A Tough Night of News

by @ 7:47 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Putting in a late night at the law firm, so gotta make it quick. I will have more in our late night post. As I alluded to on the show tonight, the news about Alex Legion is tough for the program. Alex is a top talent and one that would have been a HUGE contributor over the next few years. It could be the case that there is still time to have a change of heart, but at this point we dont know. However the events seemed to take place in this manner.

On Friday, there was a meeting between Legion, his mother and Coach Gillispie in which the possibility of a transfer was mentioned. I was told of this on Friday by a source close to the team, but the individual said that he “thought they worked it out” and everything would be fine. Then we go to Saturday, where Legion does not play well and Alex’s mother was very vocal in her criticism of the Coach and how he was using her son. I walked around the lower press area twice and heard her both times and was told by another press member that she kept it up the whole game. Then apparently Legion didnt come to practice today, and we are in our current situation.

The reason for this move has less to do about playing time than it does about the relationship between the Coach and the player. There are multiple members of this team that arent happy with the way the Coach operates and are considering a transfer. Add to that the fact that many of the parents, including one in particular, are quite vocal in wanting a change in the way that Billy Clyde operates and his coaching style. I was told by one player’s family member before the Legion news to expect “at least 2″ to be gone by the end of the semester. I was surprised however that it was Legion who was the first, as he is Billy Clyde’s guy and did not have the issue of an adjustment from one style to another.

Utlimately I think the program will be ok, but there are some issues at this point. I will have more later in the night, but for now, not a good night for UK basketball. But they always say that the night is always darkest right before dawn…..

  1. Scotland Says:

A friend of mine’s son played for Gillispie (as an assistant) at Illinois. I’m not surprised that player(s) may leave. But those who stay will be much better for it.

  2. IkeDaddyUK Says:

I was just thinking about Acie Law telling a story about another player on A&M’s team last year looking at him during conditioning and saying “I don’t want to play basketball any more.” Guess we might have a few guys thinking the same thing a bit further into the season.
It’s rough, but I wonder how much the guys from the previous regime are wanting out. It would make the most sense.

  3. BobS Says:

If you are going to post this “rumor” or observation
then name names. All you are doing is fueling speculation and
people will be making up names. Name the players and let’s see
    if your story sticks.

  4. ukcatfan88 Says:

If freakin Bobby Knight can find players that will play for him….Geez. Are these guys just head cases or what??

  5. JacobAdamBrooks Says:

Don’t make me go all ape@%#$%! on you guys for specualting!

  6. MrBlueHead Says:

    Bye-Bye Birdy Bye-Bye.

  7. JacobAdamBrooks Says:

    speculating that is

  8. roseysdaddy Says:

yeah, seriously. much better to name the names now then to open a wide open guessing game….since you brought it up.

  9. jughead07 Says:

Being a coach myself, I will defend the Billy G. by saying that Legion obviously isn’t getting it done in practice. The minutes he has played this season have been sparse because it looks as if he isn’t always in the right position to deny and help in man to man. Offensively he has a ton of upside but at what cost on the defensive end. Coach Billy G is all about tough half court man to man. I am gonna say that Legion hasn’t gotten over the star in high transition to college basketball that kids have to endure. His bad habits on defense were probably overshadowed by offense in high school. I wish the kid the best but I truly believe that D. Miller is a overall better player right now and maybe this paves the way for Hopson.

  10. chandrathan Says:

Hmm…unfortunately it’s starting to look like I was right about the hiring of Billy G. all along…

Pelphrey would have been a much better choice.

  11. PatPattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

if i recall correctly, players weren’t too fond of TCFEBUK and rock oliver those first few months….but that sure as hell paid off eventually

  12. GoCats Says:

i know i do not have this experience but what were these guys expecting?? la la la, lets shoot a few before class and then saturday we will play a game? it aint easy boys.

  13. JacobAdamBrooks Says:

Since no one has said it yet….

    1st

  14. IkeDaddyUK Says:

Yes, Pelphrey would never have had kids ever transfer.

  15. 10, 2, and 4 Says:

She oughta know you don’t get away with yelling in lowers.

  16. IkeDaddyUK Says:

I hate seeing any kid leave UK, but as an athlete that transferred, I can totally understand looking for a fresh start because things haven’t worked out the way you’d hoped.

  17. Atticus Says:

14… I hope that was your toungue firmly planted in your cheek.

  18. Robshairgel Says:

Coach G is bringing back the glory days of Coach Aldoph Rupp.If you cant stand the heat, get the hell out the kitchen!!!

