  1. bluegrasscentre Says:

do they do an all freshman team? Anyone suprised that we didn’t get any players on any of the teams?

  2. DCWildcat Says:

Not including Morris–who was, at one point, a legitimate contender for national player of the year–speaks volumes of how his effort has dropped off in SEC play. Morris would be 1st team if he put in the effort to do so.

  3. Anonymous Says:

Sad not to see a cat on either team. I think Morris was worthy of at least 2nd team honors. I thought more than 5 guys were selected to each team?

  4. Mr. Mujumdar Says:

I’m kind of surprised. I thought Randolph Morris would make one of the teams. Maybe this motivates the guys to play hard on Thursday.

  5. Matt Jones Says:

Noah, who some had picked for national player of the year in the preseason, makes second team. Interesting

  6. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

Noah is a matchup nightmare, but he never puts up that great of numbers… the fact that Morris didn’t make the second team is ridculous… just under 16 & 8 for the season… I know he played a bit worse in the SEC, but come on… he got double and tripled teamed the entire time he was in SEC play…

  7. gus Says:

Clarence Sanders must be a typo….should say Randolph Morris.

  8. OH MY!!! Says:

I really do not think Davis deserved to be first team, even though he is basically all that team has, its not like their productivity level dropped off significantly when he went down. He had a good year, but not first team worthy. Second year maybe. I think brewer, hendrix or noah should be there instead.

  9. Han Says:

Well, all I’ve heard from analysts lately is that Horford has passed Noah this year.

Though Davis is still probably an easy 1st team pick, he doesn’t look quite so dominant as he has in the past, too. Hell, his team is playing better when he’s not in the game, too.

If they do an all-freshman team, it’ll be interesting to see if Jasper or Meeks makes it. Meeks is a lot flashier, but maybe hasn’t seen enough minutes to make a real impact in the minds of voters.

  10. Burly Says:

Glad other people outside the Commonwealth see the fraud that Morris is. He is a horrible and I mean horrible defensive player, combined with spotty effort, and no fire in his gut, makes him unattractive to all but the bluest of blue fans.

Yet sadly he is UK’s #1 option. This helps explain our 20-10 record and a stunning 4th seed in the East and the right to play the 1st game of the SEC tourney on a Thursday.

  11. skentucky Says:

Intern- do you have the number of votes each player got and any honorable mention votes?

  12. wldctky Says:

Morris does NOT put out a consistent effort. If he played with fire and determination every game he would be first team easily. But he does NOT give his all every game. Some games he doesn’t give anything. “MY HEAD WASN’T IN THE GAME” And as someone above said maybe this motivates him and the rest of the guys Thursday and hopefully from now on.

  13. Matt S Says:

Jasper wouldn’t make 1st or 2nd team. Meeks would be on 1st team in my opinion. Randolph kept himself off of the 1st or 2nd team. Randolph held Randolph back. Maybe he’ll be back to prove something. What NBA team would sign a guy who was not even 1st or 2nd team in his conference.

  14. Matt S Says:

Does anyone else find it ironic that we missed on Lofton and got Barbour over Byars? The top 2 players in the SEC.

  15. Dan Says:

    Way to go CATS!!!!!

  16. Outlaw Josey Wales Says:

    The Hawks…

  17. Matt S Says:

    ok, maybe the Hawks.

  18. B Frey Says:

#14 good post and illustrates a previous point on talent evaluation.

A first or second team SEC player is NEVER held to 2 rebounds in a game. His avg. is SEC play is 13.9 pts and 6.6 rebs. Hardly 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team when you factor in his lack of defense.

Let’s hope Bradley calling him out lights a fire. Or maybe Sheray could change his legacy from “one of the worst starters in UK history” to “enforcer.” Maybe he can take a page from the Habs.

  19. The Heretic Says:

3 players who could have been at UK. Two of whom are playing positions where UK is hurting badly. One of whom has a skill that UK is sorely missing.

