We take a break from this neverending coaching search this evening to talk about a great event here in the Ville, the McDonalds All American Game. Like Sanjaya from American Idol, the McDonalds game is always highly anticipated, often a little odd and usually full of excitement. It is the last real chance to see the best players in America before they get to college and their various media relations directors put them off limits from now until eternity. It is a kind of circus atmosphere, with future millionaires on the court, playing against the best of the best from throughout the country, all the while sleazy AAU coaches and street agents lurk in the background, looking for the right time to pounce….in short it is a great event, and Kentucky Sports Radio was there. Our ten observations…..
(1) The highlight of the game for the UK folks was of course the appearances by Patterson and Lucas. Patrick Patterson had a solid game, taking very seriously his battle with Michael Beasley and getting a number of rebounds and putbacks. You saw the strengths and limitations of Patterson’s game tonight as he hit the boards, played team basketball and made some good passes. You also saw that he was a step slow on defense against Beasley and he had a hard time matching up with his athleticism. Nevertheless, it was a successful game for Patterson and he received the loudest cheers (along with Lucas) from the pro-UK crowd.
I spent some time chatting with Patrick and his mother during the evening and spoke about his recruitment. He said that Coach David Hobbes had been in contact with him and told him he still should go to Kentucky. He said he would narrow his schools in a couple of days to three. His mother told me that Kentucky would likely be in those three but that really the question was who the next coach would be. She said Patrick could end up waiting until the end of the signing period until he was “assured what the status of everything would be” if necessary, but they hope to get settled very soon.
(2) Jai Lucas was as always, entertaining. He won over a lot of skeptical UK fans with his great point guard play and was the go-to player for the West when a calm point guard presence was needed. Jai is the most liked great player I have seen and the players on his team rally around him. He has their respect and all listen as he spends the game coaching on and off the floor. Lucas also had a great running floater over Patterson which then caused him to look at Patrick and say, “try and stop that.” Jai told me after the game that he guaranteed Patrick he would score on him and he did.
Lucas told me after the game that Tubby’s departure “changed everything and means he almost has to re-evaluate the entire process.” He will wait until Kentucky makes a coach before he makes a decision but admitted that he “had a couple of favorites” of the names he has been hearing. He said that he loves the state of Kentucky, the fan base and the crowd. But he said that the right coaching fit is important and that has to happen for him to commit. Lucas said he hasnt heard from Mitch Barnhart (and neither has Patterson) but that he was ok right now “just living life.”
Bottom line…..UK gets Donovan, in my view they get both. Dont get Donovan, no Patterson and maybe no Lucas.
(3) Jai’s dad John Lucas was once again epic. I am more entertained by John Lucas than should be allowed. He spends the entire game, in constant motion, yelling at anyone and everyone in the game. Even when Jai is not in, he is shouting at the other players, telling them where they should go and what they should do. He coaches from the fifth row with more intensity than anyone I have ever seen…..and he is one of the nicest people you will meet. HE said there was “no truth” to the rumor that he might have coached at UK under Tubby but that he will be “following all you computer people to see who Kentucky hires.” We computer people will be following you as well John.
(4) Len Elmore is really not attractive…..I mean really.
(5) So how about OJ Mayo? Kid shoots approximately 500 times, makes about 3 and nearly gets booed off the court in an all star game…..an unprecedented achievement. The fans were truly getting rowdy and frustrated at his selfish play. After the game he was MOBBED by fans in a way I have never seen…..but lucky for him, he had about four guys who were dressed as mobsters handling his every move. Classic OJ moment. While OJ is sitting signing for kids (which to his credit, he did for some time), a girl comes up, probably 18 years old, for an autograph. One of the mobsters sees her, and her dress (which was mildly risque) and says, “honey you know OJ worries about that stuff after the game.” The girl looks perplexed, takes her program and walks away. I laughed heartily.
(6) Nicest kids in the class by far…..Jai Lucas, Kevin Love and Nick Calathes. All humble and exactly what you would want in a player for your team. Love is special and will be a star.