  19. E-ROCK Says:

    11-who is TCFEBUK

  20. IkeDaddyUK Says:

17…I forget sometimes that sarcasm doesn’t print well. Planted so firmly in my cheek I nearly poked a hole in my face.

  21. PatPattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

The Coach Formerly Employed By UK

  22. GoCats Says:

my positive thinking skills would like me to believe that Hopson has something to do with this. it is amazing how stressed we were about having too many guards and now we might getting scherbenske into the rotation!

  23. BluesMan Says:

I like how some of you blame the coach for a player not being able to stand up to the rigor that is required to turn this thing around. I hope he comes back, but its ridiculous to treat this as some indictment of the coach. If some of the other players had decided to transfer, you’d all be patting him on the back for separating the men from the boys.

  24. GoCats Says:

#23 I agree with you, I do not blame the coach and i guarantee if it had been porter or carter, everyone on this site would be cheering

  25. Scotland Says:

#19 in the context it was used TCFEBUK = Pitino.

  26. PatPattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

    25) hey, we agree on something! haha

  27. playerjoe1414 Says:

#23 I couldn’t agree more, if legion can’t stand the heat then i don’t want him on UK if he isn’t willing to sweat the blood and tears then why should he be playing for UK, UK is tradition you should know when coming to play for UK each day you will work hard to be the best, if you are not willing to put in the time then go back home to your mommy, and play for Michigan.

  28. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

yeah, so just so everybody knows, PPatsweedman is posting under my name and making homosexual remarks and swearing… please recognize that this is not me, and I thought we were past this kind of behavior on here…

I hope most of you do not accept people doing this on here so that we could at least try to keep this blog fun and not some place where people can attack other posters with slurs and prejudice remarks…

talk to you guys later, lets keep our fingers crossed that this all calms down and Legion realizes that his best option is to tough it out here at UK…

  29. Al Purnell here Says:

Let’s be real. Patterson, Meeks, Jasper are the future of Kentucky basketball besides Crawford and Bradley. The rest of the talent is well uhhhh you know………

  30. KyBub Says:

Anyone who plays Michael Porter over Alex Legion is nuts to begin with and I don’t care what happens in practice. When Gillispie inserted Legion into our lineup vs UNC, UK immediately got better and quickly to boot. I like Porter but I like Legion’s game a lot more and we need him to come back. Coach G’s ego will end up killing UK.

  31. 3 fan Says:

Sorry, CBC, you have to damn well play your talent. I’d be sick and tired of sitting watching other PG’s play 28 minutes scoring 3 points and for the year have more turnover’s than points and assists combined.

  32. GregJ Says:

I think these posts are a little unfounded since we don’t know exactly what’s going on and I’d say it’s early to report him GONE, but hey what do I know.

  33. benherewaiting Says:

This is not a good nite for Kentucky basketball but a little common sense has to be used here. First of all We all know how talented Alex is. We also know how competitve in nature that BCG is, and how he hates to lose. Saying that dont you think that if Alex was doing everything his heart and mind has to do to get the playing time that BCG would not play him more? Its like not letting Crawford start starting the season. Do you think that BCG did not know from day one that he needed Joe? YOUR DAMN STRAIGHT HE DID. Alex should keep the course and come SEC time he would be on the court playing minutes like he wants.. Lets hope this kid does not throw away a career for the BIG BLUE, more for him than us.

  34. Mr. Boombastic Fantastic Lover Says:

On the Scout free board there was a post that said the 4 players considering a transfer were:

    Williams
    Carter
    Stewart
and a name he wouldnt name but made it sound like Patterson

I dont know where he got that info, or if he pulled out of his ass or what. If only the first 2 leave I will be on 4th street and the drinks will be on me all weekend.

I would say IF the last 2 are considering a transfer (and I kinda doubt it with Patterson) it is probably pretty typical for a freshman at this point in the year, especially with a coach that makes you work as hard as Gillispie. I kinda doubt it with Patterson, and for all I know the poster who posted it is full of it.

  35. PatPattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

I really hope, for legion’s sake, that he and his family realize that this is not wise. cutting ties with two well-respected programs is asking for a leading role in a directional school. he’s got talent, thats for sure, but is in no way ready for the league; he needs a top coach to help get him to that point, and i’m not sure any of them are willing to risk their teams’ chemistry on a kid that has been so skiddish about committing to something.

i hope, wherever he ends up, he’s successful. and i really hope that it’s at kentucky.

