[Moderated by Matt Jones]

When I was trying to determine which famous individual’s birthday I would spotlight today, I found it to be a fairly difficult choice. For you see April 23rd has given us many of supreme talent. I considered William Shakespeare, only arguably the finest writer in the history of the English language. I considered Vladimir Nabokov, producer of the famous novel “Lolita”, and literature professor of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. And I even considered Roy Orbison, whose smooth sounds while singing “Pretty Woman” were only overshadowed by his later work as a member of the great Traveling Wilburies. With all of this talent, picking who to spotlight was not only difficult….it was trying on my soul.
But then I realized that today was also the birthday of fellow Middlesboro, Kentucky native Lee Majors, and well….the choice was made. Lee Majors, better known to you as the Six Million Dollar Man or the Fall Guy, is likely the most famous individual produced by the greatest Meteor crater in Appalachia. Growing up as a proud Yellow Jacket, we learned of the greatness of Lee Majors through his songs (”I’m Just an Average Stuntman….”), his women (oh yes, a pre-crazy Farrah Fawcett) and his television work (Fall Guy was my favorite). But he was also a living legend the day he arrived in our fair city to christen Bradner football Stadium with the name “Lee Majors Field.” It was a glorious day in Middlesboro as Majors showed up, waved to the crowd and gave a slightly too long kiss to the Homecoming Queen to the loud ovation of his adoring public. Majors has laid slightly low since those days and it is unclear what he is up to at this point. But he is a fellow man from the Boro and thus we use this day to salute him. At its core, Majors knows the eternal truth…..Kentucky will always be better than Tennessee, and the Jackets, Jackets will almighty work all day and all nighty gonna beat Corbin….oh yeah.
Great time at Thunder over Louisville…..full house there including the Turkey Hunter, Hubby, Quigs and the great Johnny Bruce. It was a great time and we saw more mullets and tattoos than one can ever hope to dream of seeing. Thanks to the folks who said hello, and sorry we missed the Spring Game….although it looks like everyone except about 5,000 of you did as well. Onto the news…..
(1) The end is drawing near for the long recruiting saga of the biggest little man in Texas, Jai Lucas. Lucas is scheduled to make his college intentions known on Friday. He will be joining the Sports Mob on Wednesday before his fateful decision. He told me this weekend that he planned on spending a “lot of time” talking to his dad on Monday and then coming to a decision by the end of the week. At this point, everyone assumes that it will either be Kentucky or Florida and one of the SEC schools will take him in the end. Whatever decision Lucas makes will not only effect the school he goes to, but will lend insight into the Patterson drama. If he picks Florida, then I will bet a hefty amount that Patrick’s thunder will be stolen and Gainesville will be his destination. If he picks Kentucky, then I think the main three are still in play for Pat. If I am a Duke or Ky fan, I am pulling for the Cats to get Jai….a trip to Florida suggests to me that Jai knows where Pat is headed, and wants to be there as well.
(2) Another weekend winner was Arkansas power forward Michael Sanchez, who had a great performance in Pittsburgh, scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds at an AAU event there. Sanchez’s importance to Billy Clyde could be seen by his decision to skip the more known Houston AAU event for the beginning of the weekend to spend his time in Pittsburgh courting the big man that he sees as an important part of his Kentucky future. Billy Clyde is heading to the Razorback state this week and wants to help push Sanchez to the Blue and White soon. Sanchez’s father told me that he wants to make a decision by the end of the week or early next week….he also plans to be on the Sports Mob towards the latter half of the week.
(3) With a paparazzi-like following, Alex Legion had what must be considered a very successful visit this weekend. He spent time on campus, went to Keeneland and if you believe the reports, enjoyed Sal’s Steakhouse a great deal. Alex still plans on taking other visits, although he has narrowed his list according to the Cats Pause. I have spoken with no one who does not believe that Kentucky is in the driver’s seat on this and there is some speculation (which I cannot confirm) that he may have even given Kentucky assurances that he is coming. But he is still saying he is going to visit other places….which tells me that it isnt done. We hope to have Legion on the show on Tuesday.
(4) Coach “Sip”, Glenn Cyprien, the new assistant for UK is already making waves, becoming UK’s major presence at the Kingwood Classic in Houston. We found out this weekend that Sip’s wife is apparently good friends with Jai Lucas’s mother (which for UK is nice) and that he continues to cultivate the Willie Warren/GJ Vilarino/Shawn Williams Houston trio that could be in Kentucky’s future. Cyprien, assistant Jeremy Cox and Billy Clyde make up what one national recruiting analyst told me is “one of the best recruiting staffs that UK could have formulated when Tubby left.” Music to fans’ ears.
(5) Finally, we have spoken a lot on our radio show about the recruitment of Darius Miller. It is looking like that in addition to home state Kentucky, Donovan loving Florida, Chris Lofton home Tennessee and yearly power Duke, Louisville is recruiting Miller hard. I continue to maintain that there is NO CHANCE that the Cards can take Miller in this battle. Now admittedly, that doesnt come from Darius himself, but from a look at recruiting. Here you have two of the three best recruiting schools in America (Duke and Fla), the home of Lofton and the home state school…..and the Cards think they can compete with that? This led me to ask, when has a player from the state of Kentucky, but not from Louisville, picked the Cards over Kentucky when both teams have recruited them. On the show we got one answer…..Butch Beard. However that battle was before UK was fully intergrated and may be a somewhat different circumstance. Anyone know of another?
Finally, give it up for Billy Clyde….after his time in Pittsburgh, he went to Houston today where he watched the Texas group, including Warren. And while in Houston, it wouldnt be a stretch to assume he may have said hello to Jai once again. Big week ahead….we will find out about Lucas, maybe Sanchez, Jai, Michael and Legion on the show and hopefully other big gets. Lots happening on here we hope, so stay tuned…..