(7) Speaking of stars, the halftime entertainment of Timbaland did not receive the star treatment he thought he would. After coming out to mild applause, Timbaland looked at the crowd and said, “Wheres the love?” The crowd looked back and said nothing, in part because they had no idea who this man was that was shouting at them. Timbaland began to “sing” his songs and literally NO ONE paid him any mind…..the McDonalds people got nervous and sent the only people who knew him in the building (the Womens All Star teams) onto the court……Timbaland then got into the girls team huddle and just rapped to them, ignoring the crowd……who then proceeded to act as if he wasnt there. What was left was a surreal scene where the players were dancing, Timba was rapping and the crowd was less moved than if Rob Bromley were giving a dissertation on economic theory. Timba finished his “act” walked off the court and said “thanks to my girls on the team and to you guys…..forget you.” It was great…..so I went up to get an interview and Timba’s people said “Timbaland dont do interviews” (my new catchphrase) so I asked Timba for a picture…..and he pointed a finger in the air and said, “take that Louisville.” That picture now becomes one of my ten favorites and will be on here soon (if I can help it).
(8) One star power moment…..got my picture with John Wooden….one of the cooler things ever. Truly a classy guy and spry at 95.
(9) If you saw the Johnny Flynn dunk, it was even more impressive under the goal he almost broke. Syracuse watch out….
(10) One player stood out for his badness…..Cole Aldrich who is going to Kansas. He looked like a guy who, when he got the ball, wanted it out of his hands before he embarrassed himself. Speaking of embarrassing….Gani Lawal got blocked by the rim on a dunk AND shot an air ball free throw. Quite the double threat……
(11) The East team was coached by the South Laurel coach. I wonder if they listened…..I mean heck, this guy once coached the GREAT Ty Proffit for goodness sake…..
(12) Unlike at the dunk contest, Nolan Smith got cheers. The other Duke guys got boos…..you gotta love Kentucky.
(13) Much scuttlebutt on press row about the Donovan to UK story reported on Monday night. Blames seems to be evenly split over the Cats Pause and the two tv stations….but the folks who didnt report it, really do take glee in the ones that did and their misfortune.
(14) Michael Beasley….in ten years we will find out that the MVP was correct and that he is the best player in this class.
(15) Finally, seeing this game up close was a real treat. These guys are so good that it is almost silly what they can do on the court. I have sat on the front row for an NBA game and it is the only comparison I can make to these guys in this environment. Plus, unlike an NBA game, both teams were REALLY TRYING to win. Lucas and Patterson (you will be happy to know) were two players who were into the game the most and the West team was imploring each other on the sidelines to do “whatever it takes to win the game.” It was fitting however that OJ missed the last shot…..the Mayo circus will be great to follow for the next few years and if it is crazy as the things I saw tonight (including a couple I cant write)…..well sign me up!
More to come today, including some new coaching scuttlebutt about another name on the radar screen. Check back in as the day progresses……

I was gonna ask…did you meet Coach Wooden but I don’t have to any more.
I’m glad you had a great time.
Oh, and Tom Friend of ESPN claims there is some sort of non-public part to Billy’s contract which is online.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:27 am
Mike D’Antoni better be this new coach…
March 29th, 2007 at 12:28 am
Billy is on his way.
Just have to run through motions.
Patrick Patterson, Jai Lucas, and Nick Calathes will be great additions.
On a side note: Dont know if this is a sign of transfer or sick of answering questions: Derrick Jasper took his MyPage down.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:30 am
He’s probably sick of answering questions.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:30 am
Hey Matt, in #7, which finger, I wonder, did Timbaland point with?
Sounds like it was a blast. I myself didn’t watch the game between Jericho and a trip to Walmart. Reminds me, I need to go watch my recording of Lost so as to see Lando.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:33 am
I’ll tell ya this for sure. When I released Lazy Tuesday and started getting all those facebook requests in addition to it being the hit of the message boards, i immediately took down my photo on facebook and increased the privacy settings. The same goes for myspace, although belated, I finally figured out how to do that in December or January.
They are entitled to their privacy for sure. That’s why I have not added a single UK basketball player as a friend on facebook unless I personally know them myself.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:38 am
I asked Pat Riley if we had a great team and he just looked at me like an idiot.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:40 am
Im glad someone else thinks Len Elmore is ugly. I never can place what he reminds me of though…
March 29th, 2007 at 12:42 am
If you two are just writing each other messages not on topic, do it privately
March 29th, 2007 at 12:43 am
7, I just had an awkward moment and almost burst out laughing when it took me a few seconds to recognize what you were referring to. That’s pretty bad on my part since I wrote the darn song…as bad as that song was, I shouldn’t be admitting that…
March 29th, 2007 at 12:45 am
Is Jokaim Noah doing american Idol? How does he find the time?
