Today is the day of reckoning. On the last day of the Signing period, Patrick Patterson is ready to make his announcement public to the world. At 3:45 on Wednesday, at HHS, Patterson will unveil his college choice to the world and watch as the audience of internet recruiting fans everywhere (95% of whom are UK fans) find out where he will be manning the paint next season. There has been so much talk of Patrick Patterson on this blog over the last year and a half, that you likely could fill a small novel with its details (hmmmm a money making idea?) And now it all comes to an end. It many ways, Patrick Patterson (even more so than Jai Lucas) made this blog and tomorrow will be the turning of a page.
I must admit…..a few weeks ago I thought Kentucky had no chance. But now…..well, things may have changed. It is clear that Billy Gillispie made an amazing impression on the Patterson family, and Patrick in particular with his recruiting pitches and Kentucky is now totally in the mix. Patrick told the Huntington Herald (in an article linked in the post below) that he had it narrowed down to two schools and then went back and forth. Was Kentucky one of those schools? A lot of late speculation seems to suggest yes. Patrick’s quotes in that article, if read in a sympathetic UK light, seem to give hope to Cats fans. The most interesting comment to me was his statement that he didnt want to say what factors made the decision because “then you will know what school it is.” Think about that…..if you were trying to distinguish the schools, Kentucky does have more distinguishing factors. The selling point for Florida is a great coach, a great school and playing time…..well UK has all three as well. But UK is also close to home and has a huge fan base…..distinguishing factors. Duke has a distinguishing factor of academics (so that may have been the comment), but when read with a sympathetic UK eye, that comment might seem to foreshadow good news for UK fans.
Either way, tomorrow is a day Kentucky fans have anticipated for some time. ANd it is going to be a swamp of a day here on the blog. Here is what we have for you…..we will be live from the Huntington press conference via a combination of cell phone and audio feed from a sister affiliate. Then IF Patrick Patterson commits to Kentucky, he will come on the Sports Mob sometime in the 5 o clock hour. I expect this site to be swamped tomorrow and possibly down occasionally. Know that we will give you news as it comes, but IF Patterson commits you may have to go directly to 1570 The Zone’s webpage to hear the post-game interview.
Regardless of what happens tomorrow, tip one back for the Patterson recruitment…..its been a long ride as the recruit whose decision-making process may have been followed here more closely than any basketball recruiting saga ever comes to end.

If he signs with UK, I think the tipping factor would be that Lexington was closer to home, coupled with the close relationship with his parents.

Seriously, Matt, on the ‘money making’ idea…if Pat becomes a huge star, or sets a precedent for holding out to the last day (bolstered if Billy D does bolt for the NBA), you probably could market a book chronicling his recruiting process and using your blog posts and selected comments.
If you ever got serious about this, you would of course have to talk to someone at UK like Bell, but like I said, if Pat becomes a star, there’d be a market for it.
And if Pat said he’d come on the show if he’s coming to UK, that sounds good to me for our chances.

Matt, Thanks for the update. I am not sure how to feel about what you wrote. Over the past few years we have had many expectations shot down at the last minute so I am trying not to read too much into what you wrote. Maybe I’m still Tubberized!? The Gillispie therapy seems to be working and I am sure it will heal me over the next year or so.

Well, at least if PP signs with FL, there aren’t 2 other recruits stating they are going elsewhere within the same hour tomorrow! lol Maybe it won’t be such a hard blow if he chooses another school over us. Funny how its down to 2 of our least favorite rivals (FL, Duke– not U of L). I hope at this time tomorrow night I’m giddy as a schoolgirl & not freaking pissed off like I was last night!

Maybe PP was waiting to see where Jai went before he made up his mind. Perhaps his intentions were to go somewhere other than Jai’s school. I guess we’ll know this time tomorrow. The suspense is KILLING ME! I’m getting so impatient!

Anyways, a source I have close to the program says that Patterson to UK, for lack of a better term, is a done deal. This same guy told me three days before it happened that Billy G was going to be head coach, but I didn’t post it because I was hell bent that it was going to be Billy D. So, there is some credibility here.
However, considering the heartache we’ve gone through for the last 3-4 years, I’ll say he’s going to Florida, just so I don’t get my hopes up.

