Bye Bye Sanjaya’s Thursday News and Views

Well you knew it had to happen at some point…..magical journeys must come to an end and tonight was the last stop for those of us on the Sanjaya bandwagon. After allegedly the most votes in the history of a Top 7 show, the musical train wreck known as Sanjaya was given the boot tonight. It was a sad night for all of America as Sanjaya cried like a…..well like a Sanjaya as he watched his video reminiscing about his long stay in America’s consciousness. The final two were Sanjaya and the infinitely more talented Lakisha (my favorite in the competition) and you could cut the tension with a knife. Simon, still reeling from his bad publicity after the eye roll following Crappy Justin Timberlake’s Va Tech comment, seemed genuinely torn as to who should emerge. But alas, Sanjaya took the heave ho and left America wondering when it will ever get to hear anyone sing so badly, so many times on television. Sanjaya, we here at Kentucky Sports Radio salute you…..and wish you well on your travels into Clay Aiken land.

Onto the news….

(1) I had an interesting conversation tonight with Willie Warren, the stud 2008 recruit who told us last week on our show that he was very close to making a decision. I asked Willie if he was still close and he said, “well when I was on the show, I kind of wanted to go ahead and make a commitment soon after it and just end it. I was ready to do it in the next day or two but then my mom said I shouldnt rush anything and asked me to wait until the ned of the summer, so that is what I will do.” When I asked him what that decision would have been, he said, “things changed so quick there and I just got excited about Coach Gillispie going to Kentucky. So my emotions may have gotten ahead of me. But I really like Coach a lot and he was just here in Dallas to see me as well.” Warren said he couldnt wait to visit Kentucky and that right now they are in the top three with Texas and Kansas.

Bottom line…..if mom hadnt stopped him, this could would have committed to UK last week. It is now Billy Clyde’s job to make him want to do it again in a few months.

(2) Alex Legion is coming to Lexington for a visit on Thursday according to multiple sources today. Legion is a stud talent…..a 6’4″ guard who can straight fill it up and while not at a position of need, Legion is the type of player you just cant pass up. At this point, three sources have given lists of schools for Alex…..and only one school has been on all three lists…..Kentucky. One gets the feeling that his mother wants him to stay at Michigan, but with Alex coming to town this week and wanting to make a decision by the first of next week…..folks, the answer to first recruit to become part of the Billy Clyde era may be Alex Legion……a player arguably more talented than Patterson and Lucas. Pull that off Billy Clyde and ask for a raise…..

(3) Word out of the West Coast today is that Kentucky has offered Darrington Hopson, a kid originally committed to Pepperdine, but now opening up his recruitment once again. Hobson is ranked around 100-125 by most services but is a kid with lots of upside….as seen by the fact that he once had an offer in hand from Kansas, but chose Pepperdine instead. THe assistant he liked at Pepperdine has moved to New Mexico, now coached by Steve Alford who was a Hobson finalist while at Iowa, so the Lobos are likely the main rival for his services. Hobson is scheduled to visit UK next week…..but one wonders if a Legion commitment might end the Hopson saga quickly……especially as the waiting game continues for Patterson and Lucas.

UPDATE: Hobson’s coach tells the Courier Journal’s Jody Demling that he would be shocked if Hobson makes the UK visit.

(4) Billy Clyde is making his way to Arkansas next week to meet with big man Michael Sanchez about joining the class of 2007 and becoming a Wildcat. Sanchez went into his Junior year ranked higher than BOTH Patrick Patterson and Jai Lucas, but patella tendonitis forced him to sit out of basketball for six months and took him down to the 70-80 ranking that some still chart him now. Sanchez is an interesting recruit because when healthy, he projected to be one of the top players in America. However people fell off him after the injury, but got back on board when he had a great AAU performance in a spring tournament a few weeks ago. He planned on prepping for a year to get back towards the top level of schools, but now with an offer from UK…..why wait? That is the question for Sanchez and his family. He meets with Billy Clyde next week and will be talking more with us after……one to watch for……will Legion-Sanchez replace Patterson-Lucas?

(5) The Lexington Herald reports today (anyone notice that someone woke them up and said you better cover recruiting a bit?) that Stephon Pettigrew has been asked to wait two weeks for Kentucky before hearing about a scholarship. Pettigrew wants to make a decision before then and thus this COULD mean the end of the Pettigrew chances at UK. I have mixed emotions on this as I like Stephon as a kid and think he will be a real talent for some college at the next level. But I can see the argument that he may not be the type of player that Kentucky needs at this point. Xavier is a great offer for Pettigrew and my guess is that he takes it…..and he ends up doing very well. Lets hope UK either gets him to wait or doesnt regret their decision.