  36. KCKUKFan Says:

Matt’s completely right. We need to let Coach implement his system and leave it at that. It might not be pretty this year, but he will win here. And win big. And he’s not the kind of person to let a few transfers and fans muttering deter him from that.

  37. Mr. Boombastic Fantastic Lover Says:

In case you were wondering I kinda doubt it with Patterson, lol. This typing off the side of the screen kinda messes with me. Is there anyway to fix that other than just pressing enter to go to the next line instead of typing?

  38. KyBub Says:

Billary Clinton’s going to be the next President so I say we bring in Pat Summit. JUST KIDDING!!!!!

  39. clubmaker205 Says:

Tubby had kids who didn’t want to follow the rules. He caved and look what it got him!

  40. Al Purnell here Says:

Pat Summit is single now, Right?

  41. Mr Schwump Says:

Can’t let the inmates run the asylum.

  42. wstewart03 Says:

Well screw him and his large handed mother. If anyone else saw her, you must have noticed how giant her hands are. Its freakish

  43. MonstaMash93 Says:

This is a huge loss, Alex has the chance to be a star at UK. I called it during the UNC game. I said I wouldn’t blame this kid if he tranfered. Part of coaching is getting 100% out of your players and maybe coach has a problem with motivation. I have been a supporter since BCG got here, but this is his guy. Watching the game it is so evident that Alex is 2 times the player Porter ever thought about. When Alex was on the court it looked like he was playing hard. It looked to me like he was playing harder than some other guys on the floor. If Porter can have more turnovers than points his defense can’t be that much better than Alex.

  44. MonstaMash93 Says:

Alex seems like a great kid, but he feels like he is getting the shaft and I don’t blame him.

  45. Who’s Shaking the Big Blue Dust From Their Feet? at Fire Billy? Says:

[...] sure you’ve read the report about Alex Legion possibly leaving the Wildcats. Of course, Coach Gillispie now has to find [...]

  46. YankeeCpt Says:

I am heart broke. Had high expectations for Legion. Maybe he is pulling a Crawford… hopefully.

  47. Robshairgel Says:

    http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/blog.html

  48. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

This is not over. Legion will almost certainly have a sit down with BCG tonight and they will probably work out the difference. I’ve been saying all day that I think Legion’s lack of PT is almost solely based on his lack of defensive ability… BCG has been saying from day 1 that you have to play defense on his team or you won’t play, but right now Legion is really behind on D. He’s just not very good at it.. its nothis fault and I’m sure he’s trying, he just needs time to improve. Porter is a turnover machine, but he is not lost on defense. Porter is not a great defender, but he is not lost. We all know that Legion is 2 or 3 times better than Porter, and I ‘m sure BCG knows that as well… as soon as Legion can get in the game and play within the defense with out actually being a liability, his minutes will will increase big time.

His mom wants him to transfer because she wants her boy to be the star. That is a very selfish thing to do on her part and if Alex is smart, he’ll let his mother know that this is his decision… if he keeps letting her make decisions for him then he’s really headed in the wrong direction. He’s 19 years old. Council with your parents is one thing, but if they’re still pulling your strings then thats a problem.

He’s still getting minutes, and he’s averaging over 6 a game… I hope Crawford and Bradley talk to him and tell him about how they were in teh same boat as freshman (especially Crawford) I honestly don’t believe that Legion leaves at this point. BCG will talk to him and the fact that he will be held to the same standards as any other transfer will mean he has to sit out a year and that will be much more hazardous to his future then not playing as much as his mom would like when we play UNC

  49. yellowshirt11 Says:

It’s obvious to me that throughout the season there have been ego clashes. You’ve got star freshman coming in and it looks as though Coach Gillispie is putting them in their place. Since he is the head coach I would say that is his job. Gillispie is all about playing the guys who show they want to play in practice and I don’t see how he could get any respect if he was any other way.

  50. j-mo Says:

Bottom line is right now, we lost a walk on that was getting playing time (unheard of) and now a guy BCG made a huge deal about recruiting. If this is your guy you try and make it work for at least a semester. In the end this is going to look bad for future recruits.

He’s making it hard for me not to want to give up on him. However, maybe he’s just that demanding and he will get everyone into shape. I just hope Meeks isn’t the other one to leave. I find it odd he played with and injury for two games then BCG says he can’t walk and might be gone for the year!

  51. Wednesday Says:

Anyone want to start laying bets on who the next transfer will be?

I’ve only got three players on this team that it would kill me to see leave and I really hope it isn’t one of them. Two of the guys are injured. One hasn’t played in a game yet in ‘07 so he wouldn’t even have to sit out a year. The other only played in two and could start after Christmas next year somewhere. The third could go to the NBA.