I had a deciding factor when I chose from the three schools I was accepted to.
Ohio University, Ohio State, and UK. My deciding factor was free basketball
tickets for as long as I am a student(i know they are not free now but they
used to be). I chose the greatest basketball school in the world and had
the greatest time of my life!

Ok, so I was just trying to make a point……
I have ALWAYS said that I don’t know ANYTHING personally about Patrick Patterson.
HOWEVER, I will say this much……
A few weeks ago, I got the feel from some people close to UK that PP wasn’t looking too good.
Just a few minutes ago, that feeling changed. Do I think that means PP is coming to UK??? Hell, I have no idea.
Do I think that there is INTENTIONAL MISINFORMAION being put out? Yes, I certainly do.
I don’t think PP would have let Jai go to UF by himself. However, there are a LOT of people telling me that they think Kentucky is going to get PP…..it’s just hard for me to deal with that because it’s only the Kentucky people saying that. Still, they are saying it strongly.
My instincts tell me that UK isn’t the school, but what good are instincts…it’s not like I’m spiderman.
So, I guess what I’m saying is that I do acknowledge that there is a lot of heat coming out from UK about PP coming there…..And there is a ton of heat from UF about him coming there.
I have no idea which school ends up with him….I’ve been a UF thinker for a while, but I do hear more and more heat from the UK camp, so I guess that has to be taken into account…..
ONE THING I do know….I want PP to play for the Cats.

I must be missing something…I read PPat to say that “ALL ARE WELCOME” when referring to the fans showing up. I didn’t read anything about UK fans are welcome.
I also remember Legion saying (when he announced for UK) that he would be recruiting Patterson too.
From a pure logistics standpoint, the Patterson family will be able to get to UK and Duke much easier than FL. They wouldn’t have to move, transfer jobs, etc…They could remain near family, and it appears family is very important to them.
There are probably three people who know…And none of them are on this board.
Lucas we could recruit over. Sanchez and Hamgas were bigger losses for UK than Jai was. Now, we are at the point where we NEED Patterson, because there is no one else left.
I guess I officially back on the PPat wagon.

I live in the Ashland area and get Huntington news. They have said on WSAZ this morning that it is said throughout Huntington that Duke is the school he dropped. His decision is between Kentucky and Florida. It sounds as though we are looking good based on his comments about bringing all the fans that want to come (referring to KY fans).

Well my fellow blue crazies…I am afraid to hope after the way Monday went…so I won’t come back on here until whatever deal is done….is done. (Oh I still feel we are his best mix but the teens and their decisions are wearing me out). Sounds like he will either follow Jai or come here…..(redundant eh)

I find it hard to believe that he’d want UK fans (especially UK fans) at the announcement if he was choosing Florida BECAUSE he is having a hard enough time knowingly disappointing the two coaches of the schools he didn’t choose. He said in the article in the Herald Dispatch that he wasn’t going to call the two losing coaches because it was too hard after the bonds they’d made. So if that is too hard for him then WHY would he want to answer to many UK fans if he chooses Florida?!! He’s already had a taste these past few months of how serious we take KY basketball. I’d don’t believe he’d be that crazy. I feel pretty certain he’ll be putting on a UK hat today. If I’m wrong, oh well, just another disappointment. However, if I’m wrong it will be one of the last few disappointments because KY has nowhere to go but UP!! With a great leader!! GO CATS!!

It looks like he will be a wildcat, especially considering that mm (Marc Maggard) has predicted Florida. Has he ever gotten one of these correct? Look at Jai Lucas and Josh Carrier, the greatest practice shooter of all time. Looks like we have this one wrapped up.

Y’all are reading way too much into PP’s comment to let all the UK fans come to his presser. If he doesn’t want to disappoint anyone, why would he tell fans to stay away? He’s signing with UF, but if he tells UK fans not to come,then it is obvious he’s not signing with UK. So he has to say it the way he did, otherwise we’d know and be depressed (if just for a moment). Look, I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t feel it. The kid made a GATOR head in art class, folks. Why would he do that? Same as JL….Infatuated with Florida. UK is the best place for him, but he won’t realize that until it is too late.

