commitments of young players, regardless of their development. That means that if Avery, Zollo, Miller, Euton, etc dont develop, they still will be coming to UK. That is good from an ethical standpoint, but sure puts a LOT of pressure on the staff to identify talent early on.

The second of those stories could be one of huge importance in the future. I like Gillispie’s attitude of honoring his word, but it makes the whole process of offering young even more dangerous.

There was a big article about this in USA Today too. Although it mentioned other schools who had recruited early UK was the main focus.

  2. GoCats Says:

this story is only going to make UK look bad in my opinion. I agree with the Zollo recruitment 100% but the only way we come out of this looking good is if Avery is the next jordan/lebron. That is the only chance the media will ever give this one up.

  3. C-A-T-S Says:

NORTH CAROLINA HAS TAKEN TWO EIGHT GRADER COMMITTMENTS, WHY DO THEY ALWAYS GET A FREE PASS IN THE MEDIA.

I don’t see anyone complaing about UK accepting a verbal from Dominique Ferguson. LOL I guess bc he is the real deal.

    8th grader de-commits to UCLA
we’ve got nothing - UCLA was 3-4 years ahead of us

  5. minton06hd Says:

its no easier to tell if a young recruit will turn out good than it is to tell if some hotshot will end up being a lazy dopehead who quits the team. of course, recruiting dopeheads doesnt look as creepy

  6. ukbbfan Says:

cant believe we have to wait 4 years to see how this one plays out.

  7. MoBettaBlue Says:

i never played with a basketball superstar, however i played with some athletes in middle school, some went on to play in the NFL… you can’t convince me that you can spot out talent at that age. Mayo turned out pretty good, but he was billed to be Jordan and Lebron…

  8. MoBettaBlue Says:

i heard a rumor that lee todd, or mitch barnhart had something to say (not totally negative, but not all positive) about BCG’s committment… anyone know anything about that or is that just a rumor

  9. Matt Jones Says:

UNC has not taken two 8th graders….USC has

  10. minton06hd Says:

7..dont forget, jordan also got cut from his high school jv team

  11. gossie21 Says:

He may plan to honor the committments but it would not be surprising to learn that Gillispie will give them the Majerus pep talk if they don’t develop. “Sure you can come here, but you won’t ever play, so maybe you should go somewhere where you can get some playing time.”

  12. T-Will is better than Ramel Says:

    this blog is lame

  13. BravoBigBlue Says:

I’m with you Matt. This is way too dangerous. Let’s play it safe. Does Sheray Thomas have any brothers who are juniors or seniors in high school?

  14. NewUK Says:

I don’t understand why this is such a big issue. Ppl feed off all these columns, blogs, air time, etc. We are getting players which we have been praising about for months. Billy is doing what he is paid to do, build a program and win. Stop hating.

  15. dsoco88 Says:

If this was September….the 8th grade thing would not have been no more than a footnote. Fact is baseball and basketball can’t fill u 30 minutes of PTI

  16. minton06hd Says:

if this was september, we would be only a few months from the next uk final four appearance (per derrick jasper getting his head out of his arse)

  17. zman Says:

I don’t see what the big deal is taking a ‘chance’ on a few young players. If BCG was signing or getting verbals from 3 or 4 per class, then maybe I would think it was more an issue.

If they work out, Billy C. looks like a genius and UK reaps the benefits. It they don’t, honor the commitment and let them become role players. Even if you recruit all juniors and seniors, not all of them turn out to be what they were billed. Unfortunately, our recruiting has been below par and I feel BCG is trying to play catch-up.

  18. deWildcats Says:

    #17 - ditto
Too much is being made of this - OH!! so many long for the days of OTS recruiting tactics - probably not; I’ll take this any day!!!

  19. truBLU Says:

Some video footage of Jaronne Maymon who basically will commit if we offer because of Coach Webster

    http://www.hoopsreport.com/player_database_details.php?id=897

  20. truBLU Says:

    *Jeronne

  21. lueker Says:

10 … I could be mistaken but I believe he was cut from his Freshman team, not JV.

  22. truBLU Says:

He’s 6′6″ 235lb–basically a Chuck Hayes that can shoot 3’s and has a decent handle

  23. Woo Says "I Take Yo Money!" Says:

we don’t need anymore 6′6 players unless they are Jordan, Lebron, or Magic Johnson

  24. nipplehead reborn Says:

    …Howard Stern IS great

  25. truBLU Says:

He could be all those rolled up into one–he can definitely bang

  26. nlk Says:

When he arrived, BCG said the program needed players, that recruiting was the lifeblood of a program, and that involved building relationships early in the recruiting process, not in the spring signing period of their senior season. He is doing what he said he would. If anybody had a problem with that, they should have raised their concerns at that time. Else, shut up and watch them line up to commit!