March 29th, 2007 at 12:51 am
Don’t know about you, Matt, but that PA announcer tonight got me HYPED!
March 29th, 2007 at 12:55 am
I find it hilarious the rapper dude got no attention. Those guys think
their poo don’t stink. I’m sure he’ll just blame it on ‘those hicks in Kentucky’
and somewhere the race card will be played I’m sure.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:56 am
Let’s bring in a local boy for assistant coach at Kentucky, Jeff Kidder.
Kidder is a native of Brandenburg, Kentucky. He earned his BA degree in Secondary Education from the University of Kentucky where he was a student assistant under current Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton. Kidder was an assistant coach at West Texas State in Canyon, Texas for one year before getting his first head coaching job at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas in 1991. In two years at Howard, his teams were 48-13. He left the state of Texas for an assistant’s position at the University of Nevada, Reno and, after four years there, was hired at Dixie in April 1997.
When you add up his two-year record at Howard and his eight seasons at Dixie and his first year at Indian Hills, Kidder has a record of 291-76 as a head coach. That’s a .793 winning percentage.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:06 am
All I have to say Matt is that I was severely disappointed tonight. As I mentioned to you at the game, I bought tickets to the game for tonight because I was under the impression that Mark “Coury Flurry” was going to be there. Come to find out, my info was wrong. He was going to McDonalds and nt the McDonalds Game. I was ready to hang out with Coury for the night but instead of heading to Freedom Hall I should have just went to McDonalds in Lexington.
The “Coury Flurry” Flavor was all this night needed. He could have went out on the court at halftime and put on a dancing display to excit the crowd. Then people would have cared about the rapper guy that was out there. I thought Shagari Alleybne was back in town doing the halftime rap. I could see it now, The Shagari Safari and the Coury Flurry crossing paths during a “dance off” in Freedom Hall during the McDonalds game. Matt Jones, John Wooden, and one of the Zooper Stars could have been the judges. Next time they have the game in Louisville I think they need to call me and let me plan the events. The cheerleaders should be throwing out “Coury Flurry” ice cream bars into the crowd instead of t-shirts.
Oh well. At least I was able to walk into Freedom Hall and look at all of the NCAA Tournament Appearance Banners. In Lexington, we use the Tournamnet Appearance banners to wash off the Memorial Coliseum Floor. The U of L Tournament APPEARANCE Banners in Freedom Hall…. What a Complete Joke!!!!!!! What next, a retired jersey for Beau Zach Smith… Just plain RIDICULOUS!!!
March 29th, 2007 at 1:19 am
I can’t believe you got flipped off by Timbaland. THAT is exactly the type of moment for which you get into this business for.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:19 am
I took my two sons to the McDonald’s AA game and we had an absolute blast. The boys loved it and we were all entertained. The boys even got a few autographs in the midst of all the excitement. A great time was had by all. I just kept thinking how cool it was that we were sitting there in our home state watching such talented young men!
March 29th, 2007 at 1:19 am
Late news, the buzz in Florida is that Donovan will sign a “lifetime contract” with Florida, as early as tomorrow. I view this with skepticism, never the less, that’s the word coming out of Florida.
The Timbaland thing sounds hilarious. I’ll bet he wanted to crawl under that huge logo at center court and hide.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:21 am
The Timbaland thing was embarrassing, I felt bad for the guy! No one paid him any attention at all, what a mistake the Mickey D people made w/that decision!
March 29th, 2007 at 1:27 am
So what if I can’t distribute the ball, shoot 30% from the floor and 23% from 3? I’m going to average 40 points a game on 50 shots for USC and get drafted #1 overall by the Sixers.
