1. I have gotten behind posting the Kentucky Greats list going on right now on UKMadness.com, so here is a recap:
#18: Pat Riley
#17: Johnny Cox
#16: Keith Bogans
#15: Frank Ramsey
#14: Cliff Hagan
Bogans ranked too low. Should be in the 8-10 range.
2. Rick Bozich writes a good article about the path Pat Riley took to the Hall of Fame, starting at the University of Kentucky.
3. Have you ever wondered which Cats are actually good students? Well, I won’t tell you who (Mark Coury is obvious), but 5 Cats were put on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
4. And we have a winner for the “Why the hell is that guy declaring early” award, and its…drumroll please… Florida center Marreese Speights. I was suprised to see that Speights averaged over 14 points and 8 rebounds this year, but I watched every SEC team play at least twice this year and Speights wouldn’t rank in my top 25 players I saw. Have fun as a 2nd round draft pick without a contract.
5. The season is just 3 days removed, and already there are Top 10 and Top 25 lists all around the major websites. CNNSI.com has put out a Top 10, but with the stipulation that they are guessing which players will delcare. Andy Katz composed ESPN.com’s list of Top 25, with some interesting notes. First, only 3 SEC teams in the rankings, Tennessee at 20, Florida at 23, and Mississippi St. at 25. The list also includes 7 Big East teams, making it top conference. CBSsportsline.com has also released a Top 26, with North Carolina and Duke at the top.
6. Courtesy of the website AllBalls.com, here are the Top 10 F-bomb soundbites from athletes. Pretty funny stuff.

Riley deserves the HOF honors and I’m glad he will have a plaque this year. Billy Gillispie will be in there soon enough. I don’t know about Tubby but Pitino is definitely a Hall of Famer.
How is Gilmore not in there yet?!?

Speights is a man.
Not a better sophmore big in the league

Speights is a projected top 10 pick in the 2009 draft so it seems unlikely he would slip to the 2nd round this year. I would imagine if he was projected as a 2nd this year he would opt to return to school.

I encourage him to go…one less Gaytor to worry about. Don’t listen to the intern Maurice, you’ll be a 1st rounder for sure (wink, wink).

Speights isn’t exactly a pushover. He did pretty well against UK in both of his games.
April 10th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Just about every mock draft has Speights as a first rounder this year.

I don’t know about ranking Bogans over Hagan and Ramsey. Those guys are both in the basketball Hall of Fame! They led UK to one title, and had an undefeated season that could very well have resulted in another title, if not for a dumb NCAA rule at the time that made players ineligible if they had already graduated, regardless of how much eligibility they had already used up. Bogans’ UK career turned out to be really great, but I think those two guys clearly achieved more than he did while they were Wildcats.

Speights will probably be a first round pick, but I really do not see him ever doing anything in the league.

In many instances, when undergraduates declare for the NBA draft, they are not doing their classwork. Thus, they have no choice. Don’t know if it’s true in the Speights case (I don’t even know his abilities) but it could help explain his decision.

10 - Really? It has nothing to do with their athletic ability and opportunity to make millions of dollars? They are declaring because they dont do school work….interesting.
April 10th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Speights hasn’t hired an agent, thus he reserves the right to return to school. Most likely, he’ll be a mid to late first rounder.
April 10th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
The winner of the award is not Speights, he is projected as high as a late lottery pick.
The winner is Ronald Steele. He didn’t play a single game last year and is coming off surgery on both knees. Technically he has graduated and been at Alabama for four years now, so that may disqualify him from the award as well.

ESPN.com has Speights as the 10th pick overall.

Bryan:
Just FYI. Sports Illustrated’s early top 25 list for next season(in this week’s issue with KU on the cover)has UK checking in at #19.
Now that Bill Self has said he’s staying at Kansas, it’s time for Billy to say the same thing with UK and start solidifying that ranking for next year.