    Welcome to the Tubbydome!!!!

  20. Mattcat Says:

My oh my, I just don’t know what to say. I can’t really argue with any of those selections, it’s just strange to see NO UK players make either of those teams. I just hope this motivates the talent starved players we have going into the conference tourney.

  21. Louisville Blue Says:

You can’t have it both ways folks…our ‘04 class was #1. You take Crawford, Bradley, Rondo over Lofton (in state kid). Lofton was missed by everyone! You take Barbour (#1 jc player, nba lottery prospect, in state kid) over Byars. The arguments against our recruiting should be focused on such players as Adam Williams, Sims, Stockton, Carrier, etc.

  22. DCWildcat Says:

Given what I said before, I think Morris still deserves second team.

He is not a “horrible” defensive player. He’s actually a bit above average.

  23. WoodstockCat Says:

Intern, is this the coaches list or media?

  24. The Heretic Says:

If the problems were minimal, I’d agree with you. But the Smith recruiting problems are universal and perpetual. He has screwed the pooch so many times it isn’t fun to think about. In my opinion, you take Brewer over Bradley. Three guards in the class. One forward would have helped much more than a 3rd guard. He takes Perry Stevenson but won’t take Brewer. Brewer was a McD AA and wanted to come to UK. Not much of a chance there. McD AAs usually work out. Everyonce in a while they do not.

Barbour was not a sure thing. Tubby has not had a lot of luck with JUCOs. Why take a chance on Barbour when you have a quality recruit like Byers who wants to come and play for four years.

Brewer and/or Byers on this team and the Fire Tubby chants are non-existent.

Williams, Sims, Stockton, Carrier, Tackett, etc just add fuel to the fire. Scholarships wasted every year with Smith. The guy is fast becoming a joke.

Definitely not worth the 3.5 million that he will soak UK for by the end of this year. They should take back 200,000 dollars for each road loss and 400,000 bucks for each loss in Rupp.

  25. Intern Says:

This is the AP list. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I know Lofton beat out Byars by 1 vote. Kentucky.com has the numbers.

  26. wildest cat Says:

Thanks TUBBY SMITH for the great recruiting as you can
see hes done a terrific job one of the worst in the S.E.C.
Nowonder TUBBITES are so happy with him.Looks like hes
got another stellar class on the way. What a joke!!!!!!!

  27. mrbluehead Says:

I am soooo done with this….

  28. payne Says:

Chris Lofton was not missed by Tubby. He has improved 100 times over since his high school days. I don’t think he would be the player he is today if he had not played for Tennessee (for numerous reasons).

Also, Tre Kelley was a one man team in most games this year. They don’t mention the point totals, but at best he was third. He should have had way more votes for player of the year. I don’t care how many losses USC had.

    My All-SEC frosh team:
    G Ramar Smith, Tennessee
    G Patrick Beverley, Arkansas
    G/F Dominique Archie, South Carolina
    F Duke Crews, Tennessee
    F Wayne Chism, Tennessee

  29. Louisville Blue Says:

My main point was that if we don’t offer Barbour and the local kid blows up somewhere else then it is a Lofton situation and everyone is saying “why did we take Byars over Barbour.”

Tubby said Brewer was “too skinny” (ie Prince,Jules,Stevenson) and that was a huge mistake. I think Bradley was the 1st to sign in ‘04. I am optimistic about 2008 but we have already used a scholly on the Alaskan Assassin that I wish we had back.

  30. Wes Horn Says:

    Byars got ripped.

  31. losingluv4tubby Says:

#28 Maybe he would not be the player he is today if he had not played for Tennessee. But then again, Rondo, Bradley, and Crawford probably would have been better than they are today if they played elsewhere. IT’s called development and it doesn’t happen under Tubby. Development.

