We begin with an oft-forgotten moment from the early 1980s when Dirk Minniefield threw down one of the best dunks in the history of basketball. Seriously watch this thing. You’ve got to put the Derek Anderson dunk against Louisville on here! That may be the only dunk in UK’s history that’s even close to the Minniefield SLAM! I bet the Mississippi State guy still has nightmares! Someone should show this video to Scotty Hopson!

First thing I noticed was the ball pressure on defense. Man I miss that so much. That was Mel Turpin on that man

Dirk’s athletic ability was unreal! He was as quick as a rattlesnake and could jump out of the gym. It was because of Dirk’s senior year in high school and the number of all-star games HE played in that the post-season “rule of two” all-star games was instituted. He played in more than anyone that year — and that year of 1979 was the greatest in high school history. Ralph Sampson, Sam Bowie, James Worthy, Clark Kellogg, I. Thomas, ‘Nique, Derrick Hord, Dirk, etc. The all-star games were tremendous! I was fortunate enough to announce one that included the Yugoslavia national team and see some awesome talent from both sides of the “pond!”

I remember that…it was talked about for several days. I also remember kenny walker picking the ball off the floor and dunking on louisville in ‘86. That comes close.

James Lee was probably the best UK dunker ever. He jumped OVER a 7-foot Russian Olympian in a preseason exhibition game in Nov 77.
His dunk to seal the NCAA championship by the best UK team of the modern era in 1978 was classic Freight Train.
Dirk played in 8 HS All-Star games in 1979. Drugs got the best of him in the NBA. He was listed at 6-3 but probably wasn’t.

Nearly any dunk by Andre Riddick where his feet ended up on the shot clock would be my favorite.

#13 Tom, Dirk was — if I remember correctly — was a hair over 6′2″…although listed at 6′3″ as you state. While in the NBA, Dirk was the Celtics “6th man” which of course was made famous by Madisonville’s own Frank Ramsey.

Here’s an amazing 2001 HS dunk contest where David Lee won (shoulda been White) but there are some incredible dunks coming from several players still just in High School. Wow.

I think one of the incredible things about that dunk is the fact he seems to be one his way UP when he dunks, not on his way down. Anytime, anywhere, anyone…that is an incredible dunk

I was a Dirk Minniefield freak! I saw every Lafayette Generals game in 1979. I remember this dunk like yesterday . After his Celtics days he was offered a scouts job for a few years. I don’t know what he is currently ding as of now.