  52. David Shelton Says:

    Refuse to let him transfer.
Make him sit out a year. I’m
    talking about Legion and
    Patterson

  53. GoCats Says:

#47 great news for a change! thanks for the pick-me-up. K.C. Roos Miller 41 points and they lost??

  54. benherewaiting Says:

Patterson? What would PP have to gain by transfering or just sitting out and going to the NBA…. Thats a joke.. Not going to happen

  55. blues77 Says:

After looking at each game Legion has played in I think his major probem is buying into the coach or he is too tough because despote Saturday he had played in double digit minutes each game
    17
    14
    31
    17
    20
    saturday 6..

but before saturday legion and his mother had a sit down with the coach voicing displeasures..this tells me this was more than playing time…i hope coach gillespie is not a bob huggins..i liked to think he is not like him. i lived in northern kentucky and i hated his coaching style..i hated how he cussed and scolded at them in an intense manner..
On the flip side I thought Pitino was intense and tough on his players.

but maybe legion was looking in the future and thought when meeks and legion comes back from injury that his time would be limited..but from what i am hearing coach g is very demanding and tough….
not every kid is for coach g or any other coach for that matter…his teaching and coaching is not for everyom.he has to find those kids that can learn in his system.

  56. Scotland Says:

Coach Huggins players (mostly) really like him. Long after he coach them. A few don’t but most do.

  57. blues77 Says:

56..i do not want a huggins type coach..the man has no class..his program was laden with thugs..and he got fired because of his image..
i wanna win but not with a classless style like huggins..i am glad we are not IU and say our great coach was a redneck asshole.

  58. blues77 Says:

plus i do think huggins was a great coach..went to the tourney every year but only went to one final four and past the sweet 16 twice in his long tenure at UC.

    he emphasized defense.but overall he was a not a great x’s and o’s coach…

  59. TheGuyPitinoForgotToPutOnTheGuyThrowingTheBallInBounds Says:

#10 chandrathan - If anyone thinks that Rick Pitino or Travis Ford or Billy Donovan or John Pelphrey doesn’t push their kids in practice boot camp style just as hard as Billy Gillispie then your joking yourself.

They do it and still get recruits who stay. It’s just a simple matter of finding the right kids. Nothing against Alex, but she isn’t helping him grow up and be a man if she’s gonna keep getting in his damn way.

  60. Wednesday Says:

All the freaking out aside I was really suprised when no one transferred at the beginning of the year. I figured a few people would bolt. I guess it’s just happening later rather than sooner.

If meeks leave I wouldn’t be suprised to see him at UGA.

  61. Therealboogdog5 Says:

Its offical legion gone http://www.ukathletics.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=37&url_article_ id=20345&change_well_id=2

  62. Scotland Says:

#57 all of that may be so but Huggins’ PLAYERS (most, not all) really like him a lot.

  63. TheSportsAnimal Says:

This is an absolute shame and there isn’t anything else that should be said.

People ALWAYS think that the grass is greener on the other side. Change is not always good, change for the sake of change really isn’t a good idea. Certain people wanted Tubby Smith out of Lexington and now they get BCG and he can’t keep people happy.

This hasn’t been a grand slam beginning to a new era in UK basketball for BCG. I hope things clear up and work themselves out, but I don’t know if it will be anytime soon.

  64. IkeDaddyUK Says:

It’s disappointing to me that his mother couldn’t show enough maturity to keep her mouth shut during the game. Best of luck, Alex.

  65. TBoogie Says:

Eric Gordon bruised his back and left the IU/Tenn St. game after only 8 minutes tonight. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll sit out Saturday too.

Maybe not, given our string of luck so far this year.

  66. flipisatrip Says:

Naysayers please don’t jump back on the bandwagon in couple years. Go cheer for pitino, we don’t need your negativity right now…

  67. flipisatrip Says:

Naysayers please don’t jump back on the bandwagon in couple years. Go cheer for pitino, we don’t need your negativity right now…

  68. Herb420 Says:

Hey im a new poster but long reader and from what I heard the story happened as follows. There was a meeting that took place and it was discussed that he may transfer. Then Sat. morning there was a fight between CBC and Legion. This led to his loss of PT in the game. After the game there was mumblings about a transfer, but the final thing happened at a conditioning session in which Legion got upset and bailed.

  69. GoCats Says:

#67 im with you. I always support UK and our crazy fans but if these people are ready to jump ship they better not come back. during our back to back final four years in 2010, 2011, these will be the fans saying i was right behind gillispie from the beginning!