damn it all to hell
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Hey, where were u all located at Thunder?
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:43 pm
with lucas, patterson, legion, and sanchez all on tap…who gets left out assuming they all want to come?
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:44 pm
if lucas chooses kentucky do you think that patrick will choose soon or wait, and tale a chance at legion and sanchez taking the final spots.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:45 pm
If word gets out that Legion most likely is a Cat, does that impact JL and PP? Would it make it more likely they come here to play with him on a team that THEY could create?
Just thinking….
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Sounds like Sanchez is a player.Any idea what the competition was like that he was going against.
Of all the players in greatest need by UK is a power forward.
And if UK gets Legion, what happens to Meeks?Does he move to the three,or does Legion move to the three.Things are certaintly getting interesting.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:48 pm
I think we will get 2 of the 4 big guys left. They have to see that they have a great chance at some serious playing time. Jai and Patterson looked very good in the Jordan Classic the other night.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:48 pm
Can Billy D do his own recuiting. Or does he just wait for other coaches too go out and find the great ball players and jump on at the end. First patterson, then lucas, and miller. He makes me sick.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:52 pm
“Lexington’s Legion…” would have a great ring to it. Gonna ask him if it was he who got sick, and if so, was it a particular food which we should all steer clear of now?
Matt, I’m curious if there are any rumblings as to the last coaching hire to be made. Some have speculated that Oak Hill’s coach would be a good pick.
It’ll be fantastic to finally hear where Jai is going. I really hope it is here to Lex, but if not, I wish him well, and will be glad that CBC can move on.
I do wonder, though, if Patterson’s time table will change when Jai makes his decision? If he goes to Florida, it’s basically a done deal that Patrick follows. But if Jai comes to UK…well, then it stays interesting, doesn’t it?
I just hope Coach K doesn’t some how get Patrick. I would honestly rather see him 2-3 times a year as a Gator than in a Dook uniform on tv.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:52 pm
If Coach G takes a LOI from Sanchez BEFORE PP announces, that tells me one of two things: a) he knows PP is not likely to come to UK OR b) he likes Sanchez MORE than PP. That seems the likeliest read on the situation. Nothing is a sure thing, but Legion is a strong UK lean if for no other reason than the fact his mother is not likely to sign a LOI for UConn or UCLA. What are the chances Jai goes to Florida and PP comes to UK for the last scholarship? Nil! So, I think a Sanchez signing pretty much eliminates PP. We get Legion, Sanchez and either Jai or a JUCO or a “mystery” recruit or we hold a scholarship for next year. That’s how I read the tea leaves.
April 22nd, 2007 at 11:56 pm
If it is taking PP this long to decide on a college, think of what it will be like when he makes the decision to go to the NBA
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:00 am
Your blog is the shit, I read it every night! and thanks for calling out Tipton… hes a straight bitch!
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 am
now this is the types of new I come to this site for. Why doesn’t the HL hire you?
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:06 am
are you really gonna get all those guys on the mob? you say a bunch of shit that never happens.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:13 am
How come they didn’t call it “Harvey Yeary Field?”
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:16 am
Matt, good info as always. Makes keeping up with the Wildcats when living away from Kentucky not a problem.
Random NBA playoff comments…Kelenna is doing a heck of a job cheering on the Warriors. Also, did anyone else hear in last night’s Rockets game that Chuck became a dad yesterday…if so congrats and maybe in 2025 we can have a Chuck Hayes, Jr. on the Wildcats.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 am
Matt, great job today. Glad you got to hang out with the infamous “Johnny Bruce”. Is he still
dating that guy named “daniel” that works in a shoe store at St Matthews Mall? Just curious.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:19 am