I’ll break NBA records only previously reached by Shaun Kemp and Wilt Chamberlain.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:37 am
The coach who we havn’t been hearing about is probably JT3. He makes less than 500K at Georgetown, and like Donovan, was non commital when asked if he was gonna stay at G-town during his PTI interview
March 29th, 2007 at 1:42 am
JT3 to UK is very interesting. As long as Tom Friend didn’t report it…
Good night all.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:19 am
JT3 to UK will NEVER happen and is nothing more than a pipe dream! He is in the Final Four, he is at the school that his dad made famous, he has 2 McDonald AA’s coming in, and some nice recruits already lined up for next year, and he LOVES Georgetown. Not a formula for leaving if you ask me. What is he gonna say about a move? He wants a raise like everyone else and him being courted by another school will likely have G-Town officials giving him a MAJOR and deserved raise.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:55 am
I’m wondering if theres a coach out there that no one’s really talking about… I mean, no one was really talking about Sampson before he went to IU. Obviously Self, R. Williams, Coach K, Gillispie, Calapari, and a few others are at this point (and for the first few) not going to happen. But from there, almost every coach and America would think that UK is probably a step up from their current job… yet we only really talk about these handful of coaches (maybe because they’ve been rumored to be involved) but I was just wondering what our guys ideas are for some coaches that no one is talking about.
I want BD, but if we don’t get him, there’s still a lot of good coaches out there in America. Matta’s got back to back top 10 classes and he’s in the final four right now… I mean, if HES a back up plan, then things are looking better then some (LEX) think they are.
March 29th, 2007 at 3:07 am
No way JT3 comes to UK… JT Sr. makes Spike Lee look like George Wallace.
March 29th, 2007 at 7:01 am
“Timbaland don’t do interviews”??? Somewhere, Billie Booth is mortified.
March 29th, 2007 at 7:31 am
Timbaland- is that character or saying from the Johnny Weissmuller’s Tarzan movies?
March 29th, 2007 at 8:19 am
lol @ timbo gettin the freezout. would be more relavant if he was wearin the sanjaya mop wig. lolo
March 29th, 2007 at 8:43 am
new rumor Sanjaya’s hairstylist where American Idol is shot is the cousin of a
hairstylist in gainsville who dose BD’s munster haircut who haas confirme that BD is
leaving for Lex sometime after the gators finish their season!
March 29th, 2007 at 8:48 am
I can’t tell you how many times I heard “You are crazy if you don’t want OJ at UK”. Well….call me crazy.
March 29th, 2007 at 8:54 am
Hey- last night ESPN classic showed the UK-Duke game. Does anyone know where I could find video of the jersey retirement ceremony they did at Rupp?
March 29th, 2007 at 8:55 am
Of course, since Duke is not playing, ESPN has to get them in somewhere.
March 29th, 2007 at 8:58 am
The “south laurel” coach is Steve Wright. Won the state title in 2005 and has been in the state tourney I think 3 out of the last 4 years. Best coach I ever played under including in college. If they didn’t listen to him, they should.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:20 am
I heard FL upped the ante- life time contract, new practice fac, & new gym. If Billy D doesn’t come, we will bankrupt them Cold War style on top of what they will have to pay Urbane Meyer. I guess they will have to pay people to stand in the new gym like they do at the Oscars to make it look full.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:22 am
great to see oj mayo choke on the final shot to lose the game. what a devisive player he will be at usc next season. i am glad he is gone to the west coast so i dont have to watch or hear about him that much. very selfish player and not worth the hype.
jai looked like a true lead point guard. one that is needed badly at uk.
patterson didnt look that great. a little slow and not nearly as athletic as most of the other forwards. still had some good moments though.
calathes looked like another good player. very unathletic as i would feel he may not be able to dunk at 6′6″. decent stroke and a welcomed outside shooter to come in when billy d accepts the job next tuesday.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:30 am
new rumor Sanjaya’s hairstylist where American Idol is shot is the cousin of a

March 29th, 2007 at 9:33 am
Our coaching search is sadly going the same way that NC State’s coaching search went. The parity between basketball programs goes all the way up to coaching jobs. None of the big name coaches are going to leave the jobs they have now to come to UK. I love Kentucky, but its the truth. We couldn’t get Calipari from Memphis, Gillespie from A & M, Izzo from Michigan, we won’t get D’antoni from the Suns, we have to look for a smaller unknown commodity. We are too good for it, but its going to happen. So think about all the great mid major coaches out there, and pick your favorite, because we will probably be naming on of those our new head coach in like a month.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:35 am
UK Jai and Wildcat Pat….. I like the way that sounds. As everyone know’s, Jai’s handle and leadership and Patrick’s hard work in the post is exactly what we’ve been missing.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:54 am
I hope the lifetime contract thing is complete BS. There’s no way that that would happen at all.