  70. dudewheresmygillispie Says:

There was a lot of speculation that UK would lose a few players on the transition. If I am not mistaken this has happened everywhere BCG has gone. The only shock is it was Legion and not an existing player. It wouldn’t shock me if we lost a couple more. If we do, so be it. Legion was out of defensive position multiple times on Saturday. He was struggling to get back to defend wide open 3’s and a couple times BCG was letting him have it at the time out. If he can’t take it too bad. There won’t be any scholly limitations next year.

  71. lesmiles Says:

    wonder where legion is headed?

  72. jbrady630 Says:

im guessing he goes somewhere like umass, gonzaga, or some other decent team who plays no defense but shoots the 3 a lot and places at a fast pace

  73. jbrady630 Says:

    plays

  74. ukbandman Says:

we survived the loss of Dwight Anderson, Marvin Stone, Rekalin Sims, Chris Mills, and others. Sad to see Legion go but I’m not ready to condemn coach wihtout knowing the facts.

Many high school stars struggle in the transition to college and then blame the coach.

I’m more concerned that CBC and UK couldn’t reach contractual terms. While a letter of understanding can be the basis of a binding contract, usually the terms are fleshed out and memorialized in a more detailed written agreement. CBC is a highly paid employee and I doubt the sticking points were $ or term of the contract. Hard to imagine what could keep UK and coach from reaching a full agreement. I hope there’s not some underlying problem in the relationship that will cause trouble down the road.

  75. lobstersky Says:

as the crowd said on sat. when Legion was pulled out of the game…booooooooo!!!

  76. LeBowlingAlley Says:

we all knew we’d be in for a tough few years. let’s everybody just remain calm and support the Cats and everyone involved. at the end of the day, we will still be The Kentucky Wildcats. There’s a lot of history to proud of, but barring WWIII or any other meltdown of our country, there will be college basketball for a long, long time and many opportunities to prove our superiority. BCG obviously has some recruiting prowess that OTS didn’t have, and since OTS’s ability at X’s and O’s didn’t produce results, let’s see what BCG’s recruits can do. Relax and be patient. Everything will be alright.

  77. Dragonophile Says:

PP is not likely to go anywhere, but Meeks is less certain.

  78. VinDatuk Says:

Shouldn’t his mother have seen this coming being a prophet and all…

    http://www.kentucky.com/158/story/189453.html

  79. shamsway Says:

Not my find, but here are some past examples of Alex’s wonderful attitude…

    http://www.mlive.com/weblogs/print.ssf?/mtlogs/mlive_wolverines/archiv es/print119109.html

  80. lesmiles Says:

Legion’s presence thus far on the court didn’t really impress me but i’ll agree that he’s MUCH better than Porter and watching porter play is like Saul Smith all over again, except that Porter hasn’t launched a low orbit bottle rocket into the crowd yet.

  81. MeeksIsTheMan Says:

I can tell you who I’ve heard the other 3 possible transfers are, but let me stress that I have no idea if this news has any validity to it, so please take it with a grain of salt. I was told it was Jared Carter, Ramon Harris and AJ Stewart. But that at this point, they were just considering it…

There’s no way Patterson would transfer, I’m doubting Meeks would either….

  82. UKfan215 Says:

Obviously, Legion doesn’t have the toughness to be a successful player at this level. The fact he’s willing to just up and run away only 6 games into the season is proof of this.

Look, this kid has a history of being very indecisive. He made verbal committments what, 2 or 3 times? He transfered in high school. He’s had difficulty getting along with coaches in the past.

The kid has talent. But he doesn’t have the attitude, the drive or the work ethic. I hate to say it, but he’s just another Rashad Carruth and his mother is a headcase as well it appears. Let him go. Then hopefully we can bring in more kids like Patterson…..guys that also have talent, yet have a good attitude and are willing to give 110%.

  83. UKfan215 Says:

A.J. Stewart isn’t going anywhere. That kid hustles his butt off. He’ll be a very good player here in time. He’s just a little raw right now. But the athleticism and will is there. He’ll flourish under Gillispie.

  84. shamsway Says:

    78) I don’t know how I missed that gem. That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever read. I’m not going to disparage someone else’s religion, but… wtf.

  85. TheGuyPitinoForgotToPutOnTheGuyThrowingTheBallInBounds Says:

Hopefully Legion goes to Playland where he can dream of going to the NBA without having to pay the price.