Coach G appears to be going after Sanchez harder than Patterson. CBC may not think Patterson isn’t headed here, but I think he believes that Sanchez is the better player just by the difference in the amount of attention he appears to be giving him.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:19 am
Matt,
I’m studying for Family Law right now. Any advice?
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:41 am
Thanks as usual, this is the first place I go for UK news.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:42 am
Thanks for the info Matt. One way or another, it sounds like several pieces to the puzzle will be in place before the upcoming week is over. At least we’ll have some answers finally. Hope most go in our favor. Time will tell I guess.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:44 am
Majors sure made a buzz when he attended the Redhound v. Yellow Jacket football game (83 or 84) in Corbin……6 million my ass……….I’m 60/40 on PP. 40% to UK. 60% says I want him to take his stoic attitude elsewhere. I can see him playing two years and producing on the same level as Morris did last year in year two. That also is a comparison of blank, bored, gum-chewing Morris and unemotional, tougher-and-better-than-you Patterson. You got to give some love to get some love. And I don’t see him ever getting that. Go where we can enjoy whipping your ass to the fullest extent and be a statue for fans that have a Tebow statue already.
Jai is different. I see him as a easy-going friend of the people, but also when you cross the line and break bad - it’s ON. Kind of like many people I know from SE KY…..so he will fit in. For I can picture him punching a hole in the locker room wall after a loss. I love the guy wherever he goes end of story.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 am
I think BG just wants to have a backup in case PP goes to fla or Duke. Nothing wrong with that.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 am
15) Um, if you ever listen to the show or the mp3s from it he puts on this site, you’ll see he interviews everyone he claims to.
And the stuff he says that doesn’t happen is always listed as his opinion, never as a guarantee.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:49 am
No, me and Johnny are no longer an “item”. I couldn’t deal with his shoulder hair.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:51 am
No, the other one. Lee Majors? He’s a pussy. I did Farrah and Lindsay Wagner. Now I got to go run in slow motion and fight Bigfoot.
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:07 am
Have a good night folks. Catch you later in the morning to find out the latest recruiting news.
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:09 am
People who type “1st” on the very first post need to ge a life…whoever finds that funny has a sense of humor like a rock….Lucas, Legion, and Sanchez would be a nice finish to the recruiting frenzy….Patterson doesnt know what it means to wear that Kentucky across his chest and u can tell…itd be nice to have him, but i want someone that understand that UK basketball is above everything….Go Cats!!!!!
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:12 am
a GRAIL?????
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:13 am
Matt,
I know you want your beloved Jackets to beat Corbin, but just remember they have never and will never beat my Belfry Pirates. I’ve been there the last two years and the Pirates have laid a beat down on the Jackets. Now, if Coach Haywood would only learn to call some plays when we play Russell….Dang if he seems to get a mental block every time. Oh, well. At least we won it all twice. And can we please call Sanchez “Dirty” just once? He’s gotta have that nickname if he comes here.
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:15 am
It was the Ballad of the Unknown Stuntman, not average.
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:49 am
17) Chuck Hayes had a baby girl, who was apparently close to 20 inches long. I’m thinking she won’t be named CH Jr.!! lol
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:57 am
Thanks for the update Matt.Lately this is the ONLY place to go to find ANY news on the recruiting. Fantastic job.
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:14 am
Matt~
Saw this on Rivals.com– under the Kingwood Classic:
J’Mison Morgan said Kansas (offer), Kentucky (offer), Baylor (offer), UNLV (offer) and Georgetown (offer) are among his favorites at this time.
Heard anything about this guy?
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:17 am
32) I actually found this…which indicates a boy. Anyway, congrats nonetheless to Chuck.
Chuck Hayes missed Saturday’s shootaround for the birth of his first child, a son, Dorian Titus Hayes. He returned in time for the game and made his first playoff start and had four points and nine rebounds.
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:18 am