Besides, they WILL never pay the basketball coach more than the football coach.
Next year, it’s back to the early round exits for Florida.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:57 am
NC State took a lot of heat, but in the end got a coach that the NC State fanbase rallied behind and got the most out of his players.

March 29th, 2007 at 10:05 am
Why would Billy D lead us on like this if he is not coming. If he is not coming, why not tell us. Its looking like he is using us. If that happens Fla. will jump Tenn. as the most hated team in the SEC.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:09 am
He had another chance today and danced around the question. If he wasn’t interested, wouldn’t he have already said no?!?
March 29th, 2007 at 10:11 am
In my opinion, Billy Donovan is a great recruiter, helped somewhat by the attraction of Florida, but just an average coach. I would rather have Pelphry or somebody else with Kentucky connection who has loyalty to the state and its flagship university.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:12 am
Ironically, I found myself cheering for Nick Calathes (a florida signee) hoping to be cheering for a Kentucky recruit (if Donovan comes). Hopefully it’s not the last time I cheer for him.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:16 am
I hope this is not a ploy to get more out of Fla. If that happens I hope Myer sticks it to them. Football is king in Fla. Billy could come out of this looking bad. But paid. If we get stuck holding the bag I hope we look at Pelphrey. Give him the recources and five years of total support.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:22 am
Donovan being on the Bench and coaching at UK, does not count as him having a KY connection???
March 29th, 2007 at 10:23 am
UK has hired a search firm. This could be bad news. Donovan’s not coming to UK in my opinion, although all of my friends say it is a done deal.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:23 am
No one has any idea who has been approached for the UK job or where UK is in the process. To say anything else is a joke unless you actually happen to be Mitch Barnhardt. For some reason I don’t think he hangs at Kentucky Sports Radio.
Oh yeah…Was Sam Gilbert sitting just behind John Wooden? If so was Sam waving big bills at the players to get them to UCLA?
March 29th, 2007 at 10:24 am
matt i agree with everything..Lucas and Patterson could come in and make an early impact at UK and i cant wait to see OJ get gaurded by some good defenders instead of guys like you and i that played high school ball while [phe was playing. Oh yea i didnt like the comment you made about AAU coaches…not all of us are sleazy and trying to get a chance through our players, some of us are college kids who are getting there start and experience through AAU…just wanted to throw that out there to ya Matt!
March 29th, 2007 at 10:34 am
So I wonder if we can’t land the big fish, would we look at Todd Lickliter of Butler or Mark Turgeon of Wichita State? They’re had mid-major success. Not saying they’d be my choices, but I think I’d rather give them a chance than Tom Crean or Mark Few!
March 29th, 2007 at 10:38 am
i was at the game last night, mayo is probably the most selfish player i have ever seen in person. However, I did have to leave at halftime, missing Timbo’s concert which is too bad seeing his minimal reception really making him mad lol. Calathes is a solid player and had some very nice dishes for dunks by his extremely athletic teammates. Hopefully the time spent this week together by Patterson, Lucas, and Calathes renews interest in Kentucky and going there as a group.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:40 am
Matt,I don’t understand the cheapshot at Ty Proffitt, pretty low if you ask me.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:54 am
cheapshot on Ty Proffitt? Did you see him play at the State Tournament? The kid was lacking and completely out of shape.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:03 am
#31 I watched the game on ESPN Classic, too (and it’s still painful to watch after 15 years!) Did you watch the “tribute”/commentary that followed? As I watched it (including a few words from Billy D. ), I couldn’t help but think, that’s why we might really get him back. How can you be a part of this program, that game, that road from “shame” to glory, and not want to come back? Maybe I’m dreaming, but I really hope it’s Billy D.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:14 am
I hope It’s Billy. With him we compete next year, win the sec go deep in tournament. Without we are scraping the barrel. May not make either tournament. I will support them either way just like I did Tubby. Lets not be that faction of the base the national media is making fun of.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:23 am
Matt, I told you not to sleep on Johnny Flynn. When we saw him last summer, I thought he was one of the sickest athletes at the point guard position since Iverson. He has phenomenal hops and power for a little guy.