The Woo interviews and the response to them made my day…..folks, if you didnt hear them, make sure you do….they were priceless. Below is a segment from today’s show and a video I saw linked by the Sports Guy that is fascinating as Gilbert Arenas takes on Deshawn Stevenson in a shooting contest…..with Gilbert shooting one-handed. Amazing stuff. More as the day goes….

    Whoops 1st and 2nd?

  3. Barney

    Good stuff Matt

  4. Todd C.

That is the SICKEST shooting exhibition I have ever seen. I mean, are you kidding me? One handed?!?!

  5. Wacat

I don’t think the Willie Warren situation is horrible. All he could have done is make a verbal commitment and we all know those are very fluid (e.g. Legion). Until a LOI is signed, it is nothing more than a preference. Hopefully, Coach G can wow him with a visit. I personally would never commit to a school I had not taken an official visit to anyway. I would want the VIP treatment and free trip.

  6. bone guy

    Bring Legion on!

  7. JKW1974

I think Sanchez/Legion is exactly what Billy G has in mind. That would render Patterson/Lucas inconsequential. Plus, maybe if PP and JL want to be here they now feel the need to speed up the process. Yes Sir, there’s a new sheriff in more held hostage, day 456 at UK recruiting central…first come, first taken…Like it used to be around here…

  8. Anonymous

This happened before the All-Star game cause Gilbert shoot a 3 in the 3 pt. contest one handed. I don’t think he hit it.

It’s about time to forget Patterson and Lucas and sign Hopson, Legion, and Sanchez. All three seem to great players.

  9. Rumor Mill

the question is…if we get Legion, we’re already guard heavy, and we know we’ve got Vilarino in 09, does Warren still want to come to UK?

  10. Cozyd30

Dammit Matt. I was getting ready to watch Idol on DVR. Damn. (Oh crap….I just revealed I watch American Idol)

  11. goonies24

Please Willie…just committ and get it over with…Gillispie has turned this mess into something unbelievable…i mean who would have thought we would have a chance with ne of these guys…just amazing…go Cats…

  12. goonies24

does ne one remember Villanova and all of their guards….enough said…its not a bad thing….

  13. zcats

eleven! I have been waiting to do that.

  14. zcats

    Darn, 14

  15. JKW1974

#8..I agree, per my comments. We also gain a heck of a lot of length out on the court this way, which is always good. Plus, we pick up an insane amount of firepower.

#9….I think Warren will want to come. Like we see at UNC and Kansas, talent draws talent. It has just been so long we have done that here, that many have forgotten how that works….

  16. yeah yeah yeah

Great work as always Matt, however i think its Darrington hoBson not hoPson i could be wrong though

  17. Jon

I know pettigrew is a St.X lean, but with Dante Jacksin in their class, i don’t see him playing much there. Look for Georgia or Ole Miss to make a big push.

  18. PT

Legion of Doom n tha Dirty Sanchez takin Lex-town by storm!!

  19. Ryan

Just letting you know it is Hobson not Hopson. Thanks for the info Matt.

  20. bcgfan

#9 Warren will probably still want to come because Crawford and Bradley are seniors. That will free up some playing time. Also some of the guards we have are very likely to play a small forward position. Like Jasper and Meeks.

  21. PT

Sanchez, Legion, Warren, Miller, Vilarino, and many more to come … Billy’s Boys are gonna turn this place around in a jiffy

  22. SoCal Will

Billy G seems to break every recruiting paradigm every day. Maybe this is the way you play the game when you bring in “one and done” talent! I like it, but I am too dull to understand what it all means? Billy G is a machine…!

  23. JKW1974

Is anyone else reading or hearing about the coach at Oak Hill coming to UK as an asst coach as sort of a “package” with Legion?

    He is a Kentucky guy…..

  24. Cats&Cubs

Matt–you might want to proof the last couple of sentences in (1). I don’t think you meant that Billy Clyde’s job is over when it comes to Warren.

  25. bcgfan

#23 Where did you hear that? Didn’t PP go to Oak Hill and have a great relationship with that coach?

  26. Wacat

The only bad think about bringing the Oak Hill coach to UK is that the next Oak Hill coach could be pro-Duke or UNC. The current coach has a soft spot for Kentucky – though he sends players all over the landscape.

  27. JKW1974

It was being floated over on Cat’s Pause, #25…just wondered if anyone else hears that.