  32. payne Says:

#31 that would be one of the numerous reasons that I mentioned, Tubby would not have developed Lofton

  33. Malcolm_Ecks Says:

Yeah, how do you NOT take Barbour at that point? Sure, hindsight shows that he never panned our, but at the time, he was the “JUCO Michael Jordan”, the most can’t-miss kid from junior college in years. Same with Lofton. The last scholarship that year went to Rondo. How do you not take Rondo over Lofton? A McDonald’s All-American vs a borderline top 100 kid?

Those are no-win situations. If the Cats had taken Lofton and Byars, then fans would be ripping them for not taking Barbour and Rondo. Danged if they do and danged if they don’t.

  34. Aaronedge Says:

Right, #32, that luminary of a coach Buzz Peterson did the trick….

  35. wildest cat Says:

Yea and don’t forget the great class of Orbzut,Thomas,Perry
thats gotta be a all time top class but wait till we
have the results of the class coming they may top that one…..

  36. payne Says:

34, no but bruce pearl did

  37. Dave Says:

(in my best Chris Farley voice)
Remember when…when UK guys used to make the All-SEC team? Th…that was awesome!

  38. skentucky Says:

What interesting is that if numbers drove the voting based on your play in the SEC, Joe C would be close to first
team. Considering he average closed to 17 a game in SEC play, with huge games at Ole Miss, Tenn, and Georgia.

Straight numbers dont mean much to the SEC voters.

  39. skentucky Says:

Forgot to add, numbers should not drive voting and I am glad they do not.

    Dear Smooth and Joe C,

If you want to be big time, which you do, whether you score 10 or 20 a game doesnt
mean anything to voters like me. You both averaged great numbers in SEC play,
but it didnt mean anything to me this year because of your lack of team play.
The success of the team and your ability to produce in clutch situations will bring you the fortunes
you so desire. Best of luck next year and focus on sacrificing for the team. If you win the SEC and play team ball,
you will get all the personal glory you have been trying to get.

    Best of Luck,

    ALL SEC Selection Team

  40. Wick Says:

Well troops, look at it this way. Barring any stupidity, we’re going to have the same team back next year - minus Bobby, Woo, and Sheray; plus AJ Stewart, and maybe even Jai and Patterson. Jared Carter might be worth a damn, Ramon Harris will have some March experience under his belt, and we’ll have two senior McDonald’s All Americans plus Jodi Meeks, Derrick Jasper, and Perry Stevenson, a top 15 class.

This March will be a Big Blue Bloodbath, but that’s okay. UCONN isn’t going to the tournament, Duke won’t be accomplishing anything, and neither will Michigan State, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, and several other big names. Meanwhile, Florida will be cleared out and untested, Vandy can’t possibly be any better than they are now (which is beatable), the West will be soft, and UK is consensus pick for the class of the SEC next year.

You never want to resign yourself to next year, but our issues are not nearly as much about talent as they are effort and maturity. Joe Crawford can shoot. Randolph Morris has the physical abilities required to dominate his position. Will we be deep? No, but we will have as much mature talent as anybody in the country.

    Just a little perspective.

  41. Tired of Tubby Says:

    This is a joke…our McD AA still don’t make 1st or 2nd team All-SEC???

Wait to go Tubby, I can see how well Joe and Randolph have developed. Betcha they wish they chose Michigan and GT.

  42. Anonymous Says:

#28. How could you not include Jodie Meeks on your freshman team. He was SEC freshman of the week at least 3 different times. Noway there are 5 other freshman in the SEC better.

  43. payne Says:

#40 - Tennessee is consensus pick for class of the SEC next, they only lose Bradshaw, Arkansas has no seniors and should also be good, without Patterson and/or Lucas UK is looking at another year of not winning the SEC

#42 - Meeks is not better than Smith or Beverley at guard, not even close (both of them also had 3 SEC frosh of the weeks, both of them start, and they average more points, more rebounds, and more assists, a better argument would be that Ramar Smith should have gotten freshman of the year over Beverley, Meeks isn’t even in the discussion), then you put in the two forwards Chism and Crews, and the last spot I gave to a G/F but if I was making a freshman “team” I would probably put in a C and it would be Hill from Arkansas, so sorry no Meeks

  44. Anonymous Says:

I think the SEC didn’t put meeks because they have got burnt by this before. They know by the time Tubby gets done with him, there is no way he will be a 1st team SEC selection. He will have been TUBBIZED - see Joe Crawford, Randolph Morris, Sheray Thomas, well maybe not Sheray.