Eric Gordon was pretty awesome, I thought. I thought he was clearly better than Rose, Mayo, or any of the other two guards in the game.
Lawal and Hickson were great and the type of bouncy athletes UK needs. Best bigs other than Beasley in the game.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:29 am
My support for the Big Blue doesn’t depend on any one individual, Billy D. included. That being said, I have to tell you that the search for a new coach, and the ossibility of Billy D, has made me excited about UK basketball again. I haven’t felt that way in a while. It’s not as if I won’t support the Cats if the new coach isn’t a former Gator.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:40 am
I know we don’t know what is going to happen, but check this out:
http://ncaabasketball.aolsportsblog.com
A text message? Really?
March 29th, 2007 at 11:54 am
It looks like Billy is going to stay in Florida according to the text messages to recruits. I blame the Kentucky media for getting the fans excited. I guess we will suffer through more Tubby ball with some average coach. Are you ready for the backlash Mitch! You better be prepared because the for sale signs will soon be on your lawn.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:57 am
55 - Yeah, I saw that too, hoping they would have footage from the jersey retirement, which they did, but it lasted something like 8.7 seconds. I was watching the game with friends and listening to Cawood but I really don’t remember the coach K acknowledgement of the UK fans and team- must have been drowned out by all of the breaking beer bottles and wailing from all over the apartment complex.
We were all at Rupp for the senior tribute and your heart just stopped when C.M. Newton says ‘look up at the ceiling as we retire all of your jerseys’… it was like, ‘he did NOT…’ - awesome… must find video….
March 29th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
True Blue you should be calld Crybaby Blue…you are the type of fan that gives all other Kentucky fans a bad name and the ones the national media has been dogging all season long. You are so negative, must be an exciting way to live life….If Billy wasnt interested he would come out and say he wasnt so it wouldnt distract his team but he hasnt so that means he is listening to what Kentucky has to say and has to be considering it, but if he doesnt take the job i am conffident that the University of Kentucky will hire the best coach for the program, they always have. If you ask me, If Billy D is not the next coach I say John Pelphery (who brought in a lot of Billy’s current talent) should get the job, he played for Pitino and Donnovan and coach with Donnovan, I think he would be a great fit at UK! But Crybaby Blue stop being so freaking negative towards the program it does not help the situation AT ALL!
March 29th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
My wife is a friend of the Donavan family and a conversation and she confirmed that Billy and especially his family are very happy in Gainseville. The comment she received was that Billy’s son is not wanting to move and a new Florida contract is imminent. I was definately sad to hear this as a UK fan. Billy and his family are class people and it sure would have been nice to have them here again.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
i dont care if your wife is the pope, she has no idea what is going inside the head of Coach Donnovan and i would take a chance at saying the Donnovans wife doesnt completly know…Tubby’s wife Donna and Tubby himslf loved Lexington and were really involved in the community but that didnt stop him from leaving, its a bigger and better opportunity he will consider it, and if he doesnt then he is dumb and should not be the next coach at Kentucky
March 29th, 2007 at 12:35 pm
61 - If you find the video, let me know. Funny, last night was the first time that I had ever heard about Coach K addressing the fans through Cawood. A classy thing to do, but a little disingenuous to say that he “so sad” for the UK fans. I don’t know. Admittedly, I’m still bitter!! Anyway, like you, I probably didn’t hear it over the tears in my beer. I remember having Cawood on in the apartment, but never heard that.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Mark it down Billy says thanks but no thanks. We should get Pelphrey and just take our lumps. We deserve what’s coming!!

Clay your another one of those negative fans…go be Louisville fan, they like negative people
March 29th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Matt - Yesterday, you mentioned the scuttlebutt at the practices was about the possiblity (or hopefully the foregone conclusion) of Donovan coming our way. Any more talk of that last night??
Thanks
March 29th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Does anyone else find it odd that the Miami Heat rumors and Employment Agency hiring came up the last couple of days after the Monday premature announcement? I saw this comment on another site. Would Pat Riley actually bid against UK for Donovan’s services? Maybe this stuff is being floated out there to cover up. Also, I fear that the longer this has dragged on that the less our chances are of landing BD.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Also, please STOP with the John Pelphrey stuff. He’s not ready, we would be much better off to hire someone who has competed with a Big Time school for sveral years. Barnes, Few, Crean, Wright, Gillispie, etc are all better options. I love Pelphrey just like all Kentuckians but North Carolinians loved Matt Doherty also and look how that ended up. He wasn’t ready either and the pressure swallowed him.