  28. bcgfan

That could be a great thing just depends on how you look at it. But one thing is for sure Billy Clyde is a busy man

  29. kyjohn

After tonights episode of “Idol”,you have to conclude that the show has as much credibility as WWE.If they had 37 million voyes,30 mil had to be for Sanjaya.
Anyway, back to more important things,UK basketball,Sanchez and Legion sound good to me.UK needs another outstanding shooting guard to compliment Meeks.I hope the days of waiting for recruits to make up their minds about UK are over.
    Can’t wait for October.

  30. cool

So what is going on here..Is Clyde saying, I have offered 5 of you guys. I only have 3 schollies so whichever 3 wants them the most gets them? I really like this strategy because he is forcing Lucas and Pattersons hand and letting them know that they are not bigger than the UK program. After reading about Sanchez I would be content on getting him and saying bye-bye to Patterson. Add Legion and Lucas and thats a great class.

  31. Jon

    25) PP did not go to Oak Hill. He went to Huntington High

  32. PT

i honestly believe Billy has contacted every recruit in America…

  33. JKW1974

I tend to think JL will come to play with most any of the guys we are trying to bring in. PP is the guy with the decision to make, I think.

Billy G has done everything he can to show him what he could do here. Fact is, most of our other options are just as useful. Plus, if Hobson comes, he has a 7’0″ highly thought of team mate to be recruited….

  34. SoCal Will

Here’s a factoid: One out of every eight American high school students goes to a California High School. Should the remaining assistant coach come from the left coast or does it matter when Billy G is already everywhere in person or via text message?

  35. PT

i hope there’s something to the whole Steve Smith deal… that would be grand

  36. cool

This may not mean jackshit but is just a theory I came up with. On the Jordan blog someone asked Patterson about his college choice and he said he just didnt know, but that he might have a better idea by Friday..HMMMM??? Is this a sign that he sees other offeres Clyde has made and knows if hes going to choose UK he needs to act quick??

  37. PT

I wonder what the most cities he has visited in one day is?

  38. Anonymous

I have said all along that the mass hysteria over PP and Jai is ridiculous. If they come great, they are nice players. If not, UK will endure.

Billy Clyde gets it. He know he needs players who dream of wearing the blue & white, playing at Rupp and living in the Lodge. This was my main gripe with Tubby, he was in a desperate position of his own making and everybody knew it (especially those recruiting against him).

Kentucky is basketball heaven. Billy Clyde, in two weeks, created a sellers market (even at this late date for the 2007 class) and at the same time restored the luster. Kentucky is once again being discussed on a national platform. The buzz is back. WE ARE KENTUCKY.

  39. bcgbringthetraditionback!

The bad thing is if we dont get pp or jl ther going to florida and i think the home interview must have not went that well with pp because since then he has offerd schollys to like 3 ppl.

  40. Daniel

Hey, what’s the deal with listening to Dan Patrick’s show in Louisville. Anyone know?

  41. DJ

#37 i could not have said it better. it is truly amazing how quickly this man has changed the perception surrounding our program. this appears to be a really impressive hire by barnhart.

  42. Daniel

At this point, I dont care if we get PP. JL should likely come.

  43. Bryan

LHL is one of the worst papers in America. Anyone on this board could write better than every single writer they have on staff.

  44. ukjedi

so, JL, Legion, and Sanchez? is that satisfactory?

  45. PT

    hell yea!

  46. Han

Don’t be so quick to count Darrington Hobson among the possibles, folks. Looks like that visit to UK may not happen.

Also, could we be in for a Gillispie vs. Self? Will the Apprentice defeat the Master for control of the Legion?

See Aaron’s blog for links to articles:

  47. UKfan215

What is amazing to me about this whole thing is the fact that there are only a handful of talented players who aren’t signed in this class. Yet, it seems that Billy G is basically in on ALL OF THEM! Imagine what the guy can do here if given a year or two to go after these kids, rather than being forced to work a miracle in two weeks. The guy is unreal!

  48. Chris in Louisville

Looks like Tubby is being told he can’t hire Jimmy Williams afterall…

  49. wyldkatzky

#46 Sorry, but that article about Hobson doesn’t make me think he’s gone. Coaches can be wierd.

  50. pekingcat

So, if we miss on Lucas, does that mean porter backs up jasper until 09?

  51. WildcatfaninOhio

Are straight men watching “Idol” now? When did this happen?

  52. Wrath

Rumor is that Legion will commit here during his visit and we end up with a JUCO kid in the post being brought in.