It seems to me the major point of the comment about the fans was said by his coach who I believe hasn’t been told where he is going at least at the time of the statement. If I really tried to read into it I would say it sounds like the coach was talking with him about which school he believed would be the best for him. He probably didn’t give a definitive answer and mentioned after mentioning the goods and bads of playing for UK jokingly mentioned this.

Even if we don’t get Patterson, I think who we have left from last year has great potential. They should’ve been better last year, but they didn’t have a coach that had the ability to make them better. Neither was he a good MOTIVATOR. With the right coach our guys really have great potential. Billy G will not allow laziness. They will be what he expects or else — that is his attitude. I believe even though we’ll mostly have the same players next year that in a sense they will be a COMPLETELY different team. Crawford is okay and the reason I say that is he loses soooo many points by trying to get 3’s every trip down the floor (he’s way too much of a ball hog). Billy G will stop that and improve him. Bradley has SO much potential and Billy G has what it takes to get him there. I believe he(Bradley)and Meeks will be our two leaders next seaon in scoring. But there will definitely be HUGE improvement in all of the returning players. I think Tubby’s heart just wasn’t at KY and he really didn’t care. That showed and rubbed off on the players. Our teams have NOT seemed close and confident for a few years. That will also change this year. But for the Tubby fans (if there are any) — I do think he is a great man. Just not right stuff for KY basketball.

I may be jumping to conclusions but I don’t think I would be one of the 50 on the bus to Huntington if I thought for a minute Patterson was going to dissapppoint me by saying that he was going to go to Florida. Just look at the dissappointe people when Lucas said that he was going somewhere besides Kentucky. I just wouldn’t want to take that chance.
Could it possibly be that these people mentioned already know something that no one else knows?

“distinguishing factors”= Jai Lucas? I don’t believe this but MAtt’s distinguishing factors arguement does not hold much water with me. What makes me think he is coming are his remarks about how Lucas told him to go where it was best for him. That sounds like something he would only say if he knew PP was really wanting to go to UK. Also why would you metion that you wanted UK fans there if you were told they would need to be security there for your protection if you said Florida(Which is not true but he said it) unless you had a death wish or never wanted to visit the tri-state(KY, WV, OH) area again.
Plus you have to think that friends, family, and coaches have to be hoping UK. They would be able to go to games and stay in touch. He could come home more. THey are more likely to be UK fans already. But most important of all he loves the attention. If he put on a UK hat he will be loved for the reat of his life. He will not be able to go any where in the state or it’s surrounding area with out getting swarmed by adoring fans. In FL they may approach him to see if he knows Tim Tebo and ask if he could get them an an autograph. One thing is for sure. Were ever he goes he will be the only Dominant big man in next years UK UF game. It at the very least seams as though he wants us to believe he is coming to UK
Maybe he just realizes if UK fans don’t believe they have a shot at him he will hear crickets at his press confrence because UF fans don’t care. Let’s just hope he does not have some sick sense of humor.

Hard to believe, but I am really excited about the upcoming season. There’s a lot of buzz around the Cats this year. Offense looks solid. Hope the D can step up, especially the secondary.

I haven’t read all 187 posts, but all the workup about “distinguishing factors” is silly.
Come on, if he has a set of factors to explain which school he chose, then to speak them would logically have to reveal the school, no matter which of the three schools it is. Otherwise, they could not be the factors that helped him choose between the three. So, there is no way this little nothing-of-a-tidbit can help explain which school he has chosen. (Unless you want to argue that “there are no possible set of considerations, among an infinite possible number of considerations, that could make PP want to go to school X.” Of course, if that were true, then we would know he wasn’t going to school X even before he made the comment. ….but why am I wasting my time on this?

#188 I disagree .. He could say immediate playing time was the big factor but that would reveal nothing but I bet it is a factor .. He could say they have a great coach or a great program but that doesn’t point to just one .. all significant factors favor Kentucky IMO .. recruited him the longest, biggest/best fan base, closest to home .. these are the kind of things that are likely the factors and of course they do reveal a particularly school
He’s not going to say he chose Florida because they won the last two titles or because Jai chose Florida .. it would have to be more about the coach .. is BD better than Coach K?? And yet we highly suspect Duke was a distant third in this decision .. there’s no good reason to think Florida other than just the negative Karma of the recruiting failures of the last few years .. I say that those failures are over beginning today