  27. C A T S Cats Cats Cats Says:

Billy Clyde is doing exactly what he was hired to do, recruit the best athletes possible. It is about time UK was back on the cutting edge getting top notch talent and the times have changed since the last time we were able to stockpile a large level of talented players. BCG is doing what most UK fans want, top tier talent that includes some top shelf Kentucky kids.

  28. ale8one Says:

#3 - who are the two 8th graders North Carolina has taken and what class are they in and when did they commit?

  29. ukbballrulez33 Says:

high risk, high reward…right? I think Gillispie knows more about what he’s doing than we do.

  30. cobrecat Says:

Since the coach signed(?) last year it has been EXCITING, so far he has been the man!

  31. WeNeedJPBlevins Says:

I like he looks of this Maymon kid! He looks like he can bang, i like that in a player, kinda like leonard washington without the baggage. we all woulda been happy with him if i recall, so what’s wrong with this guy? he’s a 4 star.
    (24) How many 6-6 players do we have built like this, all 6-6 guys dont’ play the same position.

  32. WeNeedJPBlevins Says:

i’d be willing to bet he commits within the next week, bcg won’t let another guy go to pearl’s girls even if we don’t need him

  33. NewUK Says:

instead of talkin bout all this bull$hit why don’t we talk bout how great rondo is playing in the playoffs

  34. UKCatFan01ABC Says:

I don’t mind a kid wanting to commit but I wonder about offering a full ride to a kid that’s not even played high school ball yet. I’m not coach so it doesn’t matter.

    Go Cats!

  35. Dave C Says:

Look, it’s not like he is putting “All” of his eggs in underclassmen. Now if he committed to multiple 8th graders or 9th graders in the same class period, then I would be concerned. I listened to his interview today, and he basically said that if you don’t do some of this, you are left behind. I tend to agree.

  36. IjustWantToWin Says:

20 Where did you find he said he will committ if we offer because of Webster, I think that is good news. He looks very good on the video.

Villarino is not 6 6, nor is Ross Miller or these 6-8 players who are potentially 7 footers. Besides, look at Jordan, Bryant, Wade. 6-6 to 6-8 is a good height to be very versatile . I am not saying we definitely a Jordan, but theoretically it is good height to be targeting. But I think we look pretty balanced over the next few years with the already signed players.

  37. K-NOTH Says:

when did hopson commit to MS st?

  38. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

38.) As a junior. I think the word back then was that he committed to play with the Delk(s) kid(s), but if I am not mistaken he transferred to louisville.

  39. Shat Jones Says:

    Matt-

No apology (or at least an “I stand corrected”) for previously saying BCG would pull those scholarship offers if the kids didn’t develop?

  40. T-Will is better than Ramel Says:

39.) Yep he did transfer to the ville. And y’all bout to get crushed next year in da Hall hahahaha

  41. dudewheresmygillispie Says:

Tony Kornhole is overrated. He knows how to talk and write but doesn’t have any experience in sports but doesn’t know what he is talking about. The media is littered with guys who know how to frame arguments and sound intelligent but don’t squat about the technicals of sports. Kornholio falls in that camp for me. Sorry Matt I can’t get on board. As for BCG, he can recruit 3rd graders for all I care. Recruiting is all about marketing and marketing is all about the brand. And right now the UK brand is rising from the ashes. Go Cats.

  42. passthebluegrass Says:

why should CBC honor it when the kids are free to change their mind? i’m assuming these commits haven’t signed anything. if they can screw uk, uk should reserve the right to screw them??? in other words if they’re serious, let’s just sign a contract and not worry about it.

  43. truBLU Says:

  44. IjustWantToWin Says:

Has anybody heard if Billy is interested in the kid, or is our schollarship situation a problem. The video was quite impressive.

  45. IjustWantToWin Says:

I am talking about Jaronne Maymon above.

  46. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

41.) Thanks I am looking foward to it. I really wish you the best…… now go to bed

    PWNAGE! Sorry, I had to…

    http://www.jibjab.com/sendables/share_view/BIceWsBPzjBmUPR4FXUV3PRd

  49. MEWH Says:

Don’t kid yourselves on the second part. If a kid sucks coming out of high school, they won’t get a scholly. The excuse can be made that the kid didn’t continue to put the effort in to stay one of the top players in the country. Just as Mike Williams, Oliver Simmons, and Adam Willimas have not been shown the door, they have moved in a respectable fashion.
