In a move that likely upsets those that want to see Bruce Pearl away from Tennessee, Indiana has offered its job to Tony Bennett of Washington State according to FOXSPORTS’ JEFF GOODMAN. Bennett, who just had his salary doubled by the Cougars, now must decide if it is worth moving across the country to take over the struggling IU program. For my money, this is likely the best hire IU could make considering their goal to keep their basketball in the 1960s and continue to make their players wear their silly pants. Bennett is an up and coming coaching superstar and may be the best X and O guy in his generation. But he sure plays slow and boring, exactly what IU seems to generally want. We shall see if he takes the job….and remember this….if neither Pearl or Bennett take the job, it is hard to think of another “slam dunk” coach who would.

That would continue the trend that every big ten school is required to play the exact same style. If you were to make all the big ten schools wear the same uniforms there would be no way tell the teams apart by the way they play. Indiana, ohio state, michigan state, wisonsin, minnesota, illinois, penn state, etc… they all play exactly the same.

matt espn is saying they haven’t offered, but i trust you
March 29th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
This is interesting since there is an article on espn.com that says they spoke with Bennett this morning and he stated he hasn’t even spoken with Indiana and has not been offered the job. That Goodman guy has always been erratic with his news. I wonder if this is just another one of his ploys to try to be the first to break a story without actual facts?

Likewise, the talk down here in Sarcarlina is Darren Horn will likely accept the offer to become the new Gamecocks head coach.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Well, Bennet says he hasn’t had one conversation with IU. Guess matt’s wrong.

Best hire would be Baylor’s coach, Scott Drew. Strong Indiana connection and if you can revive basketball at Baylor, he may be able to walk on water.

Why would IU offer Pearl? Stallings would be a much better choice. For reasons known only to God some UK fans think Pearl is Rupp, Wooden, Knight all rolled into one. He’s a clown and if you think he’s a great coach you obviously missed their games with UL, Butler, Miss St, Vandy and even the UK game in Knoxville.

I read the same article that IU has not offered to anyone. I think Pearl would be a great candidate. He can recruit, and more importantly, he is likely to accept. I think if he gets the job he can charm Sampson’s recruits to re-commit. I agree with 7 that he is not Rupp, Wooden or Knight, but the guy is full of energy and would keep IU relevant.

Some of you know RR over on TCP and his info is legit. Pearl is NOT AN OPTION. Give it up. Mike Montgomery is the guy IU wants … if it can’t have Bennett. Those are the top 2 candidates. Bottom line.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
And yes, this article is wrong. Bennett has NOT been offered the job.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Just to clarify, Matt Jones isn’t wrong, Goodman from FoxSports is wrong. Matt is just reporting from what he thought was a credible source.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
WRONG GET YOUR SOURCES CORRECT BEFORE YOU POST THIS MATT…. IU hasn’t offer anyone the job..
March 29th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
I realize it was Goodman who was wrong. Should bold the PER JEFF GOODMAN part as well.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
my sources say matt is correct…expect the announcement tomorrow.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
10,easy with the caps bro. Don’t want someone’s feelings getting hurt.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Still w/out real confirmation this probably should not have been reported! Un-responsible journalism!
March 29th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Yeah Matt…how dare you try and inform us what is going on around college basketball! what were you thinking??
March 29th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
i have heard something interesting and different, Scott Skiles. apparently he lives in bloomington. i think he would be an amazing choice and he wouldn’t have to deal with the nba players not wanting to be coached…i think he would be an amazing choice.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Its not unusual….. (in my best Tony B voice–isn’t that one of his songs?!?!) for Goodman to be wrong.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
#9, if you believe anything that moron Rupps Runts has to say (assuming you can even read his barely written in English posts) then we need to talk about some real good investment opportunities I have. Trust me, there is not a single person that frequents that board that knows anything about anything related to UK sports. Next thing you know you will be telling us about the latest pearl of wisdom from “The Professor.”
March 29th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
#20. Different RR that you are thinking of I think. The other RR, won’t say his true ID, has airtight ties in the IU program. He reported everything that happened with the whole IU situation a couple of hours before it happened and it was spot on info. His info is VERY reliable.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
“unresponsible?” That is hilarious!!!!! I can tell you went to a fine journalism school #16.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
This is rather birdesque… Changing posts without putting “edited”… Pretty weak stuff… Matt tried to act as if he had a source, then when its wrong he blames it on foxsposrts…
March 29th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
This is a blog not a Tipton news article … Matt can post any report he wants so get off his back for reporting what’s out there. I appreciate his telling us what he is hearing - saves me the trouble of looking elsewhere. Matt, keep the rumors and news comin’, I love it all.
March 29th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
It is good, but don’t try and act like you have scoop, then when its proven wrong blame it on somebody else…
All he had to do was put, “according to fox sports” in his first post
March 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Goodman is a f**King idiot, never believe anything he says.
March 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
#21, you are correct. When I read “rr” I immediately thought of the in-bred moron who posts under that name at Dynasty Defenders. I am aware of RR who posts at TCP and while I am not aware of his contacts I will trust you guys that he has good info regarding the IU situation. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
March 29th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
geez guys this is a free blog with great information, dont knock it….lol…..matt reports what he hears or is being reported elsewhere……if any of you heard it somewere you would have tried to be the first to tell us about it too……how can you complain about the content on a free page that is informative about things we coudlnt find elsewhere, or at least without looking hard?……crazy

Glad you caught the joke moron(#22)! It was a play on words, like Clemons at the congressional hearing! A real joke! A stab @ Matt! HAHA!