If you can’t pay the price, don’t waste our time (or our scholarships).

  86. nathanrossnewman Says:

It’s official. Alex Legion is transferring from Kentucky. ukathletics.com has confirmed reports that Legion is leaving.

    http://ukathletics.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=37&url_article_id=2 1164&change_well_id=2

  87. MeeksIsTheMan Says:

I’d hate to see AJ Stewart go as well and agree that he will flourish under Gillispie, I’m just simply repeating what was told to me.

  88. ethan Says:

What I don’t understand is the Porter bashing. He might not score a lot of points, but at least he plays hard and more importantly gets the ball moving. He had 4 a to 2 to against North Carolina to go along with 4 boards. He did have a horrible game against Stony Brook with 5 to’s, but Bradley had the same in a dozen less minutes and at least Porter chipped in 4 a then as well. He’s the kind of guy you want on your team, so let’s take it a little easier on him.

  89. GoCats Says:

#79 very interesting. I guess this is definitely pattern.

  90. Ricky Bobby Says:

Wanh, wanh, whanh, My mommy says i should play more.

  91. lesmiles Says:

ethan: he’s just not very good. i appreciate the effort but he is the God of turnovers and isn’t a very good shot and can’t dribble the ball real well. i agree it’s good to have a player like him on your team to push the STARTERS but he isn’t starter quality.

  92. BluesMan Says:

88 - Sometimes, in sports, we expect guys with real talent to do everything and always succeed. We are disappointed when they don’t. Then there are guys with relatively little talent, but they work hard and hussle, and whatever miniscule contribution they do make is magnified 1 billion times in our mind. Such is the case with Michael Porter.

Probably a good kid. Appears to be a hard worker. But ultimately, his ceiling is pretty low.

  93. TheGuyPitinoForgotToPutOnTheGuyThrowingTheBallInBounds Says:

Yea, lets quit bashing our players. Leave everyone but Bradley alone. And if Bradley will stop making triangles with his hands (I hucked this line from aseaofblue.com), you can stop picking on him too.

  94. lesmiles Says:

    92) exactly! couldn’t have said it better. very good effort but lets face it, his ability just isn’t there physically. In good shape, smart guy, great hustle…but when you put that on one side of the seesaw and his athleticism/skillset on the other side, umm, his effort really REALLY outweighs the other side ; )

  95. ethan Says:

I understand where you guys, 91 and 92, are coming from, but right now we don’t have too many options. Legion certainly couldn’t run the offense, and Porter doesn’t turn the ball over as much as you think (or I thought till I saw the #s). Assist to TO on the year is 14/9, and that’s with the 5 turnover Stony Brook game. You are right, we need more athletic starters than Porter, but I’m glad to have him now and just hate to see him made into the next Carrier.

  96. IkeDaddyUK Says:

Whenever I watch Porter, he seems to be thinking more than playing. Watching him shoot during the UNC game, it seemed as though there was a mental pause before he went up. I don’t know why it’s there, but I remember thinking the same thing about Barbour.
He works very, very hard, but until he gets that cleared and starts knocking things down consistently, he will be an offensive liability. I would say the same about Coury, though I cheer for both players for their “everyman” quality.

  97. lesmiles Says:

yea i agree, we don’t have much of an option now no doubt. we have what we have and it is what it is…it will be interesting when/if we find out who the “others” are in regards to thinking about leaving. i seriously doubt patterson is one but if he was well; forget this season..i mean honestly, if he were gone we would honestly be extremely screwed.

  98. TBoogie Says:

We lose patterson this year, we don’t win more than 12 games all season.

This ENTIRE post is crap by jones… He knows it too.

This all came from somebody within the program…

    A. Legion’s mom AND grandmother were at the meeting… Along with alex. The reason alex is transferring HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ALEX OR PROBLEMS WITH BCG’s style in practice etc…

IT HAS everything with hos mom and how CRAZY she is… Remember, she thinks she is a psychic… He didn’t want to transfer but his mom is making him…

Matt is taking bits of the story and is piecing it together to meet his agenda.

    B. Ther might be one or two others who might transfer. BUT once again, its about playing time not bcg… This is also more crap from jones.

    C. There are not “multiple players” unhappy with bcg’s style of practice or whatever ones is making up, I have no clue where he is getting this but it’s irresponsible at best, a complete lie at worst.

    D. The other thing that matt is dead wrong about is the status of meeks and jasper… They will both play this season and both will play by the conference schedule.