  45. payne Says:

what am i saying, hill is no freshman

ignore everything i said, i obviously am smoking something

  46. Louisville Blue Says:

I agree that there should be a lot of optimism about next year IF Patterson and Lucas are on board and Morris is returning. Without Morris and Patterson though things might be pretty difficult. Imagine Crawford and Bradley having to win every game w/ Stevenson and Carter as the only size up front. Patterson/Lucas w/o Morris might be a good thing for the TEAM.

  47. Pitino's PPHolder Says:

    44 You’re ignorant

  48. knottcobred Says:

I am not shocked at all, by the list. We have come a long way.

  49. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

You all really don’t know what you’re talking about if you think morris is a horrible defender… the guys actually an above average defender… JESUS… I seriously, I can’t explain this anymore… well maybe one more time and hope some of you finally stop bitching about morris for one second to actually think things out… ok….

Morris is our best offensive player, one of the best offensive big men in the nation and at times the only way we can score… no put yourself in opposing coaches shoese…. aren’t you going to do whatever you can do to stop Morris? They double down on him a lot and try to make Ramel Bradley and Crawford beat us…since we don’t have a quality pf or sf… and guess what, it’s been working. That’s why his production is down in the SEEC… not because he’s a lazy piece of crap like some ignorantly think…

As far as D goes… well have you ever actually watched him play D, or are you just repeating what you hear other people say about him? He moves laterally very well and is great at staying with other natural centers, HOWEVER!!!! if you’ve watched him play you’ll see that he picks up stupid fouls/gets called for fouls that don’t happen… it’s called an anticipation foul. The refs no he fouls, so they anticipate the foul before it happens and even when it doesn’t theres usually a whistle. Because we CANT SCORE WITHOT HM IN THE FLOOR…. he has to be VERY tenative on defense and sometimes that means only contesting the shot so much so that he doesn’t get called with the foul. Do you watch the games when he’s NOT on the floor… we’re terrible. Yet I swear some of you find it so much easier to blame Morris for everything as opposed to tubby, schemes, or the overall talent level and decision making ability of the rest of the players.

Theres a reason he shut down Hansbrough and Gave Noah fits the first time we played Florida this year… Hansbrough and Noah both thought they could guard him 1 on 1 as opposed to doubling down on him like every other team has done against him all year. keep shooting him down though and see what happens next year if we don’t have him. The Ramel Bradley/Joe Crawford show will really start then…

  50. Jake Ryan Says:

Looks like Tubby’s “there will be no one player who stands out in my system” approach is working to perfection.

    Kudos, Mr. Smith.

  51. JKW1974 Says:

Sadly, this is indicative of the current state of Kentucky basketball.

It demonstrates that (1) we don’t recruit like we used to and (2) we don’t develop them like we used to.

I agree with you 50, it is working to it’s own unfortunate perfection……

  52. bigsky Says:

Not a UK player to be seen. A definitive statement about Tubby’s ability to evaluate, recruit and develop basketball talent.

  53. SherayThomasFootwork Says:

#49 You had me until you said Morris moves laterally very well. Not in a million years.

  54. Anonymous Says:

For a 6′10 and a half guy that goes about 265… he moves pretty damn well. If you watch when he goes out towards the top of the key, he’s very good at getting low and staying with some guys on the dribble… he just does. I’m sorry if you don’t see it, but he moves pretty decent. Even if you have a problem with that, the rest of what I said still holds weight.

  55. Dr. Bob Says:

#40, so UK will be the team to beat next season? Not likely.

