Brandon Webb brings the pain to the National League

by @ 4:25 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Former Wildcat pitcher and Ashland’s native son, Brandon Webb, is doing nothing abnormal when you compare this year to his past two seasons, but by getting off to the best individual start in Diamondbacks history, one of the most underappreciated players in baseball is finally starting to get a little love.

After handling the Mets last night, Webb now sits with a 7-0 record to go with his 2.49 ERA for the D-backs, who just happen to be the best team in baseball right now.  Even more impressive is that the 2006 Cy Young winner and 2007 runner-up has held opponents to a .197 batting average against him.  Since the start of 2006, Webb is 46-18 with an earned run average of 3.00.  Not too shabby for a guy who doesn’t find himself the focus of Sportscenter profiles or on the forefront of MLB marketing.

Webb looks to continue his dominance over the NL on Thursday against the Phillies.  And, just for the record, I picked the Diamondbacks to win the World Series back in March.  So, let’s just get that out of the way now so no one argues with me in the fall when I say “I told you so”.

In somewhat related baseball news, the Bat Cats took an L in both games of yesterday’s double-header with LSU, running their record to 34-13 overall and 12-13 in the SEC.  They currently lead LSU at the moment in the final game of the series, but we’ll get you the final score when it’s available.

I live close to Ashland and got to watch Brandon play some baseball. His story is crazier than some know. He was a good high school picture but he was not rated as the best in the area. He wasnt rated as the second best picture either. Most of us that seen him play high school would have never dreamed he would be this good. We are very proud of him and it is really awesome that someone from this area has done so well. He is a class act and when he comes home he dont act like he is a super star either. Good luck with the rest of your career and when you are done Ashland will be waiting on you with open arms. GO CATS

2- I know Matt Anderson sort of flamed out, but he was similar. Not in personality to Webb, because I dont know him, but in sucess. I heard when he went to Rice he threw like 91 tops. In the majors he hit 103 on the radar gun. I dont know if he still plays. A dude I know went to PRP, and he said they rocked him, but someone saw something and they developed him. Anyway, good to see Webb doing well.

    great start so far though!

Cats swept at home by LSU; not a good way to take advantage of a home series. Don’t see the Cats going far in the post season if they can’t take care of business at home.

Damn…I didn’t realized Webb was a former Cat!!!

  8. Brandon Webb Masterful Again « Imaginary Diamond Says:

[...] Kentucky Sports Radio admires the accomplishments of Webb, an alumnus of the University of Kentucky. [...]