90 percent of this post by matt is dead wrong. We know why he is making this up…

Legion needs to read this & reconsider his decision. Acie Law’s
parents had the right answer & right attitude and look at where
he’s at now. 3* vs 5*~ Imagine what Gillispie could do with
Legion, if given the chance. Legion may not have the heart &
determination. Ego definitely plays a part & these newbies need
to learn there is a learning curve and that they are not the elite
talents they were against high school athletes (in most cases). He
needs to realize that eventually he will be a star of the team,
but not with the shooting he’s doing on the court right now. THIS
SUCKS ROYALLY, but I have faith in BCG. We need better guys on the
roster, guess transfers will open up some spots….Bring ‘em on.

    Country Day standout isn’t happy
Legion, a junior who is bound for Michigan, questions if team can take the title in Class B.
The Detroit News March 8, 2006
    Tom Markowski

BEVERLY HILLS — Player unrest continues to hamper Detroit Country Day’s basketball program this season.

Junior Alex Legion, one of the state’s top recruits, said this week playing for Country Day has never been fun. He also questioned whether his team has what it takes to win the Class B championship.

Legion’s AAU coach, Tim Green, said Legion’s unhappiness might spark a change of schools, possibly to Oak Hill Academy (Va.), at the end of this school year.

“We’ll keep our options open,” Green said.

Whether or not Legion transfers, he and Green, with whom Legion lives in Southfield, said Legion will honor the commitment he made to Michigan.

“As long as (Michigan coach) Tommy Amaker is there, Alex is going there,” Green said.

Said Legion: “No matter if I stay at Country Day or leave, I’ll stay committed.”

Country Day (16-4), ranked No. 3, opens tournament play at 6 tonight against Madison Heights Madison at Warren Fitzgerald.

On Jan. 30, Country Day coach Kurt Keener suspended senior forward Omar Thomas.

Keener said it wasn’t what Thomas did on the court that led to his dismissal. It was Thomas’ actions off-the-court actions that caused Keener to suspend him.

Thomas has since apologized and returned to the team, according to Keener, but only as a practice player. He does not dress for a games. Keener is unsure whether Thomas will play again.

Thomas is a 6-foot-6 forward who signed a letter-of-intent with Western Carolina. Keener said Western Carolina coach Larry Hunter has since made a trip to Country Day to meet with Thomas and re-affirmed the school will honor the letter-of-intent as long as Thomas meets his academic requirements.

Legion, a 6-4 guard-forward, along with 6-9 senior twins Charles and Philip Tabet, 6-10 senior Keith Benson and 6-5 junior Darryl Nobles are being recruited by Division I schools.

Legion is averaging 18 points, six rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals. Legion said he’s not involved in the offense enough.

“No, it’s not fun,” he said.

“If you didn’t know much about Country Day and you came to watch us play you wouldn’t know I was their best player.

“I don’t think I should come down and shoot every trip down the court. But the offense should go through me where I could get everyone like Darnell (Brown, a sophomore guard) and Charles into position where they could get open looks.

“I am disgruntled. I do believe it can be solved. It’s up to the person in charge. It will affect our tournament run. The districts and regionals will be somewhat easy for us but when we play a good team like (Detroit) Renaissance who have a player like Tajuan Porter who create shots for himself, we’ll have trouble with them.

“I don’t think we can beat Renaissance. We should beat Renaissance on paper. Our team continuity isn’t there. We’ve had team meetings. Coach Keener took a day and redefined players’ roles.

“It can be corrected. It’s not too late.”

When reached Tuesday, Keener declined to comment on the remarks by Green and Legion.

Green, an assistant principal at Allen Academy Middle School in Detroit, is a close friend of Legion’s family, including his mother, Annette Williams, who lives in Inkster.

Williams is the sole guardian of her son, but Green is in the process of applying for dual guardianship.

“We don’t want to leave (Country Day),” Green said. “But it might be in Alex’s best interest to leave.”

    Today’s top district semifinals

    Class A

    Wyandotte Roosevelt vs. Taylor Truman

    Tip-off: 5:30 p.m. at Southgate Anderson

Records: Wyandotte is 14-6, Truman 18-3

Outlook: Wyandotte eliminated Truman last season and went on to win the district title. Truman has defeated quality teams this season, including Belleville, but Wyandotte has been the Cougars’ nemesis in tournament play recently. Wyandotte’s Ryan Rochester is a slick ball-handler and look for Truman to pressure Rochester to get the ball out of his hands. Truman by 4 .

Birmingham Brother Rice vs. Pontiac Northern

    Tip-off: 6 p.m. at Auburn Hills Avondale

Records: Brother Rice is 12-8, Northern is 14-7.