  56. benherewaiting Says:

First of all i know i am going to get bashed for saying this but here it is.. How can anyone say that a returning lineup of Morris (yea if he stays) Crawford, Bradley ,Stephenson, Meeks, Carter, Jasper ect are not going to be any good next year? Hey most of the Tubby haters on here should be glad that next year they want be able to BOO Sheray and cringe when Perry are in the game. You won’t be able to bash Tubby for playing them instead of someone else.. Should that not make you happy? (no you cannot be happy, sadness is your life ) You have screamed for that all year correct? Next year you wont see those two on the floor. What happens if Lucas and Patterson signs with Kentucky? I am sure that you will then claim that Tubby will ruin them correct? No one knew how Lofton was going to turn out… Did Duke, Kansas, UCLA , North Carolina recruit him? Did they recruit Rondo? Crawford? Morris? Bradley?. hmmmmmmm. Does every Mcdonalds AA turn out to be an outstanding college player? Pro Player? If so them Coach K and Uncle Roy would have won the NCAA every year. I am as frustrated with Kentucky basketball now as anyone, but to say that WE HAVE NO TALENT and that Tubby just destroys players is a bunch of BS. Yes, the losses are a hard pill to swallow, but why is it That Kentucky can lose at Florida and it is the end of the world but NO TEAM HAS GONE IN THERE AND WON THIS YEAR. Why is it the Kentucky cannot lose to Vandy at Vandy but until last weekend NO ONE HAD GONE IN THERE AND WON. Yes we are Kentucky and we should domintate the SEC and the nation, but if what we have done in the last two years is an abomintation i would hate to see what is going on at UCONN, or Loserville last year ect. Kentucky will get back to the top with or without Tubby, but i cannot believe some of the things that I read on some of these chat boards. When I see people say “I hope Alabama beats them and then they lose the first game of the NCAA” that is not a fan but a person who is a TUBBY HATER. If you would like to see the team that you love fall flat on there face to get a coach fired that is ridiculous. The same people that bash Kentucky now also I am sure dreamed up ways to bash Pitino also when he was here. SUPPORT THE DAMN TEAM.. HOPE THEY DO WELL HERE LATE IN THE SEASON. IF things were to go well in the NCAA this year would that not get KEntucky alot of recognition? Would it not help recruiting? Would it not make the players feel extremly confident coming into next year? FACE THE TRUTH !!! Tubby will be back at Kentucky next year, We all need to get behind the team and support it with all we have got. Sorry about the long post but lets not tear down the program we have. THe sky is not falling like so many of you would hope it would.

    GO CATS

  57. wildcatlover3 Says:

sad when not 1 player from uk has made the all sec team. has our talent dropped that severely or do we have a coaching problem that doesnt allow them to excel. your guess is as good as mine, but this list could explain why we finished 4th in the east. pathetic really.

  58. UK_MVP Says:

Its simple our junior class has not lived up to the hype. Now we must see the cycle through. Kentucky has survived worst things.
All this talk about Tubby being fired and the lack of support from the UK AD will do more damage than anything Tubby has done.

  59. lame duck tubby Says:

your right, talking about tubby getting fired and how bad he is will make us go #3 and #4 in the SEC east and go 42 and 23 in two years… it’ll also make us miss out on good recruits like…

    Gary Johnson
    DeAndre Jordan
    J.J. Hickson
    Marshall Moses
    James Anderson
    Brandan Wright
    Thaddeus Young
    Markief Morris
    Marcus Morris
    Chris Barnes
    Julian Wright
    Tyler Hansbrough

and a kid that went to prep school over us… we better stop talking or else things ill get really bad…

  60. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

I forgot Korvotney Barber, Damion James, and Darrell Arthur…. my mistake.

  61. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

Where the heck did my post go…

  62. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

Well I agree with you none the less Lame Duck Tubby…

  63. Yamzy Says:

    Interesting ideea
