See, I can use word-play in headlines, too.
I thought since we were wrapping up the ‘08 class, we could go ahead and get a jump on the ‘09 kiddos.
I spoke with Jon Hood a little bit ago, and we discussed his recruitment, and his feelings towards UK, Duke, and a few other schools. He’s been offered by UK, UT, Ole Miss, and Georgia.
On being recruited…
“It’s still fun, and it’s an honor to be recruited by all these great schools and great coaches. I’m just trying to keep it open.”
On UT…
“I really like Coach Pearl. I’ve also played a lot with and against Scotty Hopson. The SEC is just so athletic, and everyone plays so fast.”
On Duke…
“They’ve been out to see me. I understand their priorities, and I really like Coach K and Coach Wojo. I’m interested to see who they bring in (to replace Dawkins).”
On UK…
“I love UK. I really wanted to go to Lexington, and take just a regular, unofficial visit. I went to class, just to see how everyone was treated. It was so normal, and I loved it. I really needed to see that. I look at UK like it’s just another school, though. I need to look at them like anyone else, and make sure that it’s the best fit. I still want to take a couple more looks at UK.”
On his decision…
“I want to decide this summer. I don’t want to have to worry about who’s in the crowd or anything like that next year. But I would say that UK is my leader right now, and everyone else is together behind them.”
On UK fans…
“They are the smartest fans in the world.”
On a lowly blogger, Thomas Beisner, exploiting a school project video for his own personal gain…
“I loved it. I thought it was hilarious.”
Overall, the kid was a joy to talk to. He was very intelligent, polite, and grounded. He said he was given a piece of advice from a coach at a small school, who told him, “you’ll know when you know.” That appears to be his creed as he goes through the recruiting process. He really sounds determined to stay focused and wait until he’s sure before he makes any decisions about his future.
He also didn’t sound completely sold on Duke, as some folks have been reporting. In fact, he sounded rather smitten with the Wildcats and Coach G….
We’ll have more from Jon in the near future.

April 29th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
5) Sounds like he may have been recruited by Dawkins as well. Him leaving seems to help our chances.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Wonder if that “advice” was given to him by Yogi Berra?
As a UK fan, I say this kid is the smarest we’ve ever recruited.

Sounds like a cool kid. This kid would be a true hometown here in Lexington. The Kentucky folk will love him when he’s knocking down three after three.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
He will be a good one, like to get him for sure. It’s still way too early to get any hopes up however. It’s interesting that almost all of his offers have come from the SEC. I guess it’s a regional recognition thing, huh?
April 29th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I say again……..Kentucky kids know the history, the tradition, Blue Blood in their veins. They have done well for the Cats in years past.
Chapman, Farmer, Pelphry, Feldhause, minnifield, Turpin, Lee, Givens, the list goes on.
Add your name to the history list Jon Hood!!

No News but Kecman committed to OSU as expected.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
nice one.
April 29th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Nice work Evan. Sounds like a very down to earth kid with a good head on his shoulders. I hope he continues to get comfortable with Lexington and UK and decides there’s no place like home. He’d love it at UK!
April 29th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Add Derek Anderson, Scott Padgett, Cameron Mills to that list as well. It would really suck to see a homegrown UK player go to Duke. But hopefully he’ll stick with home. Homegrown players just play with more passion cuz they truly understand the tradition…plus most yearn for a chance to wear the blue and white. He would be a good get and seems to fit the body type and game style Billy G likes. Hope to see him committing to UK sometime this summer.

13) I believe that the headline makes sense. Hood is a slang term used as an adjective, instead of a noun, to mean urban, tough, gangster, rough…Hood.
April 29th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
16 and 21
don’t forget Anthony Epps, born and raised in Lebanon, KY. 1993 State Champs over a Cameron Mills led Dunbar Bulldogs squad.
watch it 7, the Big Red Machine will run you over!
April 29th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
You guys are forgetting the two great players that UK got right down there in little old Madisonville, Frank Ramsey and none other than Travis Ford. I sure would like to see us add Hood to the Madisonville Big Blue Tradition.
April 29th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
You thought ESPN / media was bad when Lofton left KY to go to UT, even though Louisville didn’t want him either? Imagine if a KY kid goes to DUKE, their little love child. I can’t even stomach the thought.

April 29th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

April 29th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

April 29th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

April 29th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Harrellson has SIGNED with the Cats, boys!
April 29th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
There is alot of talk around Madisonville that Hood will commit to UK withing the next two weeks. Take that for what it’s worth.
April 29th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Soon coach k will be at his home in “tears” with his arms around him.
April 29th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Hood signing with UK will make everyone forget there was a kid from Hopkinsville that went south. I predict UK will be better off. Scotty already thinks he one and done.
April 29th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
“thinks he is one and done”
April 29th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Every living thing needs food. Some thing survive by eating what they get. Some thing excel by getting what they need.
Kentucky basketball needs homegrown Kentucky talent. They are the lifeblood that gives us an advantage due to the knowledge of the game they have from a much younger age than most kids from other places. I’ve been following this kid for the last couple of years and he will be something special.
Let’s hope we’re lucky enough to get him to keep the tradition alive!
Hood is the next step this Kentucky program needs in 2009. Banner time baby!!!
We love you Hood! You already know that though.
April 30th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
I sure hope Hood comes to Kentucky. I saw him play at the FIrst Kentucky Classic at Muhlenberg North two years ago when he was only a sophomore and had no idea who he was. After about 10 minutes into the game I asked my nephew, “WHo is this KId.” My nephew said, “Thats Jon Hood. I played against him in AAU ball two years ago and he was about 5 foot 9 and was terrible.” Then my nephew said, “He’s definitely not terrible anymore.” Hood had alot of game. He could handle the ball very well, he could shoot, and he could drive the ball and dunk. That same summer I saw where he blew up on the AAU scene and I was so happy for him. I hope we get him and I hope he turns into a 4 year stud at UK. I would love to see BCG develop him into a great NBA prospect. Hood definitely has the upside.