Looks like Morgan is a 4 star Center from Dallas
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:19 am
35) Seriously? I swear I heard them say it was a girl during the game last night! My bad…
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:22 am
Copied from the Houston Rocket’s web site. Seems like Chuck’s son wanted out early(month early) to set a pick and roll to the basket!
Notes: Hayes becomes a proud father before game
HOUSTON — Chuck Hayes couldn’t put the experience into his words.
No, he wasn’t struggling to describe the first playoff victory of his career.
Hayes was actually still overwhelmed with become a father hours before the Rockets’ series-opening win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday.
The Rockets forward was excused from the team’s pregame shootaround so that he could be present for the birth of his son, Dorian Titus Hayes.
“It’s a wonderful experience,” Hayes said. “I can’t wait to see my baby boy after the game.”
Hayes was at Memorial Hermann with his girlfriend Nicole Anderson when she gave birth to the baby boy. He weighed six pounds, seven ounces.
Hayes said there was some concern heading into the birth because Dorian arrived a month earlier than expected.
“He’s doing good,” Hayes said.
Hayes returned from his trip to the hospital in time to start in Game 1 of the Rockets’ first round series. He had four points and nine rebounds.
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:41 am
I love to tell people that my high school team, class A, beat the Six Million Dollar Man when he was a senior. The score was 26 to 25 and we had a great quarterback who started in the eighth grade and the other halfback blocked three extra points for the difference. I would have had a birthday loast week but I gave them up, although they are good for your health, the more you have the longer you live.
I would like for someone to point out that the video of the McAfee? kid from Texas
that has been on Cats Pause twice and is on U-tube? now shows a completely illegal
and very dangerous maneuver, hurdling is illegal and a 15 yard penalty in all states
that use the standard high school rules. Some of his jumps were classic hurdling but
some didn’t qualify for a penalty. I finally figured out a possible explanation for
him getting away with it in Texas, I assume they still use NCAA rules for their high
school games and maybe it is legal in college, I can’t believe 5A officials in Texas
would be that incompetent. In 33 years of high school officiating (And thousands as
a spectator) I only saw it happen three times, all by the same back in the ssame game.
Spectacular player though and I loved his determination.
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:42 am
I played on the same Middlesboro football team with Lee Majors - back in the day. I cannot recall ever beating Corbin the four years I was there. We did win the SEKC conference my junior year, but I can’t remember beating Corbin. Heck, there were only about 80 in my graduating class, so it’s easy to understand why we could never make much noise at the state level.
April 23rd, 2007 at 5:04 am
Thanks for the good info, Matt. I would be very happy with a class of Legion, Lucas, and Sanchez.
April 23rd, 2007 at 6:54 am
Per Wilcat Thunder blog : New UK women’s coach to be announced today.
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:30 am
The women need a great coach … here’s hoping they get one.
I still think JL will sign with UK, and it seems Sanchez and Legion will end up in Blue & White. PP ends up at UF. Overall, that would be a great last minute haul by one of the best recruiters in the USA - BG!
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:35 am
From Scout.com
Alex Legion has now narrowed his list to three schools. The 6-foot-5 standout at Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill called Connecticut and Kansas on Sunday to tell them he was no longer interested in their programs.
Legion, who tripped to Kentucky this past weekend, is now just looking at Kentucky, Michigan and UCLA. Sunday evening Legion said he’s working on setting up a final visit to UCLA, which could take place next week
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:36 am
Thanks for the update Matt!
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:43 am
Legion will be the link to a much greater class than we had dared to hope for this year, and would attract others to come and play as part of the class…….
April 23rd, 2007 at 7:50 am
I just found Dick Gabriels sportscast from Sat night. He says that Legions mother said (to at lest one UK fan) that Legion would be a Cat next year. Legion said he woud still take his other visits.
The broadcast is at wkyt.com You have to select the small screen at the bottom that has Sat 10 PM
Anyone else see this?