  53. wyldkatzky

    51) Maybe it’s just the fact I am up at 7AM from the day before, but I too am shocked to find that any straight men watch “idol”. I am typically at the gym shooting basketball or picking up really heavy objects. Besides, from noon-10pm I could just watch TBS, and I do.

  54. Anonymous

Why do you keep insisting that Legion would not be a good fit for UK because it has too many
guards? From my vantage, UK only has one pure shooter in Jodie Meeks. Who else on the team has
proven to be a consistent scorer? I agree that UK has a lot of guards, but what are you to do
    when these guys can’t score?

  55. JKW1974

53…I say the more scoring threats on the floor, the better. I am tired of watching this team play and wondering who is going to score for us. We need at least two threats on the perimeter at all times….

  56. PSmitty

Good stuff here. It is getting exciting. I can’t believe all of the names that are being thrown into the mix. One thing is for sure we will be adding some additional talent to the roster for ’07.

Anyone heard news on Walls (Scott County)? I know that Marshall (Go Herd) had offered and a few others. Is Billy G going to ask him to walk on? Where does he stand?

  57. Common Sense

Sanchez may be just what we need. McDonald’s All-American talent, but robbed of that prize by injury, so maybe we get the talent without the attitude.

  58. WOO is AWESOME

That shooting contest happened about four months ago.

  59. 1a

Dave Ragone just stated that he broke the Alex Legion and UK story. What a joke.

Please, give us national shows until the Sports Mob!

  60. Mr Schwump

    50, what a depressing thought.

  61. Dave

Sanjaya doesn’t have the talent to enter into Clay Aiken land. Unless you’re making a boorish reference to something other than his talent. This is a young high school kid who has done nothing to deserve such allegations. For that matter neither has Clay Aiken.

  62. jaba

Sanjaya is moving into Clay Aiken land…life after American Idol.

What allegations are you referring to Dave?

  63. Knowledge

So are we saying that if Lucas and Patterson say no, we’ll take Pettigrew? That’s what it sounds like to me. I think Gillispie has told some folks they have a deadline. This is getting silly, after all. Enough of the waiting games, kids.

  64. ukcatfan88

I don’t care if we have 17 guards….If they can score, we need them. How about a 3 or 4 guard offense? Rotate one big guy in and out? Shoot, we can do anything. And if the guys on the floor play hard and win 20 or so, the talent for 08 will comes at us in droves. I think CBCG will play whatever and whomever he has to to win. And we need that attitude….Off the topic, I work in Charleston, WV and there is a beauty shop here called Nappy By Nature. I’m looking for Sharpton and Jackson to stroll in any time now……

  65. Drake

I agree with several of you that having an abundance of talent is not a problem at all! Legion would be an awesome player for UK. I compare this situation to UNC and their power forwards! You sure didn’t see anyone complaining about that situation this year did you?

  66. blue blinders

Its a sad day. Sanjaya rocks. Lets sign Legion, Sanchez and Pettigrew. Get Walls to walk on and tell PP and JL to walk. Just feel like we are being held hostage by these to.

  67. PSmitty

How are things in Charleston, WV these days? I am from Huntington and currently live in Lex. Do you have a secondary team (i.e., MU or WVU)? I am a big Herd fan as well as a BIG CAT fan. I keep prodding for some info on the Walls situation. I would like to see him end up at MU. Any insights on MU recruiting?

  68. T Svoboda

65, don’t be stupid. If we tell them to walk, they head straight to Florida and will be haunting us for 4 yrs. These are 4 yr college players, and we need them on our side or not in the SEC at all.

  69. blue blinders

Are you not tired of hearing thier names. Nobody knows what they are going to do. But I don’t believe coach will miss on Sanchez and Legion just to wait on PP and JL. We will kick thier butts at Fl. There is a new day dawning on the blue grass.

  70. T Svoboda

68, I like the spirit, but I am still weary of a Calathes, PP, JL, Speights, Hodge line-up. That would be a tough team to hang with, but I agree with what you’re saying. Anyone have any idea on whether or not UK could hire this character turned down from Tubby’s staff. I get the impression he is an ace recruiter, and the only reason they won’t hire him is because he was associated with their previous probationary period. Any thoughts Matt?

  71. john meyer

hey matt, that one kids name is Darrington HOBSON not hopson, in case anyone is trying to look him up

  72. Booger Nose

    Pick me! Pick Me!

  73. The SEC Maniac

That shooting exhibition was unreal. Good stuff Matt!! Keep up the good work with KSR!!

  74. Jimmy Crack Corn

    And I don’t care!