I’ll hide and watch.

Sayin,….ditto, precisely.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Expect Billy D. to say “thanks, but no thanks” and gets a huge contract out of UF. This frenzy that has occurred over the past week when settled results in the Florida fan-base fawning over Billy D. even more (he has played this perfectly). The UK-UF rivalry intensifies even more.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
62 I really think Pelphrey has been gone too long to have had much to do with the CURRENT talent at UF. Heard lots of stuff about the possibility of playing VCU in the tournament this year (Coach Grant). They did play Pelph last year and Donovan talked about it, the players didn’t notice.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
he has been gone two years thats it so he did help bring in this talent…they are juinors and one senior and he helped bring them in….I would rather take a shot with Pelphery who knows what stress this program can be and is, than take a shot with Crean who cant recruit (besides D-Wade: who was underrated coming out of high school, Wright, nd dont even get me started on the Mark Few from Gonzaga, he plays high school teams in his conference he would die at Kentucky. And you must forget that Rupp was a high school coach before he came to Kentucky, Tubby coached at some smaller schools, and Joe B. Hall was an assistant under Rupp, so just because he is at SAU doesnt mean he couldnt do it here!
March 29th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Don’t know why the snide remark about Ty Proffitt. Sure, he is not UK caliber but he is a good kid and got a D1. Also, don’t know why the remark about South Laurel Coach Steve Wright was made. They should have listened to him. One of best high school coaches around. Bar none.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
I would love to see Calathes at UK. He is a heck of a player.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Pelphrey has been away from the Florida program for more then two years…his first season at USA was 2002-2003.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Is anyone else starting to lose their patience?
March 29th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
So John Fienstein was just on Jim Rome about 10 minutes ago talking about Billy D and the Kentucky situation. JF stated that the UK job was the absolute worst job in america aside from the money and that Kentucky fans expect a final four every other year and ran off a national championship coach and he would be very surprised if Billy came hear.
Jim (surprisingly) defended us asking Jon if that was what UK fans really want and suggested that instead we would like more than 1 appearance every 9 years. JF stated again that UK fans had to have one every other year.
I gotta say he really pissed me off because he abslolutely knows jack squat about UK basketball and needs to stop running his mouth. Jim continued to defend us after the segment was over stating his diagreement with JF.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Any idea of who is on the list of both Jai or PPat that would make either (preferably both) come??
March 29th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
This is legit info verified with a website called flight aware. I dont have the link but if you go to justintapp.blogspot.com you can see his post. This dude is a friend of mine and he is a really smart math/economy dude. A private plane took off from Gainsville landed in Lex and went back to Fl yesterday. there is no telling who was on it. It could be totally unrelated to anything but i found it interesting.
March 29th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
#80, Feinstein is still pissed that big, bad UK beat his beloved Dookies in the ‘78 title game. In fact, I believe he is the one who started all this ‘UK fans have unrealistic expectations’ crap that these media idiots spew to this day.
March 29th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
I knew somebody would dig up Feinstein, look for Curry Kirkpatrick next. 83 is right, he never has gotten over ‘78 plus he thought we should have had the death penality from the Emery thing(was very vocal about it at the time) and was absolutey sick and near tears when RP took over and eventually won a NC. He wants us buried and won’t pass up one of his typical cheap shots. BTW, he’s a long time Bob Knight apologist too.
March 29th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
Waters, let’s just take the one sentence: “There’s no telling who was on it” and stop there. You sound like the guy who was tracking a rental car from Gainesville coming up I-75 by GPS, but his was a spoof (and hilarious by the way….). That info means nothing.
March 29th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
I didnt say it meant anything. As a matter of fact I said it could be totally unrelated to anything just that I found it interesting. IM DESPERATE MAN. I need to hear some good news and I wont beleive Billy is coming to UK until he signs on the dotted line.
March 29th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
Nothing against either of you Matt but I would have been more impressed
if you had dug up Sam Gilbert and had a picture taken with him.