The last recruit in the state outside of Louisville to commit to the Cardinals that our Wildacts were interested in was Jeff Hall from Fairview. He played on the Cardinals 86′ championship team.

Would you like to touch my monkey?

Thanks as always Matt.

Would that be Johnny Bruce of Hop-town fame?
Chip - get back to work!
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:27 am
I recall that Jason Osbourne picked UL after being recruited heavily by Pitino. His judgement though was later proven to be suspect.
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:36 am
Lee Major’s real name is Harvey Yearey.
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:55 am
Kind of old news but for those that didn’t get to see it…. Jai looked like the leader he is and Patrick displayed some tough D and had a few monster put backs at the Jordan event in NY last Saturday. Love Jai’s attitude and Patrick is all buisness. These guys would be a great fit.
During the John Lucas interview, he made a comment that due to Jai’s height, he would need play for a school with an up-tempo style. Read that how you want but with the late visit to UF, it didn’t sound good to me.
His father obviously knows more about it than I but I think his leadership skills really show up in the half court. He looks as good to me in the half court as he does in transition.
April 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 am
Spot Yeary use to sit on my front porch and court my older sister over near the Devil’s Garden swimming pool where I grew up.
I also really liked Lucas and Patterson’s game Saturday. Both are worth the wait!

#28 Do not be so hard on Jon, he is obviously a little kid. He does this on every post. But you are right he does need to get a life.
April 23rd, 2007 at 10:22 am
UK women aren’t making too big of a splash with that hire.

#20, uklawstudent: Family Law advice:
know the difference between void and voidable marriages and specifically know the types of persons that can seek to have a marriage invalidated and the time limitations in KY statutes;
know how to apply the child support table to various income structures and how amounts are affected by changes in one parent’s family status, # of kids, or loss of income;
know the differences between divorce jurisdiction versus custody/property settlement jurisdiction;
know a little bit about the uniform child custody statutes and how to find the “home state jurisdiction” for custody determinations;
know the standard for child custody (best interests of child) and the standard for modification.
That should get you some points on the exam. Good luck.
April 23rd, 2007 at 10:31 am