Outlook: On the surface this doesn’t appear to be a close game, but Northern could overlook a young Brother Rice team for a possible matchup with Pontiac Central in the final. Brother Rice might opt for a slower pace in an attempt to shorten the game and perhaps cause Northern to be a bit impatient offensively. Northern by 7 .

    Class B

    Riverview vs. Dearborn Heights Robichaud

    Tip-off: 7:30 p.m. at Ypsilanti Willow Run

Records: Riverview is 17-3, Robichaud 12-8

Outlook: Riverview, champion of the Huron League, will have its hands full against a team that played better in the second half of the season. Point guard Ven Russell promises to be a difficult matchup for Riverview. It should be interesting to see if Robichaud coach Vernon Crump decides to go with Russell defending Riverview’s top scorer, Alex Strok, and risk subjecting Russell to foul trouble. Robichaud by 2 .

    Class C

    Detroit Community vs. Inkster

Tip-off: 6 p.m. at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard

Records: Community is 15-5, Inkster 13-7.

Outlook: This is Community’s first big test in its quest for a state title. Inkster’s best players are sophomores — Alfonso Lewis and Antonio Green — so inexperience could be a factor. Community has a number of seniors, and having reached the quarterfinals last season, the Hurricanes are ready. Community by 8 .

Legion has not showed me much in the games he has played. the only game he looked good in was GW and we lost.
he may be great in the future but I don’t think we’ll really miss him in the short term.

and secondly, AJ Stewart is not transferring.

Theres a second article from The Detroit News from July,19 2006 about Legion and his ways (Notice the title)…

    Legion recommits to U-M

Former Country Day star says relationship with Amaker, Harris signing led to choice.
The Detroit News July 19, 2006

    Eric Lacy and Tom Markowski

One of the state’s top high school basketball players recommitted to Michigan on Tuesday afternoon and said he will sign a national letter with the Wolverines in November.
Alex Legion, 18, formerly of Detroit Country Day, said his bond with coach Tommy Amaker is the reason he decided to attend Michigan.

Legion, a 6-foot-5 swingman, changed his mind about committing to Michigan last April because he wanted to explore other college options. He also decided to attend Oak Hill (Va.) Academy for his senior season after averaging 25 points, six rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.5 assists a game last season at Country Day.

Despite the changes, Legion kept in touch with Amaker and was impressed with what he said in phone conversations.

Legion described his relationship with Amaker as “better than with any other coach in the country.”

“Coach Amaker called about once a month and always talked about how he was never going to give up on me,” Legion said. “The vision he has for me and his program fit well. He wants to revive U of M basketball and believes I can help him do that. That’s the greatest compliment a player can get from a coach.”

Legion was ranked No. 6 in The Detroit News’ preseason top 25, the highest of any junior. He was named first-team Class B All-State for the past two seasons.

“I’ve always liked Michigan,” he said. “I just needed some time to think. I wanted to make sure it was a decision I was comfortable with. I was confused before to the point where everyone was giving their two cents worth. So I decided to re-open it and start from scratch. That’s why I want to go to Oak Hill, so I could make decisions on my own.”

On March 8, in a Detroit News story, Legion said he was considering a transfer to Oak Hill, but that he would remain committed to U-M. In that report Legion said, “It’s not fun (to play at Country Day),” he said. “I am disgruntled.”

Shortly after Country Day ended its season with a loss to Detroit Renaissance in a Class B quarterfinal, Legion made his decision to transfer to Oak Hill.

Since that time Legion talked with a number of coaches from schools such as UCLA, Arizona, Notre Dame and Kansas. He never visited any schools.

Legion said one of the big factors, other than Amaker, in him deciding on Michigan was the recent commitment to U-M made by Corperryale Harris of Detroit Redford.

“That had a big role in me going there,” Legion said of Harris. “With him committing to U-M, it made my decision easier.”

Legion will start school at Oak Hill on Sept. 1. But he doesn’t believe playing for the athletic power and the media attention it receives will make him want to change his future plans.

“I think that phase of my life is over,” Legion said. “I want to move on with my decision.”

  114. humboldtmc7 Says:

The reason Tubby would never let this happen is because he never recruited players to leave! if this bible thumping momma boy wants to leave, then I hope the door hits him in the A$$, peace! It’s going to take BCG a couple years to weed out all the soft players TS had playing and too finally grow the backbone of UK pride once again. lastly if there are any other players are contemplating to transfer, please don’t waste our time, the door is open LEAVE!
