Laettner is Scared of the Big Blue Nation

by @ 5:04 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

I read this in Sports Illustrated this week and had to laugh. Thanks to our good friends at Wildcat Nation (still the best message board forum for UK sports on the net) who scanned it in, Laettner’s thoughts can be seen by more than just those of us who still subscribe to magazines. Christian was asked by Dan Patrick whether he was more hated by UK or UNC fans, and this was his answer….

No I-64 or I-75 late at night through Appalachia, Christian?

    Good plan…

Say what you will about Laettner but after hearing his answer to his you must admit that he’s a very smart man.

  3. jcarter_uk1 Says:

Yep, real good plan. Im sure he does all he can to stay out of Eastern KY cause he’ll end up at the bottom of an abo\andoned mine shaft.

  4. Gerry DiNardo Says:

got that gem hanging on my fridge

My beef isn’t so much with him as much as it is with CBS for showing the shot every time they show an NCAA game. For crying out loud there have been some buzzer beaters and big shots since then. Why not show Mills shot or Scott’s shot in 98 after every time they show 92? Then the dUKies (who are about to be the Notre Dame of College BB, alway hyped under achieve) might get offended and they like ESPN can’t offend the ACC, now can they?

It makes our dislike for him seem bigger than it is. His fate was sealed when he hit that shot. His next game was poor compared to his average that year and he was career journey man and reservist in the NBA…that should be all the evidence that one needs to realize that God is a Wildcat fan.

That and the fact that Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill didn’t pan out to much even though Hill is still around trying to pay the bills and Hurley is a decent HS coach.

Personally I could care less if he is scared or not but maybe the Tar Heel fans feel a little disrespected..lol

Typical Duke bust: still having to drive everywhere instead of fly.

  12. slappy Says:

ha. that’s funny. good for us.

  13. CalifCatFan Says:

Oh, and by the way Mr. Laettner, don’t be driving down the hiway in my neck of the woods either.

  14. fiddlerky Says:

I heard this when he was on air with him…I laughed for a good 5 minutes.

  15. SeoulCat Says:

Probably a good idea Christian, probably a good idea. I personally know several “good ole local folk” back in Carter and Greenup counties that would probably utilitze that shotgun/rifle hangin’ in the back of the pickup truck if they were to run across this Dukie at a late night gas station or Denny’s.

  16. 00tonydelk00 Says:

5&10, what about the fact that he should have been ejected earlier in the game?

  17. jauk11 Says:

Certainly one of my favorite villains, Duke was extremely lucky to win the game, it was more of a gift than anything else. I have always had respect for both Grant Hill and Bobby Hurley but the quote from Christian calling Kentuckians toothless hillbillies or something to that effect did him in for me. As seniors they had a better team but I have no doubt that that years UNLV team would have beat them nine out of ten times in a series. Three of UNLV’s starters had the worst games of their career and Greg Anthony fouling out, which he never did, was the final straw. UNLV still had the last possession.. Wonder what Christian ever did with his wonderful Duke degree, I have never heard of him doing anything off the court, but I am sure he is quite proud of himself for having two states hate him for his arrogant attitude, quite an epitaph.

  18. edge Says:

Well being a UK fan…I have no beef with Laettner..yes his shot beat UK…and you are mad that it is shown all over again…why?..some say it is one of the greatest college games played….and Laettner was probaly one of the greatest college basketball players of all time..at least during my era of watching basketball…I mean when was the last time you saw a big man run the court shoot the ball from anywhere he wanted and it went in…Even before the shot I liked him and even after the shot I still liked him.. I remember watching him as a freshman and I knew there was something special about that player…even though my heart was broken because of the way we lost..but its time to grow up…UK played their hearts out and lost to Duke..during that time Duke was the team to beat..they had great players…UK returned the favor in 98 when they beat Duke to go to the final four..If we have a rivalry with Duke anymore…it is in recruiting…people cause such a hype between the two schools because of the game in 1992

  19. K-NOTH Says:

5 is right on. 18? i have to question your loyalty. seriously. lots of good players out there to admire…but not him.
i think they show that shot over and over because the media makes sweet love to duke, and UK is the 800 pound go-rila.

  20. BIGBLUEDAVE Says:

    18, are you kidding me?
You obviously don’t know your UK basketball and especially that game in 92. The reason we hate Laettner is not only because he hit the shot that beat us, at the buzzer.
He, earlier in that game, deliberately STOMPED hard on Aminu Timberlake while Aminu was on the ground. The officials missed it, only seeing the aftermath for which he was given a technical foul. He would have been thrown out of the game, if they’d seen the whole thing happen! It was ridiculous.
Then, that little butt dart champion hit that freakin shot. That whole story is why we hate that homo.

  21. K-NOTH Says:

Paul McCoy sounds like an interesting player, all-state football? wonder if he gets a shot at both teams?

  22. CO Wildcat Says:

    Well put Dave. Well put.

  23. BPatte Says:

I still think somebody should have clocked him!

  24. CatsfaninFL Says:

Thanks for pointing that out Dave.

Bpatte, I believe Coach Cheney called that somebody a “goon” :-) I would have been up for some goon action on Laettner after that stomp.

  25. BIGBLUEDAVE Says:

    Thanks 22 & 24.
And I just love how every March they show that shot and talk about them beating us in 92 over and over again, but fail to mention the AMAZING comeback we had in 98 against them in the elite 8 to come from 18 down (17 down in the 2nd half), to win and we went on to win the Title!
For some reason, Billy Packer and the rest of those communist pricks conveniently forget to mention that, when they are talking about Duke over UK in 92….not to mention us beating them in the 78 Title game!
To the untrained college basketball fan, they would think that Duke alwasy beats UK.
Well…we here in Big Blue Nation, know otherwise…GO CATS!

  26. sortleader2 Says:

Goon action? Why was Gimel Martinez not given the contract “hit” by the Godfather is beyond me. As for CBS continually showing “The Shot”, they are for whoever is a winner. Face it. We lost. History is told by the victors. Luck Faitner!!!!