I’m getting ready to start studying Family Law and am seeking and internship with KY AOC. Any advice?
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:09 am
What do you call 500 lawyers tied up at the bottom of the ocean? a good start.
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:12 am
74.
Given our history and the dominant profession of our lawmakers, you’d think that attorneys occupy a position of honor comparable to that of Priests and ministers.
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:13 am
73-you won’t learn any law working for AOC!
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:14 am
Matt - how about a poll?
How many readers watched the 6 Million Dollar Man?
Thanks
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:17 am
We would be given up our 6 M$ man ages…..hehehe

Sal’s is not a steakhouse. Good grief.
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:40 am
Good info as always Matt BUT the Texas trio is from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, not Houston.
Regarding whether BCG likes Sanchez or Patterson more, I think he likes them both and will take both if he can. Otherwise, he’ll take the first one to sign. It may seem that he is spending more time on Sanchez right now but he just got done visiting Patterson and could not go to see Patterson and Lucas play because of NCAA rules.
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:42 am
Roger the games were in Houston
April 23rd, 2007 at 11:45 am
Better watch that smashmouth talk about The Redhounds!!!
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:11 pm
#75 Well … you did ask for this.
Too many of us have had enough personal experience with lawyers for us to have any respect for the profession in general. You have chosen a profession in which the barrel is overwhelmed with rotten apples (not in a legal sense, but an ethical sense). You simply cannot work in a field in which you profit from other people’s misery and expect to be respected. If you can learn that there is a big difference between what it is LEGAL for you to do in your service and what it is MORALLY RIGHT for you to do, and practice law with that in mind, you could end up with some personal integrity.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
86.
With guys like Johnny Cochran and Michael Nifong occupying the public face of the legal profession, as well as our apparent dislike for politics (but LOVE for litigation), it is no wonder that this country has a negative opinin of lawyers.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Criminal law is a far cry from civil/corporate law, and the average person needs to realize this. Most of your snakes are found in criminal law, especially on the defense side.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Good work, boys.
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Never lost to Corbin in high school(football and baseball). Their baseball coach refused to play us our senior year because he couldn’t stand it.
“we’re loyal to you Midddlesboro…”
April 23rd, 2007 at 1:56 pm
#88, Knowledge: Um, no. As with most every generalization, yours is not an accurate assessment. There are plenty of high priced snakes in the civil/corporate arena and plenty of noble, and moral, advocates of the criminal defendant. And, vice versa, of course.
An attorney is a reflection of his client, and with the most unsavory clients, it is nearly impossible to not have some of the grease wear off - even if just in public perception. Unfortunately, many attorneys don’t have the luxury of cherry-picking their clients….
April 23rd, 2007 at 2:43 pm
All you people who think the law only attracts unethical people must be in occupations where no one is unethical. You must have business degrees. Work for Enron or Haliburton no doubt.

I think Troy Smith(?)is one Kentuckian who picked UL over UK. Seems like this was the late ’80s-early 90s. I think he was from Fort Knox.

93)in reply to myself, IIRC he committed to UK then changed his mind for UL. This may have been in the latter days of Eddie Sutton.

Don’t blame us! We didn’t have much to work with.

I’m sure there are a few good and moral people among our glut of lawyers, I just wouldn’t
know where to start looking. When you spend most of your time learning what is legal it
is hard to remember the moral side. They are a tightly knit clique starting with their
college days and are in control of way too many facets of our society. A huge start to
eliminitating the glut would be to adopt Australia’s “loser pays” laws, a lot of lawsuits
are settled just to get rid of the nuisance. Good luck with getting that by the lawyers
although I believe a vast majority of “us” would be in favor of it. Government by the
people, yeah, right. My respect for lawyers is right around Zero.

Why pick on defense when the prosecution is at least equally shady, is my only question?
It’s an adverserial system neither side cares about truth just victory. If you don’t like this then you want a new legal system.

Stuart Miller chose to walk on at Louisville rather than accept a scholarship from UK. And the best players in Ky generally come from Louisville and many of them go to louisville. O’Bannon, Griffith, Osbourne….
